I have already spoken to my husband. I do not feel it is for me to confront his mother any further. He has spoken to her and she claims that whatever I want is fine though I will believe it when I see it. I agree with many of the posts that this shower has nothing at all to do with me or my child. I am apparently a mere inconvenience at my own shower. I have spoken with my mother who says she would be happy to have the shower at her home and serve gluten-free food. There is no logical reason that my MIL should object to this since she won't have to pay for anything or set anything up she merely has to show up. There is a gluten-free italian restaurant (which my MIL already vetoed) about 10 minutes away from my parents that I am sure we could have cater or else we could just cook our own food. I believe people will be there for me and my child not to attend some fancy party. Wish me luck!

I don't know if anyone else has been through this but this has to be the pinacle of insensitive relatives. My mother in law informs me that she wants to have MY BABY SHOWER in a normal italian restaurant where I could obviously eat nothing. When I pointed this out to her she said "oh that's ok we can just bring special food for you" It's my shower!! It's supposed to be my day! I'm supposed to sit there eating dry lettuce while everyone else gorges themselves on lasagna and garlic bread?? AND she wants to have the shower December 10th, I pointed out that my best friend in the world is pregnant and due December 9th so she would probably not be able to go. She replied "that's ok, she'll just have to miss it" So I am supposed to sit there and spend my shower at some gluten-fest eating nothing and I can't even have my best friend there? I am so mad I feel like my head could explode.

So I finally have a due date. I am due February 1st. Looks like there will be lots of February babies. Must have been something in the air this spring.

I really sympathize with you. I went through this exact thing earlier in the week. I work in Manhattan and its restaurant week. A bunch of my coworkers are going out to this one restaurant where there is absolutely nothing I can eat. They asked me to go and (politely) I said I would really like to go but unfortunately there is really nothing on the menu that I could safely eat. So one of my "friends" at work rolls her eyes and calls me a pain. As if I enjoy being left out of everything all the time. This really set me off and I just got really angry at the whole gluten-eating world. I am fully aware that I am much healthier, do not have a permanent stomach ache or perpetual brain fog but I can't help feeling sad sometimes.
We all need to vent at some point. That's why it's nice to have this site where people actually understand how you feel even if the people in your life don't. Any time you need to vent we are here.

The only diet more restrictive than a Celiac diet is a pregnant Celiac diet.
I know I'm off the subject (and I TOTALLY understand what you're going through and completely sympathize), but what has to be different for a pregnant celiac diet? Why can't it be a "normal" celiac diet?

Ok, I didn't know this stuff either until I got pregnant. You are not allowed to have cold cuts. I thought this was ridiculous when I heard it from one of my pregnant friends but a combo of internet research and my dr confirmed. Apparently they are afraid you are going to get listeria which pregnant women are very prone to. You can only eat tuna or salmon or any other fish with high mercury content once a week. I used to eat tons of tuna and salmon before i got pregnant. You can't eat sushi which I used to eat constantly. More than ever I am afraid of being glutened because of the risk of fetal birth defects so if there is the smallest chance something might not be safe I avoid it completely. I guess it depends on what you normally eat but my diet has become substantially restricted.

Ok, I realize I'm pregnant and maybe it's just the hormones, but I'm really truly depressed. I feel like our lives are so much harder than non-Celiacs. I'm tired of my "friends" turning up their noses when I bring in gluten-free food or mention going to gluten-free restaurants. I just feel like yelling "I have to eat this way all the time! You can't suck it up for one meal! Do you have any idea how lucky you are?"
I just can't seem to get used to this. I was diagnosed in November so it hasn't even been a year. I honestly feel like this is some sort of nightmare I can't manage to wake up from. Now that I am pregnant my diet is even more restricted. The only diet more restrictive than a Celiac diet is a pregnant Celiac diet.
Please someone tell me it gets easier. Thanks for listening.

That's great! I'm going to start planning the trip now. Daveyboy, my husband and I were thinking of going to Dublin for a long weekend. I will check out the Irish Celiac forum but can you recommend any restaurants you like in Dublin?

