Just to throw in my two cents here. . .for a bottle for your own (filtered) water what you want is a bottle made by Nalgene. . .they sell them in Canada at Mountain Equipment Co-op (I think you can also get them online). They are made of a special kind of chemically stable plastic which is photo-stable and won't leach nasty chemicals into your liquids. They're also reusable for up to 25 years, virtually indestructible (I drove my friend's SUV over mine a couple of years ago. . .) and friendly to the environment. Just toss them in your dishwasher or fill with boiling water and soap and shake once a week to keep them smelling nice.
And, just a teeny tiny obvious question here. . .what's wrong with plain old tap water?? Unless you're drinking from an artesian well or you live in a developing nation, the tap water should be perfectly safe to drink (with or without filtering). . .and in my experience usually tastes nicer than most bottled waters (The only place in the developed world where I won't drink tap water is Venice. . .and NOBODY drinks the tap water in Venice. . .not even the dogs).
I am sure there are several places in the country where tap water is better. I live about 30 minutes east of Manhattan where, I assure you, the tap water is not better.

Last year(before I was gluten free) I drank alot of bottled water at work, I got to the point where I couldn't drink it anymore without getting mild stomach discomfort. I started taking glass bottles full of my Brita filtered water from home and that worked well for my stomach. But glass is so much heavier than the plastic bottles! Some people thought I was a little excentric.
I will definitely try that. Was it glass bottles that had been filled with other things or did you buy special bottles?

I have the same problem as you do. I noticed it very early on. Certain brands would make me sick immediately. Now, the only water that I can drink is fresh Poland Spring water. If it has been sitting in the bottle for over a month, it bothers me. I actually get dehydrated when I drink "bad" water. It seems ridiculous, but I'm happy to know I'm not the only one. You should see what brand works for you. I hope you find one.

I tried bottled Poland Spring water last night with the same effect. When you say "fresh" what do you mean? AFAIK I cannot tolerate any bottled water. I guess it could be the plastic but I am now drinking bottled orange juice in a plastic bottle. It's probably not that big a deal but I have noticed when I got to people houses all they seem to have is water and soda.

I've eaten successfully at my local Outback many times. I would say about 95% of the time I don't get glutened. When I do get glutened, it's not very badly and I can generally barely tell, just a bit of bloating. Do be careful ordering any salads as they are the easiest to get glutened via cross contamination. I think all of the times I've been glutened it's been either because of a salad (which I won't eat there any more, just order an extra side instead) or from a dirty glass that had a bread crumb baked to the side from the dishwasher. Other than that, they're really good about things. Ask them to rinse your glass and plate before serving you just to be extra safe. I have great luck with my Outback.
Carraba's I haven't been so lucky. However, to their credit, the Carraba's in my town is very new and they don't have near the experience dealing with Celiac as our Outback. Perhaps they will get better about things over time.
I have never been to Carraba's. I got very sick at the Outback but I think I am in the minority. The server and the manager seemed extremely attentive to my Celiac. I did get the Ceasar salad and I am guessing some crumbs got in my salad accidentally.

You can if you accidentally get some in your mouth. But , for me gluten in my shampoo makes my head itch like crazy and my hair sheds more than if I use a gluten-free shampoo.
Now the you mention it, my hair does shed alot and my scalp is always extremely dry. Someone mentioned bumble and bumble being gluten free. I might switch over to that one and see if I notice a difference.

Hi,
People keep mentioning gluten in their shampoos etc. How can people tell? When I look at my shampoo and body products it just looks like a list of chemicals. What should I be looking for? Can anyone help?
Thanks!!!!!!!!

How can you tell if your shampoo/conditioner/body wash/body lotion has gluten in it? I have checked the ingredients on all and nothing says wheat or oatmeal or any other grain. It just looks like a long list of chemicals.

This could have been me posting this thread. I was diagnosed about 3 months ago and while I am thrilled not to be constantly sick I find myself starving all the time. I actually eat almost exclusively protein since I know it will not make me sick. This is all pretty new to me.

Hi,
I have been looking through gluten-free cookbooks and find myself a bit overwhelmed. I was looking at one today that for every recipe seemed to require three different types of flour in different combinations (one part this, two parts that etc) I confess I am no Julia Child.
I just want a baking cookbook with simple recipes that will taste great without taking the entire day cooking or spending a fortune on ingredients. Does anyone know of anything like that?
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!

Hi,
I have found gluten-free soy sauce but not gluten-free teriyaki sauce. I get very sick from take out chinese food even if I just get steamed chicken/shrimp so I thought I would try and buy some shrimp and make it myself. Does anyone cook asian food at home? Is there a gluten-free teriyaki sauce that people like?
Thanks!!

Hi,
I know it sounds silly since what on earth in water can make you sick. However, every time I have bottled water I get incredibly sick almost immediately. I used to drink it constantly but now I can't drink it at all. I would ask a gastroenterologist about it but I think it would just be a waste of time since the dr would probably have the same reaction that everyone else seems to have. Has this happened to anyone else? Is there anything I can do?

