Extreme fatigue
JenniK replied to Reneemb's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I’m worried about your son too! very scary that he cannot really wake. Did you get any answers or test results yet? I pray that he is improving. -
I had an endoscopy and colonoscopy recently for chronic upper abdominal pain, which i thought was an ulcer, but they didn’t find one. I have been gluten-free for 3 or so (?) years now with presumed celiac. Gastroenterologist told me before procedures that he cannot (most likely) diagnose celiac because i was gluten-free for long time before seeing him. T...

Gluten free in a hurricaine shelter?
JenniK replied to Oldturdle's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Interestingly, I also lived in China for 7 years. This was before knew i was celiac, so was not gluten-free at all. I was sick ALL the time with D and DH. No one ever suggested trying gluten-free to me- only IBS and anxiety. well, back here after years of gluten-free, I don’t have D, don’t have DH and don’t have anxiety. I enjoyed my time there, made... -
Gluten free in a hurricaine shelter?
JenniK replied to Oldturdle's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Me too! I am so happy for you that you could adapt to that very stressful situation and not react horribly while you were in the shelter. We can make all the best efforts, but Life can still throw us a curveball, and I am so glad that you were able to weather it without feeling sicker. best wishes for the hurricane recovery. Jen -
Hi all, I have seen many mentions of celiac folks also needing to eliminate dairy. After years of gluten-free, I am now trying it to see if it helps my general inflammation, ulcer symptoms and belly bloat. It does seem to be helping, but I feel like I am so hungry now and am not sure how to get enough protein. I am no longer a big fan of meat and don...

Genetic Test Results
JenniK replied to mspat3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That’s great news about no celiac. Hopefully that means you can be less stringent with some limitations. I would just love to be able to avoid gluten but not worry about cross contamination. Maybe you can get to that point? How did your body react to eating gluten for three weeks? how much did you eat? i have to make the same decision for my procedures i... -
So i had a first meeting with a new gastro today who said a couple things that contradict all I have read before. What do you think about these statements? 1) He said that if someone responds quickly to gluten-free diet, the “it can’t be celiac. Celiac takes months for the villi to regrow before there would be any change.” Me: “even diarrhea? Becaus...

Genetic Test Results
JenniK replied to mspat3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I had my appt this morning. My doctor was (friendly and patient at least) , but also not encouraging me to go back on gluten for the endoscopy because he said he can’t be sure how long it would take for the damage to become clear after having been gluten-free for so long. He said the endoscopy is not the diagnostic absolute for celiac ‘that is used to be.... -
I very very rarely eat in restaurants. If I do, it is steak and potatoes. I cook most of my foods (no gluten-free frozen pizza, etc) I do not eat much factory made gluten-free food except sometimes potato chips and chex cereal, yogurts, peanut butter and nestle chocolate chips to make homemade cookies. Otherwise it is meat, vegetables, fruit and cheese. ...

Genetic Test Results
JenniK replied to mspat3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Remember, you can choose to eat gluten (despite the rude scheduling lady’s non-helpfulness) on your own. In your case, i think i would. It seems a waste to go through that procedure anyway but not get a definitive answer. also, if the dr is as much of a clueless jerk as the receptionist, you could change Gastroenterologists before you endure the expense a... -
Hi all, My gastro appt just got moved up a couple months due to a last minute cancellation. Now i feel unprepared. Help? I saw a gastro a couple years ago who listened to all my symptoms and told me to consider myself celiac and no real need to go through the endoscopy because “you have celiac”. This was a relief at the time but questionable adv...

Stomach ulcer
JenniK replied to Caterina0909's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Did you ever get any clarification about your ulcer and especially the cause? i have what my doctor believes is Duodenal ulcer. I also tested negative for h pylori and have no history of NSAIDS. Dr did prescribe Famotidine (prescription strength ‘pepcid’) which i took for three weeks. It did help the pain and excessive bloating, but from day 1 on... -
Sounds like a hormonal issue. Does Beyond Meat have soy? I don’t have any research handy, but in researching hormonal issues through the years, I read many times to avoid soy.

I think it sounds like DH too. Also, the tingling feeling before eruption sounds like shingles. Are they all on one side of the body/ spine. Shingles usually is on one side. I have had both DH and shingles. In my experience, my shingles (several reoccurrences over the years) feels more like random burning or pain. (Mine is mostly internal, so not a lot...

Ugh! This is frustrating! i too am having DH flares after being very careful (so i thought.) i’. I’m getting discouraged again because i am back to feeling like there is nothing I can eat. I have been really enjoying greek yogurt the past few months, but yes, my DH is threatening me and my scalp is crazy itchy and flakey. Maybe the yogurt? Then i r...

What Brands of Makeup and Cosmetics are Gluten-Free?
JenniK commented on Jefferson Adams's article in Gluten-Free Foods & Beverages
I recently tried the Ilia (ilia—not dr liia- confusing!) historically, i have very sensitive skin, and i don’t like the feel of foundation makeup on my skin at all! I hate it, and have been blessed with a good conplexion, so i don’t wear it at all. But middle age is taking its punishment on my looks now, so sort of on a fluke, i tried ilia foundation and c... -
It definitely could be caused by celiac. It could be in cosmetics, shampoo, etc, or it could just be caused by the gluten you’ve been eating. Since DH can have a delayed onset and delayed clearing up after one stops eating gluten, it can be hard to tell at first. Since you just started gluten-free, maybe do a good look into your toiletry products, but d...

I honestly think this is good advice. I am frequently thankful that i did not have to make all these changes until after i had been married for many years. I have told my sons that because they’ve learned to look out for gluten for their mom, they will be great boyfriends to girls with celiac, and they should ‘advertise’ that. I know a lovely young lady ...

Hi all, Does anyone have any advice about slow healing, and the frustration of weight gain and inflammation despite giving so many things up? I was gluten-free for 2-3 years and I got sooo much better in so many ways. I never dreamed I had celiac. I thought I had leaky gut or IBS that gluten exacerbated until I was so much better that I believed I had totally...

Nausea and Vomiting Are Key Symptoms of Gluten Exposure in Celiac Patients
JenniK commented on Jefferson Adams's article in Latest Research
Hi, so sorry about your wife’s nausea. I don’t have chronic nausea with my celiac, but i did have it with all three of my pregnancies- all day, every day for months. The things that helped me immensely were Coca cola with ice (not diet) and lemon drops (hard lemon sugar candy to suck on.) Now, neither of those is health food, and i do not drink soda, us...- 45 comments

Nausea and Vomiting Are Key Symptoms of Gluten Exposure in Celiac Patients
JenniK commented on Jefferson Adams's article in Latest Research
I find this article very interesting in terms of vomiting vs D and the specified “after being on a gluten free diet.” Before i was gluten-free, I spent years with chronic D, which cleared up like a miracle within days of gluten-free. Vomiting was never really an issue. Since being gluten-free, vomiting seems to be the reaction to be glutened. It was so ...- 45 comments

FYI: I tried to quote just the part about lettuce, but it will only quote the whole thing... ANYhoo, lettuce gives me major problems too. My younf adult kids make fun of me, saying, ‘Mom, you literally just said that you can’t even eat lettuce! No one is allergic to lettuce!’ But lettuce rips me up. I can eat a whole spinach salad any time, but lettice goes ...
