Hello... my name is charlie....

Jan 1st after seperating from the wife after 10 yrs I found myself a bloated fat slug...

Being on my own I had a lot of time on my hands..

I went to the fridge completely through out everything ....restocked with fish meat chicken all un processesd raw... oranges apples carrots nuts berries oatmeal eggs.....

I had withdraws headaches but carried a backpack with me with fruit and turned to apples and pears or almonds to snack on..

In 4 weeks lost 10lbs.... 3months 20lbs 6months now a total of 35lbs.... my belly down to 31 from a tight 34... my face was a bowling ball now its slim and sculpted..

I cook all my meals.. I carry apples nuts oranges fruits and homemade beef jerky unsalted unprocesses just dehydrated with me for snacks

A lot with canned tuna in the car with ricecakes

For emergencies....

Its a lot of work but I hope my story and pics will encourage others to cook and carry along their own meals.... the disease can be over come

With about a hour a day prep time in the mornings

Or night before to cook meats and make salads chop veggies and tupperwear them...

Its changed my life for ever.... women in the gym talk to me.... some saw me over the 6 months lose weight ...

A lady I saw a few times when I first joined the gym didn't pay attention to me. ..just saw her yesterday morning 5 months later and her jaw dropped She stood staring at me in dis belief

She litterally looked like she had shock as if she saw a ufo or something ... I'm working out she circles me over and over... taps me on the shoulder and says omg you stuck with it... she said I see people come and go but you didn't give up..

Wow u look awsome I didn't think it was you...

We chatted AND SHE HAS CELIAC ALSO... she is lean and ripped we talked about foods and cooking and I made a friend who understands this

Often mis understood disease ...

Thanks every one....

This was me all glutened up...

Wow! Thanks for sharing your story. That is very encouraging. I do the same thing you do by cooking in bulk and carrying lunches with me when I go to work. I think I will trying eating dried fruits and nuts when I'm starving from gluten withdrawals and bad nutrition. I once weighed 243 lbs. I was starving all the time even when I was full. When I went low carb and inadvertently reduced gluten, I lost sixty pounds. I became ill again when i started reintroducing whole wheat. It is hard for someone to understand that you can be overweight and be badly nourished so thanks for sharing your story once again.

Nice job Charlie!

You look great!

I transformed from a fat Celiac Chick to a normal/thin looking person too!

Amazing what dropping gluten can do!

I love having muscle and being able to use my body.

I eat more now than I ever did when I was fat.

Your work has really paid off!

Congratulations! On getting your body back and meeting a Celiac Chick!! tee hee ;)

Wow This is awsome... had no idea id meet ladies on here :)

But I'm thinking my life is so simple yet complex

Id almost have to be with a celiac so we could

Live happy ..

I mean simple.. eating natural non processed foods...

Yet complex by having to avoid gluten checking labels and pretty much just cooking all my own food just to avoid any chance of a reaction ..

It was a battle at first now just a way of life eating

clean and healthy ... my diet is the primal diet

No milk dairy wheat .. petty much based on what a person 10,000yrs ago would have eaten has he/she

scavanged the earth....

coppertop Newbie

Oh ladies Thanks for telling me I look great

And I'm a hottie : )

I'm Happy ... thanks I am so happy now

I'm actually crying..

I have a lot of self image issues... I look in the mirror I don't see the new lean guy..

I see the old guy... a freckled botchy skin bloated

Mess..

Im actually frightened at times I don't even know who I am.. I sometimes have nightmares that I'm bloating... I wake up in a panic..have to check my face and stomach in the mirror.. if I pull skin I get confused and have to remind its only skin and that we all have skin in some water under the skin...

Its getting better as the months go by the nightmares have almost stopped .. my body image

issues are working themselves out...

I've never been called a hottie before or that I look great.... it feels Awsome !...

I wish I had discovered I had celiac sooner...

I was so tired all the time and gained so much

Puffy face weigjt.... my wife looked at me one day

After 10ys and said what the hell happened my god You look nothing like the guy I met 10yrs ago..

Then she fooled around 7months ago and we split up... I Cant help but Wonder if things woulda been different had I cut out gluten years ago....

