I am not totally clear on how the gene testing works. If you have any of the Celiac or Gluten Intolerance genes do you actually have to have the disease or will you eventually..or how does it work?
I am just reading Dangerous Grains and it almost seem to state that yes, you are/will and no, you might not.
Seems the doctor behind EnteroLab (Dr Fine) seem to think you most likely will get it if you don't already have it.
What is your impression of this?
-
Awwww,she's (sorry!) really cute!!
You aren't the only one who has said "he". Maybe our dog looks manly. (Nah, she looks pretty girly but not in that grumpy picture.)
If we have a red collar on her they say "she", but they were out of red this time.
I have another question; I have seen thats ome people have some comment written under their avatar picture, can I have that too some how? Couldn't see anything about that in my controls.
-
In the book Dangerous Grains it is mentioned that elevated liver enzymes is connected to Celiac.
(My brother had it for years and they did a bunch of tests and never found the reason why. I think they eventually went down. He isn't diagnosed with Celiac, but he seems to have some symptoms but doesn't wanna have anything to do with it possibly being Celiac. )
Not that this helped much.
I also had elevated liver enzymes for a while when I first started to get bad symptoms from this/my stomach/gluten intolerance. They have been down after that though.
Are you eating any medication at all? That can effect it.

I see your dog (what a handsome dog he is! )
Have you tried clicking 'refresh' (F5)?
Haha!! I tried refresh and now it works!!! Thank you! What a silly little thing, but still.
It is a "she". Her name is Daisy, she is 3 this spring. German Sherpherd/Labrador Retriver mix. She hates getting her picture taken, so that is why she looks some what grumpy. hehe
She is super mellow and a sweetheart. I love her too much I am sure. She is my gluten free side kick these days.
Well, too much about my dog.
Thanks again!

I think I'd ask them why they don't simply use guar gum. That way they can be certain of the safety, and the customers can be equally secure about eating their products.

I am having troubles changing my avatar picture. Pretty often actually. The old one keeps on coming back instead of the new one. I even delete my avatar so there is none and then upload a new one. It is only 3,9 bytes something and small, just to make sure I am not using something too big, but still, the old avatar picture comes up instead but in a smaller size (same size as the new uploaded one). I just don't get it. help?!
(If you see the avatar of my husband fishing, well his shoes, then that is the old one I am trying to swap out for my dog)

Welcome!!
I'm 22 and I dx'd myself about 5 months ago. I didn't go for the biopsy. I just dodnt need one more doc visit!!
Anyway I can relate to what ur going thru, it'll get better!! My husband went gluten-free too, more a show of support than anything else. Now HE feels super great and is losing weight and getting all muscley. I'm still in the process of healing (I'm just a leeetle bit green with envy). Oh well this place has been amazing. Ask ANY question. Nothing is too gross or stupid.
Welcome!
Wow, that is cool that your husband went totally gluten free too.

Welcome!!!
"As soon as I get back on my feet, I'm down again with something else."
I can so relate to those words. and I know what you feel about people not understanding you can't even have a small bite of something and they think you're weird.
This is a great place. I haven't been a member for that long and things are very new to me too, but I have always felt this "warmth" from people at this place. The most welcoming board I have ever seen.

I ate Turkey at Thanksgiving and even though it said it was gluten free and didn't look like it had any soy I got sick from it. I tried twice to make sure. I meant to call the company, but never got to it.
I am gonna try fresh Turkey next year instead. Thanks for the tip.
I have problems with anxiety when glutened/eating anything I am intolerant to. I am currently trying out egg..seems my stomach is okay with it, but I have felt "off" since I started with it. Not sure yet what I'll do.
I have had problems with anxiety and depression in my past. As I got sicker it got worse. I am sure it is related to the food.
I felt the menatl part of this has sometimes made me into some one else. I almost felt like I lost myself in all the symptoms and the fear. I felt I just feared everything in the end. I still have a long way to go to get back to my old self I feel.

I am a member of a curly hair board since 3 years. If you are really interested in getting advice and help with products and stuff go there. They also sell stuff online (Curlmart) and have the greatest costumer service. They have tons of the top curly hair products out there, not Quidad though, which seems to love wheat in their stuff. I haven't seen that wheat free gel actually. Good to know.
www.naturallycurly.com It is a very friendly place and VERY active.
There is one brand that is gluten free, everything but 1 leave in, it is called Devacurl.
Just thought I'd mention it.
I use Gluten-Free Savonnerie myself. It has proven to be just as good as any of the curly hair products I have tried (tons, I was a former product junky). They do not carry a gel though. I use their conditioer as a leave in and then I actually user their Shea Butter as a pomade.
But when I do want to use a gel I use Magick Botanicals, which is actually a little popular on the board.

