This sounds odd, but HOORAY!!! I cannot tell you how much better I felt once my B12/Folate deficiencies were addressed. I inject myself every 2-3 weeks using a diabetic syringe and needle. It was a life changer once my levels were normal again!!! I did a B12 loading regimen the first month, so my results were noticed very quickly. Most notably, my severe...

Anyone have liver problems?
NNowak replied to Bobbie73's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The celiacs in my family develop NAFLD over time. Hemochromatosis is also prevalent in my family. I don’t believe it’s connected to Celiac, just another autoimmune response. Docs refused to test my iron despite diagnosed deficiencies. Once I did get an iron test, it showed levels consistent with hemochromatosis. A CT scan showed granulomatous changes in ... -
I’m glad you got an official diagnosis and are on the road to recovery. From personal experience, I can give you some suggestions. I dealt with dizziness/mental fog that seemed to worsen over the years. As I was in the process of growing my family, I attributed it to pregnancy brain. However, it only worsened and added symptoms. To keep the story short, ...

I’m prone to DH, too. Thus, I avoid gluten in my cosmetics when I’m dealing with a flare. Anything around the eyes is especially irritating all the time, so I rarely wear makeup. Not sure why any physician would think or even verbalize that these conditions are purposeful. I’ve experienced that, too. Glad you have it figured out!

Yep!! More energy and endurance than I knew what to do with!! I did not normally eat potatoes, pasta or bread unless I had a race or needed to put weight on. You will be be fine. I had an autoimmune flare so I’ve been away from training for a few years, but anxious to return. Really, you will be amazed at the amount of energy realized once you’re on you...

Gym on Monday! Anyone else?
NNowak replied to BuddhaBar's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Keight, Be very hopeful and expectant of your ability to build once you recover. I was diagnosed in 1995 and began running after 6 months of recovery. After 18 months I was cut and could run 15 miles no problem - I became bored after 10 miles so I usually ended it there. I became certified in yoga and spinning, and obtained a third degree from college... -
Gym on Monday! Anyone else?
NNowak replied to BuddhaBar's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You will DEFINITELY have more endurance now that your diet is appropriate for your body. I began distance running once I had recovered a sufficient amount. The energy I had after eating gluten-free and regaining some level of healing was significant. I grew up a farm girl and had previously quite a bit of muscle, but had muscle wasting while waiting for... -
Applying common sense and personal preference to this topic, it’s a reasonable argument that if you weren’t susceptible to viruses before your celiac diagnosis, you won’t be more susceptible after. In fact, now that you are addressing the health of your immune system through proper diet, you will be less susceptible than before your diagnosis. Even thoug...

So sorry to hear of your challenges. Have you considered SIBO? What you describe, particularly the long flares, seems like your GI microbiome is off. This causes malabsorption and many other issues due to deficiencies. Have you considered a functional medicine doctor? They are very thorough and look at the whole body to find the problem rather than treating...

Until the GI is healed (18 months to 3 years) hundreds of foods can cause irritation. Any types of sugar or hard to digest carbs (pasta, rice, potatoes, legumes) will feed unhealthy bacteria causing pain and bloating. Cruciferous vegetables (cauliflower, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage) will cause bloating and pain. Avoid dairy for an extended period of...

Gastritis
NNowak replied to Jomamadawg's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Bone broth daily. Kettle and Fire has several good flavors. You can season with salt, pepper, turmeric, etc. This helps to heal your GI. Keep a food diary of what you eat and how you feel. NSAIDS are treacherous, so eliminate if possible. Feel better! -
She ran TPO antibodies for Hashimoto’s. This particular test catches 70% of Graves. The antibody test more specific to Graves is TRAb catching 90%. My sister has Hashimoto’s. I recently discovered my deceased father had his thyroid removed in his 20s due to hyperthyroidism. His autopsy at age 55 revealed growths on his thyroid as well as cirrhosis. I don...

Posterboy, My functional medicine doctor ran an in depth panel of my thyroid and found Free T4 to be very high. Hashimoto’s was already ruled out, so Grave’s is being investigated. There is a connection with elevated Ferritin, high FT3 and FT4, low D and low B12/Folate. I don’t live near a busy road, in fact I’m blessed with country living. So I canno...

Weak positive
NNowak replied to karategal777's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Agreed. If there’s any family history of autoimmune diseases, some standard testing needs to be done. -
Migraines are definitely associated with celiac. Many many factors contribute to migraines, which also occur with a celiac. Definitely seek help as your migraines diminish the quality of life. “Don’t worry,” is not an acceptable plan of care. Vitamin deficiencies with celiac can cause or contribute to migraines. Dairy sensitivity can contribute to migraines. Slee...

Weak positive
NNowak replied to karategal777's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, definitely push for the EGD so you get biopsy results. Positive is positive - there’s no “weak” or “strong” in disease diagnosis. Like when you take a pregnancy test, it’s either a plus or minus. Even if the plus is very light, you’re pregnant. Once you go gluten-free with your diet, the biopsy will be sketchy. You deserve a clear diagnosis. -
Interesting!! The GI jumped to gallbladder issues........my medical history clearly shows my gallbladder was removed 2 months before my Celiac diagnosis. Should have been a red flag they didn’t refer to my medical history, or their own notes. I’m fortunate because my FM doc has also treated me for my vertebrae and rib fractures the past 3 years. Sh...

Thanks Posterboy!! I weaned off PPIs after the discovery of deficiencies in August 2019. I give myself injections of B12, which raised all my other Bs. It also has helped with stomach pain and the stool issues. Funny, the GIs state they have never heard of that, despite many research articles stating just that. Bs are soooooo essential!! My functional...

How long does it take to know if you have been glutened?
NNowak replied to 97133620's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Aah. I see. I have both genes, too. My 2 boys have the HLA DQ8 gene and my 2 girls have the HLA DQ2 gene. So your question regarding how quickly one reacts.......depends on the amount of healing that’s already taken place, the amount of gluten ingested, stress, etc. I tend to get itchy hands a few hours after ingestion, a dull headache around t... -
Thank you, Posterboy. I remember you posting about left side sleeping before. That is usually how I sleep - propped up on a huge pillow. I addition to the esophagitis, I have had pain in the URQ of my stomach which gets worse on my right side. PPI use since 2007 clearly didn’t help matters, potentially contributing to my deficiencies, too. I’v...

Just curious, what is a double celiac? -
My husband and I flew from the Michigan cold to the California sunshine yesterday. There were several delays making the trip 12 hours instead of 6. In the meantime, I ate shrimp cocktail and enjoyed a glass of wine. My hubby (gluten-free DF, too) had a seafood Cobb with vinegar and oil and a vodka tonic with Tito’s. The airport had plenty of Kind Bars and C...

At a time when I was having multiple miscarriages, I spent countless hours researching cosmetics - I had already addressed everything else. Briefly, it didn’t make a difference. Celiacs can not possibly get enough gluten from cosmetics to illicit an autoimmune response. As celiacs we can easily get OCD about management of the condition. RELAX!!...

We all come from different places at the time of our diagnosis, thus we mourn differently. What you’re feeling is perfectly normal. I was very ill when diagnosed, with many of my systems not functioning properly (vision, muscles, GI) so I would have done ANYTHING to feel better. Once I recovered I became a distance runner and eventually became certified t...

The best I’ve ever felt was when I healed after my diagnosis in my mid 20s. I KNOW this is what you have to look forward to because you’re quite the firecracker. Your life is full and you have dreams to achieve. Also, once healed, the chances of a major set back with accidental cross contamination are slim. So travel is possible without bringing your ref...