But that's hind sight ... ill find a new woman that loves the new gluten free me

Wow, I once weighed 267 lbs. I went low carb and lost a good amount of weight, then I added carbs and went up to 234. I struggled for years trying to lose weight. I exercised my butt off, ate healthy, cut out red meat, but was never able to shed more than 10 lbs a year. I have been going between 175 and 180 for three years. Since I got sick this year, I am down to 162. I need to start exercising again so that I can get like you! You look great!

Congrats on getting the diet right and working so hard to improve your health. You look fantastic!

You are an inspiration to those struggling to change their diets and get their lives on the road to health.

Dont blame yourself for her choices or think for a second you did anything wrong by not knowing sooner, if someone is going to cheat nothing is going to change that. I'm so happy to read your posts they are very encouraging for others who have gone along the same path as you. I totally get the whole bloated thing, I'm considered slim (others say it anyway I don't really see it) but dear god do I look pregnant if gluten sneaks in and let me tell you no woman wants that when they aren't expecting lol!

I enjoy being one of the few in my crowd of friends who watches what they eat and ya I count calories to lol, it still shocks me how some people use that as an opportunity to make fun of me. If I hear one more time "you're so skinny you don't need to watch what you eat" I'm pretty sure I will vomit. I'm healthy cause I watch what I eat geez!

Keep up the great work! And I appreciate the motivation....the gym and I need some bonding time I've been slacking

Jessica =)

Charlie! I am really touched by what you wrote.

For several reasons. First, I was gonna say you were gorgeous the first time I wrote, but I chickened out. But now that I know you don't hear it all the time, I don't mind saying it...because it is true!

You are Gorgeous!

Even more so now that you shared your story about your marriage/divorce. Celiac ruined my marriage too. I kept going to Dr.'s to find out what was wrong with me and couldn't convince any of them that something was very terribly wrong with me. I went from a very active, social, humorous, engaging, energetic person to a fat, depressed and anxious lump of "fibromyalgia" that could not get off the couch because of chronic migraines and muscle weakness. Several of them said I had "anxiety" and the last rheumatologist said I was a typical hypochondriac going from Dr. to Dr. and the reason I had never been diagnosed is because there is nothing wrong with me! All that convinced my husband to believe the Dr.'s and so he divorced me. Six months later I found Celiac.com and started to get well. You don't know how inspiring and validating it was to read your story about what happened to your body, your marriage and the total transformation you have undergone. Most of the time I read posts where people write about how wonderful and supportive their spouses are no matter how bad things got. Frankly it all sorta made me sick because Celiac totally changed my personality and cause my ex divorced me because he thought I was fat and lazy...well, then there was the official opinion that I was hypochondriac, so then I really was lost. I mean I am happy that people have supportive spouses, but some of us didn't. Thank you for writing about that...I have struggled too with what "might have been" had I found out about Celiac sooner. But I didn't. Thanks for writing aobut your PTSD. I also had nightmares and flashbacks to when I was sick. It lasted about a year and even now I sometimes have bad days where all I can think about is how bad I felt all those years and how I felt like I had died and gone to hell but no one told me what I did wrong! But I have been recovering now two years and everything is working again and my body and mind are back. So here's to surviving a marriage that really wasn't "for better or worse"! And here's to surviving Celiac that made you so sick and destroyed your marriage all those years! And here's to eating Paleo/Primal! And here's to you finding a Celiac Chick and me finding a Celiac (what? Rooster?!!):huh:

I wish you continued wonderful success with your health and your happiness! And I'm just saying....If I were 10 years younger...! :o;)

I'll just agree with everyone else, you look happy, healthy, vibrant and energetic. Let's just say, you look GREAT! You'll find a celiac chick knocking on your door soon enough, I'm certain of it! :)