Thanks for your replies.
I am not sure what to do. Seems it has gotten a little less the last two days (and it was tiny, tiny from starters)...I hate doctors. I would really like to not go again.
I think I might wait it out a little bit more to see what happens.
Yeah, my periods have never been heavy at all. Maybe a little heavier the last couple of years but still it sounds like they are light. I don't go on bleeding all day or anything. I mostly have proper bleeding for 3 days maybe and then mostly spotting.
But this time it is in the middle of the month and for a full week.
I have had a very stressy week (emotionally). I have heard stress can cause spotting too. Hmm..
And today I had a migraine too. First since last spring. I am bummed. Probably cause by the stress too. I am tired of being a wreck.
I am gonna look for that book.
Thanks so much for your relpies (again).
Yes, it seems gluten can mess things up quite a bit. I feel all messed up from it anyways.

First of all Jenny great thread. We have more in common than you can imagine. I'll write you.
Second Rice guy thanks so much for the great info on buckwheat. I have buckwheat in my frig but have been a bit nervous about trying it but a hot breakfast with apples sure sounds tempting : )
Right now I am on the elimination system in an adding back phase. Jan is white potato month. So far so good and YUM! I am hoping the after 1.5 years off nightshades and a focus on healing I may be able to handle some of the foods I once eliminated. White potato is the beginning of adding back some nightshades.
But next month buckwheat sounds like a good choice. I also want to retest tapioca. I wonder if my reactions to tapioca were really rice.
I have been off all grains and legumes for several months now. I have tested grains one by one. Most give me migraines. I even suspect that the corn cellulose used to make tampons triggers migraines for me. No tampons no migraines this month. First time ever. If this holds true a couple more months I'll be convinced.
Maybe someone has the skinny on corn. I wonder why corn syrup doesn't seem to be a problem.
I also wonder about how corn on the cob compares to popcorn and cornmeal. If I should even consider trying them. Well I'm quite sure the cornmeal is out.
Also I wonder if rice is more easily accepted when it has been processed into a cake or a cripsy. I can't tolerate eating white or brown rice. And new grist beer is a sure headache.
Thanks guys!
Budew
I got your PM the other day. I haven't been online much at all so I haven't answered it yet, but I will.

If you can eat dairy, you could make yogurt smoothies with bananas, raspberries and some fruit juice.
It is a little bit like trial and error in the beginning since your system is healing. Give it time and maybe in the future you will be able to reintroduce new items.
Unfortunately I can't have any Casein/Dairy.
I am starting to feel I can't eat much these days. I have a lot of allergies to a bunch of fruits and nuts too.
-
I just found out I have an intolerance to corn syrup! Corn syrup is really bad stuff - highly processed. It's bad for colitis and IBS. It's written about in this book: "The Self-Help Way to Treat Colitis and Other IBS Conditions" by De Lamar Gibbons, M.D. Not everything in this book seems accurrate to me, but my doctor thinks this guy is on to something with the corn syrup.
Other problems with corn is that it's highly genetically modified. Even if you buy the stuff that says non-GMO corn, how can you really be sure if the company you buy it from doesn't test? No one knows what impact GMO grains have on our bodies. I guess corn also has a lot of mold that people react to.
Quinoa has a soapy layer on the outside that needs to be soaked off. A lot of people react to the sapinoids in quinoa, including me. So, I just don't bother with it.
There are some good cookbooks that talk about soaking grains to make them more digestible. "Nourishing Traditions" and "The Garden of Eating" are the two that I know of.
Claire
Had no idea Quinoa have a layer on it. Thanks for that info.
Those two books are on my list to get.

Yes, I know qUinoa and buckwheat technically are seeds, but oh well.
If white rices give you problems that brown doesn't, then to me it sounds like maybe the lack of fiber, or the high starch-to-fiber ratio might be setting things off balance for your digestive system.Personally, I never liked "ordinary" long grain brown rice. It just turns my stomach such that I can't tolerate it. However, Lundberg's short grain brown (especially the sweet brown) is wonderfully yummy IMO. The texture is so nice - cooks up with a sort of creaminess to it, instead of being all dry and stuff. This also seems to make it less prone to sticking and burning, though I generally never have that happen with anything I make anyway.
I am gonna check that Lundbergs short brown rice you mentioned. Thanks!

