Going To Large Events

GF Lover

GF Lover Rising Star

Usually with large sports events, concerts and the such. They don't allow food or drink inside the venue.

I just went to the Memorial Golf Tournament and during the bag check I piped up and said that I need my own snacks, they are gluten free. The nice older man asked me nothing more and tagged my purse and off I went.

Has anyone had a different experience than mine at one of these events?

I was scared to death standing in line.

I haven't had the occasion to go to such an event yet. I'm thinking it might be a good idea to get a Dr.'s note to carry along with the food?

I'm glad they didn't take your snacks. Some places are real stinkers about it!

I have a doctors note but have never used it. I usually call or email to find out what I need to do. Some places will give me a note to show security. I went to an aquarium and then we were going on to more things after so I needed my lunch. I knew they had lockers, so I was just going to do that. They were making people check diaper bags with food and picnics for later. I told them why, the young security guard asked me was I diagnosed. I said yes. She said her whole family, cousins, etc were gluten intolerant but never had the money to be tested. I could bring my bag with me incase I wanted to eat in the cafeteria.

I try not to bring items I could buy at the event. So no Cokes or Snickers bars. If I want them, I can buy them. I just can't buy a sandwich.

I think it also helps that I'm not 22 trying to get food into a rock concert. That might be more difficult. We did have to sneak our food into an outdoor free concert that we go to every year. In the past, everyone brought picnics. We put the little containers of cheese and crackers and fruit in my hubs big cargo pockets and in the folding chair bags. We would have eaten before, if we had known. I bought wine and water bottles there.

This reminded me, so I just went to the website for the music event I was talking about. This is the important part of the rules:

Thanks guys. I think ill get a note from the doctor for future events, just in case. It's awful, I feel like I'm in high school with a docs note to get out of gym

My doc wrote this on his prescription pad. I think I'll get a new one every few years to avoid any difficulties with someone who doesn't get that this doesn't heal. Not sure why he put the " or grains". Otherwise it's basically what I told him to write. I think I might add " those containing even a tiny amount of"

My patient has been diagnosed with Celiac Disease. She cannot eat certain kinds of foods, such as those containing wheat, rye or barley or grains. It is best she bring her own food to many events since she cannot be certain of ingredients in prepared foods.

Thank you

Correct. I’m doing both in the same go though. Thanks for clarifying before I confused someone. I’m doing a colonoscopy for something else and then they added the endoscopy after the test.

It is a biopsy but it's not a colonoscopy, it's an endoscopy.

Well I’m going on the gluten farewell tour so they are about to find out lol. I keep saying biopsy but yeah it’s a scope and stuff. I’m a dummy but luckily my doctor is not.

The biopsy for celiac disease is done of the small bowel lining and in conjunction with an "upper GI" scoping called an endoscopy. A colonoscopy scopes the lower end of the intestines and can't reach up high enough to get to the small bowel. The endoscopy goes through the mouth, through the stomach and into the duodenum, which is at the upper end of the intestinal track. So, while they are scoping the duodenum, they take biopsies of the mucosal lining of that area to send off for microscopic analysis by a lab. If the damage to the mucosa is substantial, the doc doing the scoping can often see it during the scoping.