So I am thinking of taking my first vacation since I was diagnosed with Celiac. I have taken many cruises before since the cost works out so well but honestly the thought of a vacation based around food scared me to death. I wrote to Norwegian to ask if they could accomodate a Celiac and this was their response

Please be advised that Celiac Disease is pretty common among our sailing guests. We deal with this type of condition on a daily basis. What we do for guests with Celiac Disease is send a list of items (see enclosed) were guests can choose different items that they would like for us to have available for their cruise. In addition, we advise the Executive Chef and dining staff ahead of time so that they are aware and can prepare to meet with the guest upon embarkation. At that time the guest can further discuss meal preparations and dietary needs. Once a reservation has been made, we would need to know the reservation number. Please note that depending on the itinerary we would need to have the list with your selection return to us at least 2 weeks prior to sailing or 2 1/2 months prior to sailing (for European Cruises/South Ameria).

I love Mozzarelli's. I make it a point to go at least once a week. I actually like the pizza better than the pizza at Rissoteria but I am a big fan of sicilian pizza so I like the thicker crust. I always go during the week. The last time I went they had gluten-free carrot cake (which in hindsight I should have gotten since I love carrot cake) I am probably going again tomorrow so maybe I will check out the desserts then.

I have heard that if you get glutened while you are pregnant you can have a miscarriage. I was wondering how true this was. Should I be afraid to eat out anywhere in case I accidentally get glutened? Should I never go to a dinner party or eat other peoples' food? I have been very worried about this. Please let me know.

Update on San Diego (about 10 minutes off the coast) - A few hours later, it's a perfect day ... not a cloud in the sky ! 71 or so & awesome !
I have always wanted to go to San Diego and you have just given me one more reason! It's 96 with the heat index in NYC.

Hi!
This is sort of a travel question but please indulge me. I am writing since I have heard that Coeliac is quite common in Ireland so I thought it might be a good place to visit. I really wanted to ask people who actually live in Ireland if restaurants are accomodating to people with Coeliac, if it is difficult to get gluten-free food etc. I really need to be careful since I am three months pregnant and it's very dangerous to get glutened when you are pregnant. I would really appreciate any help anyone can give!!

I stumbled across this while on the net. I guess carry out containers made of wheat starch are supposed to be biodegradable. This is the first I have heard of this but the thought of carry out containers made of gluten completely freaks me out so hopefully this will not catch on.

Thank you guys so much!! So I got the book "What to expect when you are expecting" and it has a whole nutrition section. So I 'm reading through it and I figure, hey, this isn't that difficult, until I get to the whole grain section. According to the book you need 6 servings a day of grain. Now if you don't have celiac it actually seems pretty easy to follow, put some wheat germ or granola in your yogurt , have a few slices of wheat bread (you see where I am going with this ) So now I am panicking. I eat rice but honestly, how much rice can I eat? I guess I could try and get gluten-free bread but most of the bread I have tried is vile and really expensive. Any thoughts?

I just found out I am pregnant! While I am thrilled I am also concerned about getting a balanced diet while I am pregnant. I seem to be suffering from all day "morning sickness" but I want to make sure I am eating right. (When I can actually eat ) Since everyone has been so helpful with all my other non-pregnancy celiac related questions, I figured I would ask you guys. Does anyone have any advice? Even advice in general about things to do and not do now that I am pregnant. Any advice you offer would be greatly appreciated!!

The same thing happened to me last night! I went to a place in NYC after work. I spoke to the waitress about my Celiac and she spoke to the chef and assured me that the Ceviche did not have gluten. I can tell it did not have gluten since in addition to my gi symptoms I get very bad brain fog and have motor probs after eating gluten and honestly I am not NEARLY this sick after eating gluten. I had the Ceviche at 6:30 last night and I still can't eat. I have been trying to eat this bowl of chicken soup since 2pm. It's so frustrating that I can do everything that I am supposed to do and still wind up so sick.

Since I started the thread I feel compelled to post a follow up. I just had half a gluten-free brownie. I REALLY don't feel well. I threw the rest out. Mind you, I felt fine after the first one so I am guessing there was just some cross contamination with this one.

Pretty much from the minute I got pregnant I have had the worst chinese food cravings, usually stuff that's all gluten like egg rolls and lo mein. I would like to learn to make some of this stuff at home if it is possible. Does anyone make Chinese food at home? I know how to make stir fry. I mean gluten-free versions of noodle and fried dishes that you cannot get in gluten-free restaurants. Can anyone help?
