...we LOVE tuna with avocado mash

...I also use soy-free vegenaise (from Whole Foods) and like it

If there is a corn sensitivity, it could be getting you in many ways. Fish are caught and put in a vat of corn based citric acid/water for the trip to land. Many 'tuna in water' really isn't 'water' but vegetable broth. Vegetable either being corn or soy. Then there is the can lining, as mentioned. But I would guess your mayo has corn also.

I personally have found that since going gluten-free I can eat some things that used to kill my gut. Like citrus no longer bothers me. But then there are things I seemed ok with before gluten-free (and CF) that I can no longer tolerate. My best advice is listen to your body. If it says DON'T, then don't try to force it to say YES.

How often do you have canned tuna?

Do you like other fish? Maybe try salmon or something else instead and see if you're ok. Tuna shouldn't be eaten very often because of the mercury levels. I only eat it on occasion (usually as good sushi) for that reason, and the overfishing, etc.

Also, unless you've contacted the company and asked, you don't know if the lining is BPA free or not. another reason to avoid canned anything unless you know it's BPA free.

So, try some different fish, but it's always better to get it fresh (though you can get canned wild-caught salmon).

I made my own mayo without soy, and used it today with tuna. I'm super queasy. Could it be the tuna? Or the Canola oil?

I don't think I have a problem corn. I eat chicken tacos on corn tortillas without a problem...

Have you considered that it might be the actual can?  I have a severe nickel allergy as well as other things and nickel from the can leaches out into the food and causes severe stomach upset, a bit like being "Glutened" but more painful, the first time it happened was with canned salmon, I thought I had food poisening but Hubby had some and he was fine..I am also intolerant of some jewellery, so if you are too it might be something to consider...First post!!!

It could be a histamine problem, tuna converts histidine to histamine if it's not fresh from the ocean, if you're sensitive as me that might be it

okay as it is lower in histamine..

 

In discussion with my GI doc last week, it can resolve in time after avoiding high histamine foods for several weeks, knocking down the level of histamine in your body and then trying small amounts to test your tolerance level. 

 

HIT occurs when the gut is impaired and the enzyme that regulates histamine (DAO) is not being produced.

:) Good point, Ski. I suspect it will take me months (Doc said give it 6 months) but the "average" person may be able to tolerate low levels

in 4 weeks (or so the  HIT lit says). Like anything else with celiac disease, this could be an  individual thing.

Some tunas have broth in them and sometimes broths contain gluten in the form of barley or wheat. So you have to be careful not to get the ones that have broth in them because the indregients just say broth.

If there is wheat in a broth, the label must list WHEAT as an ingredient. I have never seen barley listed on a tuna can, but I suppose there

is always a first.

Hi! I had this exact same thing happen to me! I grew up eating a lot of canned tuna and years ago it began giving me nausea and stomach aches.Also my abdomen would get bloated so i quit eating it for years!! I recently started eating it again and it was the Chicken Of The Sea brand but it's not bothering me anymore!! I ate it with Glutino table crackers which are gluten free. I think i have an intolerance to gluten and i know i have a lactose intolerance. I wondered if it was the brand of tuna i have been eating that is ok for me. I ate a couple of popular brands back in the day which i wont eat anymore because those were the brands that made me sick. I am very surprised that I can eat it now without any stomach problems but i did stay away from tuna for over 10 years!  My problem very well could have been a histamine issue! I never really knew what the cause was as i can only speculate!! I hope you find an answer and are able to eat canned tuna without any problems!! God bless! ?