Thanks for your replies!
I have always taken my vitamins with food. I could try taking them in the AM and maybe just take one instead of two.
I have no doctor really. The one I see didn't think I had Gluten Intolerance.
I need to go back to see her for a yearly check up in a while. I am gonna try yo talk to her then. Ask for some blood tests to see how I am doing with vitamies and stuff. I have never had problems with Anemia, so I don't think that is the case.
Unfortenately the GNC's I have seen always have soy. Thanks though.

Hi everyone,
Can anyone suggest a good gluten-free hair gel for curly/frizzy hair? Even though I'd initially decided not to worry about my hair gel, I've decided to try to using a gluten-free one for a while.
My hair is dry and tends to be very frizzy, so I need something that will encourage it to curl nicely instead of becoming like a halloween wig as it dries.
Thanks!
Alice
This one is really good! I have curly hair too.
Magick Botanicals Fragrance Free Styling Gel
Despite the brand name they do not use any "botanicals" in their products. They have very few ingredients and are made for people with sensetivities and allergies.
I don't think they use any soy or gluten in any of their other stuff, but I am not 100% sure.

So I am not pregnant but it still seems this part of the board would be the place to ask this...
I have always had very painfull periods. In my teenagers it was so bad I wanted to faint. They have been regular and light.
I was on the pills for like 3 years because of this and my periods were easier after I stopped. But the last maybe 4 years (as I got really bad in my stomach and health) my periods got really long (still pretty light though) and my PMS got really crazy. I had worst possible PMS. It actually scared me it was so bad. Since I stopped with gluten during the summer my PMS has gotten better and it seems maybe the cramps are less bad, but I have had irregular spotting some months (for the last 2 years).
I think my ovulation is pretty irregular too. I bleed very lightly sometimes when I get it and it can be from day 13 to 20 in my cycle.
The last three months I have been figuring out cross contamination and also that I can't have soy and casein. Just over Christmas I realized all the Legumes give me trouble so I just stopped with them too. I am finally staring to feel better, more energy and less bad stomach days.
But now I have been having really, really light spotting for the last week. No strange odor or anything and I am not on the pill.
I went in mid December for my yearly exam and PAP and it was all normal. It was normal last year too and I had a ultrasound donelast year also and it was normal too (had a little water filled cyst that she told me was nothing to worry about, they come and go for many women I guess). I have told the woman I see about the occational spottings and she just wants me to keep track of it. Thing is I have never had it for a week like this. (I had a very stressy thing happen last weekend can stress cause this?)
I used to get Candida infections all the time. Since this summer they have stopped.
Did anyone else experience this in any way? I am thinking it might have to do with the Celiac some how.
I am worried. Hate having more stuff that is messed up. I feel my body is just one "war zone" full of crazyness..
Should I go back again even if it was less than a month ago I was checked and everything felt and looked fine?
I have had my thyriods checked last year and they were fine.
Strange thing is that I had these irregular spottings in June (I stopped with Gluten as best as I could in May) and I got my results from EnteroLab in October and properly stopped with casein and soy (I have had spottings in Nov, Dec and jan). Can it be the diet some how..?
Sorry about my some what comfused post. I probably tried to put too much of my "history" in here.
Thank you for any reply.

The problem is I feel I can't eat more than I do because when I eat the vitamins I go like one hour and then I get hungry. I can eat meat, potatoe and sallad and I get hungry really fast again. I would have to just eat all day long (which I feel I almost do without the vitamins).
The icky part is the blood sugar drops. They freak me out. I have always had a tendency to get low blood sugare my whole life, but with the Vitamins it gets crazy. It actually scares me then.
I do not mind the "speeded" feeling so much and I am able to sleep enough, it is the sugar thing that troubles me. I wonder if there are "low-level" vitamines out there I should try instead or something.
I eat these now:
Open Original Shared Link
They have a ingredients list down there. Maybe if you are good at that stuff you can tell me if they might be "wrong" for me. I am so bad at this.
Thanks for your reply and help!!
I should add that this has just been a problem like the last 4-5 years. Before that I ate Vitamins with no problems. But I didn't have so much health problems back then and didn't know I had celiac/gluten intolerance.

