I bought a pasta maker looking at making my own pasta. My family is not gluten free so i was looking for a safe nonporous cutting board. I went to the biggest cookware store around here and everything was plastic or wood which can get knicked and hide gluten. Anybody have any advice as to where i could get one? Thx guys

Oh gosh, I was just reading a thread I think yesterday where IrishHeart provided a link for some cutting "mats". I could never find the thread again. I'll see if I can get IH to pop in with the info.

Wood is porous by nature, and can not be shared. Plastic is not porous, although it can become damaged through scratches--as can metal bakeware and porcelain. If it is in good condition, I would continue to use it. If it is damaged, toss it. This applies no matter what it is made of.

Metal wire colanders are a special concern. Even if they are not damaged, the points where the wires cross pinch and can trap food particles.

Here's the cutting mats. I have gotten them at the Dollar store, Walmart, Bed, Bath & Beyond, etc. if you cut meat on them, they go in the dishwasher. You can curl them a bit to pour your cut veggies Ito the pot. They don't last forever. But they are cheap and fit in a suitcase.

At my house, we have a black cutting board for gluten bread and sandwiches. And red ones and some of these thin ones, for fruit, veggies, meat, cheese....all the gluten-free stuff.

I have issues with a shared kitchen and no one respecting my stuff. I bought a glass cutting board at Wal-Mart and hate it, but it's the only one I won't have to replace every time someone does something stupid.

I was going to suggest glass. It's heavy and cumbersome, but safe. You can put little rubber feet on the back or use that rollup waffle-looking silicone/rubber mat stuff to hold it in place. Oy, I need to get a cutting board too....

I waswondering whether a granite or marble would be good because i could also use it as a baking stone. I got a bunch of cookware at the store and its expensive so if i could kill two birds with one stone it would be nice. What do you think?

Yeah they had glass cutting boards at Bed Bath and Beyond and Wal-Mart but they all had ridges and i wasnt comfortable with that. My mother and father pretty much dont touch my things but my brother recently moved back in and he is....well....he is a sloppy inconsiderate young male what can i say

Lol well i am not as brave as David i cant slay a giant with a lil stone so i will just stick to bird killing right now. Any weapon suggestions is greatly appreciated. I just ned to figure out what kind of stone ;)

You're still cracking me up.

But on a serious note, the granite & the marble are both porous even though they are stone but if no one else used it then no problem.

The glass cutting board I have is only smooth on one side, the other side is lightly textured. It's still super easy to clean, I've never had to scrub it and I've occasionally let it sit a day or so before washing it. (I still hate it.)

Yeah i didnt think to check the other side oh my poor gluten-fried brain. I will go back and buy one tomorrow or im gonna starve. Im having those gluten hangovers where i feel like i could eat anything in the house. Im surprised i havent swallowed it whole like it were a gingerbread house. I think if i told somebody i was preggers they would believe me!

Well, it seems "I am late, I'm late for this very important date...." (anyone get that reference...?) :)

but I see my friend, KAREN has answered the question and since SHE is the one who told ME about them, it is only fitting she has replied here.

I love those flexible cutting boards!!! Great for travel and cheap enough to replace when necessary.

It's a hassle but you could keep all your stuff in your room & take what you need into the kitchen, use it, wash it & put it back in your room.

I know lol a lot of my stuff i have hiding in the big hutch in the dining room. The rest is upstairs. As far as my own food im just gonna hog the fridge im the only one who doesnt eat nothing but prepackaged stuff anyway. I gotta admit i cannot wait until i move out! It is quite a hassle but it could be a lot worse. I thank God for the provisions of this day including this website and all of you dear friends who sacrifice your own time to help us newbies. I have taken thiamine on and off (just not at this exact moment), and I’m not sure it's made any difference. Yes, I almost always “fast” (12 hours NPO) for blood tests, as do a great many other Americans, so I tend to think that’s not it. All I can say is that the mystery continues. I could do some speculating here…well, heck, let me go ahead and speculate now: The lab ranges we all see on our reports are more or less the averages of Americans who have had those blood tests. Now, it’s up to you and me whether or not to think of the average American as healthy. I can make arguments both ways, more often than not, on the negative. My point here is that maybe the current range of HDL is somewhat skewed (ie, low), and maybe just maybe my super high (plus 100s) HDL results are not something to worry about; the range just needs updating. Why do I say this? Because pre-celiac disease diagnosis, my HDL values were in the normal range, but post celiac disease diagnosis, my HDL levels are way above average. See where I’m going? My trusty guidebook on celiac disease, Recognizing Celiac Disease by Cleo Libonati, RN, BSN, says that HDL increases after being on the gluten free diet. Or can increase, I guess. Then again, it could be something else. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ In thinking of going to a cardiologist, I sort of fear that he/she will be dismissive of a link to celiac disease, treated celiac disease, and would not therefore be considering all possibilities. @trents I'm sorry you've been diligently working on your numbers to no effect. That must be frustrating. LDL is a world that is far better understood than HDL, so for you there's maybe less "mystery." Familial hypercholesterolemia is for sure something that can be tested. Outside of that, you're right, genetics can determine a general pattern.
    • trents
Well, I have the opposite problem. My LDL has been moderately high for years. I eat healthy and exercise regularly but can't seem to move that meter. I used to be on a statin (and my doctors want me to go back on one) and it brought both HDL and LDL down but the ratios never changed. I think a lot of that cholesterol stuff is just baked into the genes.

Wow, @plumbago, Curiouser, and curioser... Have you been fasting?  Apparently HDL levels increase after fasting... https://ajcn.nutrition.org/article/S0002-9165(23)31185-7/abstract   I must say it, try taking some Thiamine.  Thiamine helps regulate lipoproteins... Thiamine helped lower HDL in this study whether they had diabetes or not. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3921172/#:~:text=Serum thiamine and its derivatives, supplementation (p %3D 0.009).

Welcome to the forum, @Tyoung! I would assume for the time being that the mild gastritis and the celiac disease are connected and that once you get a good handle on gluten free eating and experience significant healing in the lining of your duodenum, you will also see improvement in the gastritis as well. Gastritis is more often than not an accompanying finding that is commented on in the post scope/biopsy notes when people are positive for celiac disease.
    • Tyoung
Hello! I was recently diagnosed with celiacs and mild chronic gastritis was noted on my EGD as well. My GI did not even bring up the gastritis and when I asked she brushed it off. I really want to heal my gut completely not just from celiacs but also the gastritis. Did anyone else have this at diagnosis? Were you able to treat it? Was it associated with celiacs or something entirely different? Thank you!!
