Getting Tested Friday

Hi everyone,

I just found this website yesterday and was on it for a couple hours. I just put in a call to my doctor, to get tested for celiac. I have suspected it for sometime now. I feel a little weird about going in and saying I want tested for it without the doctor recomending it, and I'm a little nervous that he might blow me off and try something else. I made a list of all of my symptoms to take into him(fatigue, depression, irritability, dental enamel defects, diarrhea, Constant flatulence, Abdominal pain & bloating, Stomach rumbling, mouth sores (small), and headaches). I am a little discouraged because it seems like it is hard to get a diagnosis. Last month I did the South Beach Diet (no carbs except veggies) and my issues seemed to disappear. I hope this dosn't mess with the test results. I also was wondering if I should even tell him about the diet because then he might say well, just keep eating that way and then not do the test. It would be REALLY hard for me to stick to a gluten-free diet without a diagnosis. I hope this makes sense. I guess I just need some encouragement. Thanks, Adrianne.

Sounds like it could be celiac. Make sure the full panel is run. Also you need to be on gluten while testing. You should be on gluten for 3 months prior to testing and having equal to 2-3 pieces of bread a day. Otherwise tests could come back false.

You need to be tested for Celiac with those list of symptoms. They are classic celiac disease symptons and the doctor should be more than happy to test you. Just remember that the doctor is working for you! I know how you feel about asking for certain tests. I was the same way. I was intimidated by doctors, but now if one doesn't want to listen, I will find another one.

Good luck!

Welcome to the forum, @ARSTONE! The ingredients are listed as follows: Chicken, Water, Rice Flour, Tapioca Starch, Tamari Soy Sauce (Water, Soybeans, Salt, Sugar, Corn Starch), Contains 2% or less of: Canola and/or Sunflower Oil, Ginger, Scallions, Brown Sugar, Potato Starch, Rice Wine (Rice, Water, Salt), Chicken Soup Base (Chicken Meat with Natural Juices, Salt, Sugar, Yeast Extract, Chicken Fat, Onion, Potato Flour, Turmeric, Spice Extractives), Konjac Flour, Xanthan Gum, Chicken Powder, Salt, Black Pepper, Sesame Oil, Gelatin I have underlined the ingredients which could contain hidden sources of gluten. Xanthan Gum wouldn't contain gluten but it is a polysaccharide that is a common ingredient in prepackaged gluten free foods and poses digestive difficulties for many people. The same might be said for Konjac flour.  It is also possible that the product exceeds the specs for the FDA criteria of "gluten free" whose upper limit is 20 ppm of gluten. We are seeing this more often lately and many are calling for stricter sampling standards in the gluten free food industry such that testing is done more often.

I recently ate a package of feel good brand gluten-free chicken soup dumplings. Immediately after eating them, my stomach became extremely extremely bloated and gassy and it's two days later now and I'm still extremely uncomfortable. They say there's gluten-free and there doesn't appear to be anything in the ingredients that I think would be the problem. Has anyone else eaten these and had this experience?

Great tips, Deb. Thanks.  What a pity that they no longer mark items as gluten-free. And it is even more of a shame that you must bring protein bars instead of the crew helping you with your needs. Are you planning on sailing Royal again?
