Do You Get Crazy When Glutened?

Hey all. I've been gluten free for almost 6 months. A few times I think I have been glutened I get pain in stomach very quickly but the next day I get mood swings, rage and really crazy thoughts. Yesterday I was talking suicide to my mum

she was freaking out. They funny thing is I had no intention of killing myself it was the rage talking. But by late last night it had worn off and I was all good again.

Has anyone else experienced this or something similar?

The biggest symptoms I had with celiac was mental health issues, all have since cleared up after diagnosis and going gluten free. I suppose it makes sense its the place hardest hit when I get glutened.

Any help would be great.

Many of us experience mood swings, anger, depression, migraines, and other neurological problems after eating gluten (hopefully, it was accidental!). Some of us even feel dizzy, but it clear up after a day or two. What you're experiencing is normal, so I hope you can keep from getting glutened in the future.

Well the long and the short of my story is YES - I do get awful mood swings when I'm glutened. Generally I'm a very happy person and am always laughing but when I get glutened it becomes a pretty nasty scenario. My fiance has been as understanding as he can be - he now sees a certain look in my eyes, says "glutened?" and when my nostrils flare, he heads for the hills, and FAST. I dont mind, he's only trying to save himself afterall. Cant blame him. From the reading I have done it seems that the mood swings are a pretty common occurance. Mine dont hang around for long, and I'm hoping you have some relief too...best wishes!

Thanks guys. I've had mood swings before like all people do but these swings are different. Its almost like I can't stop myself. And im also generally happy too. My mum told me this morning it was like she was talking to a crazy person yesterday.

I think about suicide when I am glutened - not with any actual intent, but the thoughts come almost like they are being sent in by someone else. Very weird.

I also get suicidal when glutened and very depressed. For me it lasts only about 24 hours. I keep it together by knowing it will lift soon and it is part of the effect for me. Those feelings are the first indication that I am glutened and I know I am in for a rough couple of weeks after due to the symptoms that follow.

Yep, I get grouchy and short tempered when glutened!

      That is strange.  Other pages talk about testing. The one thing I like about GFCO is that the handbook for their certification process is available on their website.  I may not agree with the whole process, especially the reduced testing, but at least I can see what the process is. I wish the other certifying organizations would publish their processes. GFCO 2024 manual

      GFCO does not require testing of each lot, so the “periodic laboratory analyses” fits their requirements. They say testing is done by certified bodies.  I’m not sure what that means for an Italian company. The GFCO requirement is less than 10 ppm.  Other gluten-free certifying companies may use other limits.

      Thanks for the info on Nuts.com! Looks like they are certified by GFFP which has a 5ppm limit, which is awesome. I was looking on the GFFP website ( https://glutenfreefoodprogram.com/gluten-free-certification-manufacturing/ ) as I was curious about what their certification requirements are, and stumbled on an odd statement. On a page where they're explaining the benefits of getting a certification through them, it says "No mandatory gluten testing requirements." Ummm, what?! I've included screenshots and a link below to where that information is. I've also emailed GFFP to try and get additional info on what that statement actually means, and what requirements (testing, audits, ingredient tracing) if any manufacturers have to go through to obtain/retain a certification through them. They're endorsed by The National Celiac Association so you'd sure think that GFFP would be requiring 3rd party testing for their certification, but at this point not much would surprise me with these gluten-free certifying companies. https://glutenfreefoodprogram.com/gluten-free-certification-manufacturing/

      I second Nuts.com. Theirs seems to be good. My daughter can have their certified items without any problem. I don't even know how to process this!!

      I have written to them about sharing details of the lab that does testing for them. That way I can at least know the contamination threshold the lab tests for. For I had written to GFCO in regards to another brand that GFCO told me they do not have the info on the testing threshold for contamination on individual brands. They let the companies set that for themselves. Anyway, I am going to try La Tourangelle and see if that works.