Hi,
I am really trying to help out my mother in law and find a gluten-free cornbread recipe for Christmas. I got super-sick after Thanksgiving at her place so she is now going out of her way to make sure it does not happen again. Does anyone have a quick and easy cornbread recipe that they like?
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

Who said that that ginger ale was not gluten free? I had not heard that before. What is the ingredient? Please clarify.
Thanks.
The owner of a gluten-free restaurant said that Seagrams ginger ale was not gluten-free. Something about the natural coloring?

Which outback did you eat at? I was thinking of trying the one in Merrick, ny
I have never been to the one in Merrick. This one is in Westbury, NY.

Hi,
I'm sure someone has asked this as some point but I couldn't find it. I drink caffeine free coke and it never occurred to me that it could have gluten until someone told me that seagrams ginger ale(of which I have a case in my apt) is not gluten-free. Is caffeine free coke safe? Does anyone know? How about sprite? Is there a list somewhere?
Thanks!!!!!!!

I vote for Charles. It is actually one of the names that I want but I can't seem to get my husband on board.
Tyler is a very nice name as well but speaking as someone who has had 9 friends give birth this year alone, and 8 more who are currently pregnant (no I am not exaggerating, it's genuinely bizarre) I can tell you that Tyler is going to be a very common name. He will probably be one of four Tylers in his class that will probably include five girls named Taylor. Apparently Taylor is the new Jennifer. However, since it is going to be his name forever I say if you really like Tyler than go for it. You have to pick something you love.

I was a little hesitant about eating here after I had read mixed reviews on the boards. I went there with my husband last night and it was fantastic. Not only was the food terrific but it was the first time in as long as I can remember that I did not get sick from eating out while still being able to have a normal meal (I went to the Legal Seafood near my apt and ordered off of the gluten-free menu and although I did not get sick the food was awful and I got sick from the Outback gluten-free menu). The owner, Joanne, is a celiac and was incredibly friendly and helpful. She bakes her own gluten-free bread which is quite good. I know someone on the board had mentioned getting sick there. I can tell everyone what I ordered off of the gluten-free menu. I got mozzerella sticks (better than most non-gluten-free that I have had) and veal parm. My husband is not a celiac and he loved the food as well. I had it for lunch again today since there was alot left over and I still feel fine.

We used the Pamela's cookies in a food demo this week and I found them to be too dry too...
By the way, YEP 123 Gluten Free Products are AMAZING!!!! They always turn out just the way they should... I'm just frustrated cos my local store stopped carrying the Aarons dinner rolls mix... man I miss those... (I can't afford to order them online...)
It's so funny you posted this. We have a pot luck at work and I brought these cookies in today. I make them differently. I use an 8 x 8 pan and bake them almost like brownies at 350 degrees for 20 min. This is the same way I used to make regular cookies before I was diagnosed. I had such a hard time telling when the cookies were ready the conventional way and this way they always come out perfect. I use butter as well. I tend to add things to the cookies, like coconut or peanut butter chips or gluten-free frosting on top just to jazz them up a bit. Definitely try again, the people at work are raving about them.

Hi,
This time of year there are so many holiday parties. My husband just took me to his firm's holiday party and I was afraid to take food since I didn't know what was in anything. I went to a holiday party last night and just stuck to cheese and olives because I was afraid to eat anything else. I feel like I have developed a sort of food aversion for unknown food since when I look at it all I see if how sick I could get if I eat it. How do you all handle holiday parties not thrown by close friends who don't mind all of the questions about what is safe?
-
I've found that when I go to Outback I need to avoid their salads as I always end up finding a crumb or crumbs from croutons in it. I was told that they keep each salad ingredient in a bin and that the bins can get cross contaminated easily. Also, I always ask for everything without butter and seasoning because I've heard that not all of the butter at their restaurant is gluten free.
I really appreciate everyone's feedback. People keep mentioning tickets. What are these tickets? Noone gave me a ticket or put anything special on my table. It was a shame I got so sick cuz the food was actually really good. I had a holiday party last night and was still too sick to eat anything. To make it worse the party was out of state and was a two hour drive. I was well enough a day later to make the trip but just barely. I'm sure it would be better next time if I made a big enough deal out of it, but I honestly don't feel like getting sick again. Especially this time of year when there are so many parties and things. I think we all know how lousy it is to be accidentally glutened and be super sick at a party where everyone else is fine.

I went to the outback last night and order a cesar salad, the alice springs chicken and the chocolate thunder. I have been sick since last night but I have no idea why. I was very careful to explain my celiac and they seemed really nice about it. Has this happened to anyone else?

I think I need to move to NYC.. I would be in heaven. dont get me wrong..Outback and Carrabas are good.. but there is only sooo many times you can go there before you dont wanna anymore
My husband loves the outback but we haven't been since I was diagnosed around 2 months ago. What is on the gluten free menu?

did you go to dos caminos? what were you able to order???
I did go to Dos Caminos. The food was great. I had seafood ceviche and tuna crusted with avocado and iced cream for dessert. The waitress was extremely understanding and friendly and I had no problem at all. Sorry for the late reply, I was away this weekend and had jury duty all day.
