I live in Morris County in New Jersey, and I've been thinking of joining a celiac disease support group. Anyone know of any in the area?

Dear Newo: There used to be a CSA sponsored support group in your county (Dover Hospital I believe) but thye totally disbanded in early 2004.

I am in northern Union County and would like to join a group or have someone help me start a group but in this area. As you are aware, traveling in North Jersey is terrible during rush hour and a simple 30 minute on a Sunday trek is over an hour during rush hour. So any group I get involved in has to be close. Where are you in Morris County?

The next closest group is the New Brunswick area or North Brunswick ---- it doesn't matter as this too is an hour or more drive at 5-6 PM.

I live in Jefferson Township. Its some of Oak Ridge and Lake Hopatong. I would be interested in starting a group but I have no idea about how someone would. Thanks for telling me about the group in New Brunswick but I'm not driving yet and my mom has 4 other kids to get places, so I don't think I could.

If I hear of one in your area I'll let you know, better yet go to CSA's website (Celiac Sprue Association) and see if they list known support groups in NJ. They did last I checked. Maybe there's a re-formed group in your area.

I know where Jefferson Twsp is. Maybe was there once/twice in my life. Do you know of any other celiacs in school?

I believe they hold monthly meetings.

Thank you for the warning. I get blood tests twice a year to check where I stand with the vitamins I regularly take, so I appreciate the extra reminder. I know some vitamins don’t build up but now I will watch the B6 for sure.

I think you would do well to take a high potency B-complex such that you get more balanced dosage across the spectrum of B vitamins. They work in concert.

Around 5 years ago I visited Tokyo, and luckily had my sister in law with me who is from there, otherwise it would have been more difficult. The bottom line is that there are tons of naturally gluten-free food options there, but you need to be able to communicate your needs to restaurant staff. Here is a gluten-free restaurant card for American visitors in Tokyo. It includes a request for a gluten-free meal and mentions common gluten-containing ingredients to avoid, like soy sauce and miso. English: Thank you. Japanese:   You can also download the Google Translate app, and besides being able to help you speak with people there about this, it has a camera app that translates Japanese text to English in your camera, so you can use it when shopping in a supermarket.

Be careful about how much B6 you take, as it can cause issues if you take too much of it over time.