I have noticed that it is actually pretty hard to find shampoos and conditioners that are both wheat and soy free. They are both very common in hair products. They like to put the protein in there to "heal" the hair.
I have used Gluten-Free Savonnerie's whole line for about 4 months and I am very happy with their stuff. Good customer service and low shipping costs. They also have gluten free facilities and test every batch. At least I feel I can be safe when I use their products.
I am a bit paranoid with cross contamination issues when it comes to shampoo and conditioners out there. Seems it is VERY rare a whole line of stuff is gluten free and they might use the same fcility or machine for both gluten/soy free products and the ones who has them.

I can eat rice cakes with no problems. The ones I get are brown rice ones. I also eat A LOT of Enjoy Life Very Berry Bars with no problems at all. This also has brown rice in it.
I have problems with Lundbergs white Jasmine Rice and regular Quinoa. If i just have a bit of it it seems to be okay, but if I eat like a regular serving of it I get naseaus the morning after and get a lot of gas (and stomach ache from the gas) especially from the Quinoa.
It doesn't leave me sick feeling as Casein, Gluten and Legumes. It just seems my stomach can't handle it, maybe it is fiber..I dunno.
Seems brown rice is easier on me so I should just get rid of the white rice and get brown instead. But I haven't had all that much regular brown rice so I am not sure what will happen yet. I am gonna try.
If I eat creme of rice (Bob's Mill) or Quinoa hot cereal I feel really bad usually. Ick! For some reason that is worse.
I eat mostly fish, chicken, turkey and ham (on sandwish) and then veggetables and fruit.
My problem is that I am allergic to nuts, almonds, apple, cherry, plums, peach, pears.
I am a little iffy with allergies when it comes to kiwi and strawberries.
So that leaves me with bananas, raspberry and the different melons to eat. I must confess I am scared of trying exotic fruits because of allergies. (And I am scared of trying new stuff when it comes to food in general because I have been sick so long and I seem to react strong to my intolerances when I get them in my system.)
I also get a lot of stomach ache from brussel sprouts and avocado.
I feel trapped. If I sit and think of this too much I get almost a panicky feeling so I try to just think "here and now".
I have been thinking I should maybe look into getting allergy shots for the nuts and fruits so I can eat more stuff. Not sure how that all works. IF it works.
I also seem to have troubles eating Vitamins. I posted about that in another thread. They are free from the stuff I can't have (Kirkman Labs) but they make me so, so hungry. I feel I have to eat all day when I eat them. I am like good for one hour and then I need to eat again and my blood sugar goes down so much I shake and feel crappy. As soon as I stop with the vitamins this stopps. Really weird. I have had a couple of different Vitamns and they have all been this way so far.
I do take Calsium with no problems.
Food is my enemy. On the good side of things I have finally started to feel better, so I feel I am on the right track with my celiac/gluten intolerance.
I should look into Bob's Mills Buckwheat next time I go to the store.
-
I seem to not be able to eat Vitamins. The last couple of years I keep on getting really bad blood sugar drops and I get super hungry when I eat Vitamins. (Free from the stuff I can't have-Kirkman Labs Brand, but I have tried others too.) So hungry I dream of food at night, have to go up and eat and I feel I have to eat all the time during the day. Every time I stop with the vitamins it takes a couple of days and my body stops being so hungry.
I do feel I get a lot of energy from the Vitamins, almost a bit too much energy even. It is almost hard to go to sleep at night. I almost feel a bit "speeded". It is very strange.
Does anyone else have this problem? I am starting to think I am just weird..
-
I seem to have a problem with rice and quinoa if I eat more than a cup of them a day. maybe a little less than that. Seems if I just take a little of them I am fine, but if I do a bit more I get a lof of gas and feel naseous.
Does anyone esle have this problem?
I think I read somehwre that the body can have problems with grains in general for a while. Not sure if that is true or not. Or if it will go away or..what.
Would be interesting to hear if others have experinced this.

I have a dog and I give her gluten free dog food. Makes me feel safer. It does have Alfalfa in it though, which could be a problem for me, but I haven't noticed any problems so far. I always make sure to wash my hands and stuff after I have fed her.
I did give her a gluten and legume free food before but her stomach couldn't handle it so we had to look for another. It proved to be hard to find one that is soy free.

Ack! Sure isn't making things any easier.
Yes, I did a search on it and it didn't make me any wizer. I searched Guar Gum a while back and that at least said it is a Legume.
