Celiac Disease vs. Gluten Sensitivity: How to Tell the Difference
CBird commented on Scott Adams's article in Allergy vs. Intolerance
I have NCGS, my younger sister has Celiac, my daughter has NCGS. My younger sister nearly died from starvation at 6mo old in 1948 until they thought to try a Celiac diet. My daughter no longer goes into the hospital for unexplained pain and vomiting. Where my sister's symptoms might be starving, I have all these other symptoms like IBS, depression/anxiety...- 1 comment

Celiac Rates Among First-Degree Child Relatives Run Between 11% and 14%
CBird commented on Jefferson Adams's article in Latest Research
My sister nearly died of starvation in 1948 at 6mo old of celiac. I never knew that family story also applied to me. I suffered from many chronic conditions, IBS-depression/anxiety/panic attacks among them, until I was 62yr old. I haven't had any of those conditions since going gluten free, even going off psychotropic meds for anxiety. BUT… in 2010 when I...- 4 comments

When that 'at tee tood' comes at me from someone, I now say "then you won't mind paying the emergency room bill if I eat that!" I once had a deli counter clerk roll his eyes when he suggested something and I said I can't eat that with the gluten in it. So I said the above to him. He just stared at me with a stunned look. I was fed up!

I have yet to find a source of calcium that is gluten free. I have NSGS, so does my daughter, and my sister has celiac. I'm being asked by my doctor to take calcium. If you know of a gluten-free source, please let me know as well.

Since going gluten free in 2010 I've had no more episodes of IBS, I used to get them every 3-4 mo. No more depression/anxiety & panic attacks. I took psych meds for 13 years, going off those at the same time, with no need to take those pills anymore. Sister almost died of starvation in 1948 at 6mo old, before being diagnosed with celiac. My daughter also...

What's the Status of New Celiac Disease Drug Treatments?
CBird commented on Jefferson Adams's article in Diagnosis, Testing & Treatment
Interesting idea, being diagnosed celiac certainly might have made things a bit less awkward. Sometime I get fed up enough that I simply say celiac to avoid lengthy unwanted explanations or the eye rolls. Doctors and nurses however require explanation. It's really annoying when it's clear by their faces they don't have a clue what I'm talking about, or the...- 11 comments

What's the Status of New Celiac Disease Drug Treatments?
CBird commented on Jefferson Adams's article in Diagnosis, Testing & Treatment
I'm not asking that the world give up wheat either. Nor do I 'demand' the world bend to my needs. Right now as a NCGS I'm not acknowledged. I'd like NOT to have to educate my doctors about my condition. I like people to NOT roll their eyes when I order food that I can eat. I'd rather not have to frustratingly tell them 'how about you pay the emergency room...- 11 comments

What's the Status of New Celiac Disease Drug Treatments?
CBird commented on Jefferson Adams's article in Diagnosis, Testing & Treatment
I'm getting resentful at how the U.S. medical world sees the medical need to be gluten free as a 'disease', rather than just being different. I'm not in 'disease' if I stay away from gluten, I'm healthy. Are they looking for drugs to "cure" peanut allergies? I don't think I should have to educate my doctor. I don't think I should have to take a drug to get...- 11 comments

What's the Status of New Celiac Disease Drug Treatments?
CBird commented on Jefferson Adams's article in Diagnosis, Testing & Treatment
Granted I'm not celiac, my sister is; I'm NCGS. I'm starting to resent the idea of continuing to treat NCGS, possibly even Celiac, as a disease. We just happen not to be able to eat wheat in a wheat-centric country when there are viable substitutes we can safely eat. Why should we have to take a drug in order to fit in to a culture that's refusing to acknowledge...- 11 comments

I discovered needing to be gluten free in 2010 at 62yr old. I'd experienced bouts of depression, anxiety, and panic attacks since my early 20s. I actually was on meds for anxiety/panic and had to go off due to loss of medical insurance at that point. No more panic attacks, anxiety, depression AND no more painful IBS trips to the emergency room. I also became...

I had been on Zoloft 1yr and Effexor 12yr before discovering I was Non Celiac Gluten Sensitive (NCGS) at 62 years of age, 2010. I'd suffered from depression, clinical anxiety/panic attacks since 21yr old. I discovered this on my own. In & out of therapy for decades. I had to be tapered off Effexor as I was addicted (yes it can happen). I was a graphic...