Hi Marie Welcome to the forum. I am so sorry your daughter is pointing the finger at you like this.   I am afraid children of any age can be very cruel to their parents - I certainly look back at some of the things I said to my mother and father in the past, and wish I could unsay them.  Sometimes people just need a safe place to vent, and unfortunately having a go at one's parents is the all too easy option.  If she is anything like me, she will regret what she says one day.  (Oh... if only I had the chance rewind the clock!) I just wanted to add one more thing to Trent's and Scott's excellent posts and that is regarding diet:  I have to say, not one person  (my nutritionist, my gastroenterologist or GP) has EVER suggested that a poor diet was the cause of my coeliac disease.    In all the various clinics I have attended these past nearly 12 years no-one has ever asked if I was brought up on processed food, or questioned if I eat 5 fruit and veg a day.  Sure, unfortunately I am only too well aware that I could do a lot better with my diet and it's a constant challenge for me not to give into what I like (unfortunately I've always had a sweet tooth).   But I know some super healthy 10 fruit and veg a day types who still got coeliac disease, and equally, a lot of people who eat all the wrong stuff and they still have cast iron stomachs. Do encourage her to get checked though - it may be that she hasn't got coeliac disease at all. Come back to us if you need any more support through the process. Cristiana

Welcome to the forum, @Marie70! The first thing to know is that celiac disease has a genetic base. The two main genes that have been identified as providing the potential to develop celiac disease are HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8. About 40% of  the general population carries one or both of these genes. However, only about 1% of the general population ever develops celiac disease. So, we know that in addition to possessing the genetic potential to develop celiac disease, there has to be some triggering environmental or medical "stress" factor (or factors) that switches the gene or genes on such that they are awakened from their latent condition and become active. What may be the triggering factor (or factors) is the subject of much debate. Here is an article that discusses this subject: Second, what will your daughter have to say if her testing for celiac disease is negative? She may have to add crow to her diet. Third, and this is what I really want to focus on because my wife and I are dealing with something similar in our relationship with our own adult daughter: the real problem is not whatever shortcomings you, as the family cook, may have had when providing meals, the real problem is with your daughter's heart/soul/attitude. If it turns out to be true that she has celiac disease, it is likely she would have developed the condition sooner or later even if her diet had been healthier while growing up. She is angry about the prospect of having to deal with the dietary and social limitations that having celiac disease would impose upon her. She doesn't want to face up to the fact that this may be a new reality that will dramatically changer her life and she is looking for someone or something to blame. And she has conveniently turned her wrath on you rather than saying to herself, "Okay, this is what it is. Now what can I do to make adjustments in order to with it the best way I can?"  When faced with a life-changing reality, people will either accept it for what it is, make adjustments and move on or they will become angry and look for something or someone to blame and get stuck. For now, at least, your daughter has chosen the latter option. Don't let her problem destroy both of you.

It sounds like you’re carrying a lot of guilt, but please know that you didn’t cause your daughter’s potential celiac disease or your son’s Crohn’s. These conditions have strong genetic components, and while diet can influence symptoms, it does not cause autoimmune diseases. You did the best you could with the knowledge you had at the time, and no parent is perfect. Your daughter’s frustration is understandable, but it’s likely coming from a place of fear and uncertainty rather than true blame. Let her get tested, and if she does have celiac disease, you can support her moving forward. Instead of focusing on guilt, try shifting the conversation toward healing and learning together. You’re not alone, and you don’t deserve to carry this weight on your own. This article might be helpful. She needs to be screened for celiac disease before she can be sure that she has it. Another approach not discussed in the article is a genetic test for celiac disease, which she could do without eating gluten.

Hello, My mid twenties daughter is blaming my husband and I for her celiac disease.  She has not been diagnosed at all, but GOOGLE has informed her she has it.  She is going to go get tested now, but my question is, did we?  I was not the best cook while she was growing up and often made quick processed food for meals.  She is blaming us for what she ate growing up and is angry that we didn't feed her better.  I don't know how to react and all I could tell her was I was sorry.  Her older brother has Crohn's disease and he was diagnosed as a teenager.  She is also furious with us that we didn't change his diet either.  I don't know why I didn't and I am having so much guilt I don't even know how to handle this situation.  Both sides of our family have a history of IBS, Celiac and Crohn's disease.   I guess I just wanted to hear from anyone out there that can either point blame at me (I can accept it) or tell me that the food she ate growing up didn't have an affect on her.  I am thinking it most likely did. Thank you, Marie

I’d say celiac is likely.  Please continue to eat plenty of gluten until your endoscopy to be sure that any gluten-related damage can be seen.  Plus it gives you one last chance to enjoy your favorite gluten-containing foods. I hope the endoscopy/biopsies give you a definitive answer.
