  1. Hi Sam101, I am not a medical professional. So please don't take this as medical advice. What you are describing can be pretty typical for celiac disease or non celiac gluten sensitivity. Phobias are very real, and I respect that. Out of curiosity, have you seen a gastroenterologist? Did the doctors order a full celiac panel? If not, you...
  2. I think that it is a good idea to not use it. Honestly, I think that the only way to rule out a true allergy would be through skin testing. (I also have been told that blood allergy testing is not always accurate.) That being said, it is possible that it is an intolerance. I just have not heard of an intolerance causing facial changes.
  3. Hi! I am not a doctor, so please don't take this as medical advice. Have you pursued any allergy testing? If there is any facial swelling, then that could be cause for concern. It is possible that you could have an allergy. I would suggest that you talk to your doctor. And, if you are not comfortable with what you are told, it is totally ok to get...
  4. One thing that I really appreciate about the celiac community is the fact that even though our stories and situations (economic or otherwise) are diverse, we can still relate to the stories of the food challenges that we all face. I honestly feel bad for the family. Not being able to find food is one of my biggest concerns about traveling. I feel like...
  5. I think that it is pretty typical to have a denial stage. It's part of the grief process.
  6. I think that it is a good idea that she won't be the only one going gluten free.
  7. You are very welcome. I believe that we need each other. 🙂 Social gatherings are often difficult for people with celiac. There is often a good bit of awkwardness, and it can feel very isolating. She's going to need your support. She may not say it. Also, is your family all going gluten free?
  8. I am glad that you are finding people to connect with! That will be super helpful. It sounds like you are making a good start. One thing that I think was helpful for me was that the last several weeks before my endoscopy, I allowed myself to eat all those things that I knew I would miss. It was kind of like a "chance to say goodbye." In the long...
  9. I am not a medical professional. I did a Google search, and it appears that they likely are the same.
  10. Hi Squalls, First off, I just want to say that your daughter is blessed to have a supportive parent like you. It is going to be a roller coaster ride. The first little while can be a bit overwhelming. You have found a good "community" here. Don't eliminate gluten until all testing is done. When you do start to eliminate gluten, you will need to...
  11. Getting "glutened" can cause a variety of symptoms. Pain and vomiting are pretty common.
  12. Hi Lindquist! My understanding is that the reason we get really stinky bowel movements is that the food we are eating doesn't get fully digested. The food then starts to ferment or rot. And what we smell is the rotten food we are passing. If I understand what I have read and heard correctly, most of the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients we absorb...
  13. Hi Cari. T! First off, I just want to say that your son is blessed to have a mom like you! I realize that you are probably in shock right now. And you are probably feeling really overwhelmed. I tell people that when I started down this path, it was like I was trying to get a drink of water from a high pressure fire hose! I am also glad that you...
  14. I am not a medical professional. All of the symptoms you have mentioned can be caused by celiac. I agree that with your family history it is likely celiac. However, the only way to get a definite diagnosis is through the testing.
  15. Hi Charles! I have seen people posting about this as well. I would suggest that @knitty kitty might have some helpful posts. I would suggest that if you are planning to add vitamin or mineral supplements, make sure that you talk with your doctor/pharmacist to make sure that they won't cause any drug interactions.
  16. Hi Jen, One thing that l have learned over the past 18 months is that celiac disease has many, many, many symptoms. So it can manifest itself in many ways. Some people with celiac have a lot of GI symptoms. Others may not have any. I had a really hard time emotionally with my diagnosis. I think that was largely because it was a total shock, and...
  17. Cheating could definitely cause all of those symptoms. Here again, I am not a medical professional, so this is how I understand it. The damage that is done to our small intestines causes "leaky bowel". Then we tend to develop intolerances. Some of the intolerances may improve as we stay on the gluten free diet. Others may not improve. Also many people...
  18. Hi! I am not a medical professional, so I could be wrong. I think that the typical celiac blood panel tests for 4 different antibodies, one of which is tTG- IgA. It sounds like you have the blood tests covered. Sometimes I see people talking about genetic testing. But that would only tell you if you have the "celiac genes". It would not tell you if the genes...
  19. Hi Wafflegirl! I agree with @trents. You need to be seen by a different doctor. It is entirely possible to have either a false negative, or have something "turn on" your celiac genes in five years. I would suggest asking your coworker if they have a doctor that they would recommend.
  20. I see. That does make it harder. I live in a small apartment as well, so I understand tight spaces and limited resources. Cross contamination is going to be a challenge. Just a few thoughts to start with... 1) I think that having your own separate dishes and utensils and storing them separately is pretty important. That includes toasters. Would it be...
  21. I agree with you. I would be concerned about it too. I hope you don't mind if I ask a few questions. I'm just trying to make sure I understand what you are dealing with. 😊 Do you have your own separate dishes/kitchen utensils that are stored separately? Are you sharing dishes and utensils with the others? Are you washing all the dishes at the same ti...
  22. I would not try to decontaminate the sponges. You should definitely have your own sponge, and I would suggest that you keep yours separated from the other sponge.
  23. I think that we all feel like whining sometimes. So, give yourself a little grace.😊 One thing that I have come to realize is that unless a person has lived with celiac disease or a form of gluten sensitivity, they don't have any comprehension of what we experience or what it takes to keep us safe. They also won't think about cross contamination. It...
  24. I had an appointment with an allergist. He told me that it is possible to have both celiac (which I do have) and a wheat allergy (got a negative blood test on that one). If someone has a wheat allergy that could cause any kind of allergic response, including anaphylaxis. I would assume that the same would be true of the other "gluten grains" as well.
  25. I am sorry that they didn't give you the results of the test like they should have. It absolutely IS your concern, and you do need to know the results.
