  1. I had done a search in these forums a while back and found info stating that charcoal contained wheat and we have been avoiding it. However, in anticipation of an upcoming camp out, I e-mailed Kingsford about their Match Lite product. They responded that the product is made from waste wood with corn starch as the binging agent and is gluten free. I guess this is a new formulation fro them?

Anyway, there are still tons of cross cantamination issues at a camp area, but I wanted to pass along the info for anyone that has a charcoal grill at home.

Yes, the last time I wrote to them(a couple years ago) they said they used wheat and corn in the briquettes. They also claimed that any wheat in them would burn up and not effect the food. However, my stomach troubles after eating told me differently. I went and bought a gas grill and haven't looked back since. I don't trust people who say dumb things like that. I am not sure I would even trust them saying it is a new formulation! ha But that's just me ;) Good luck with your camp out.

  2. I am excited that it is FINALLY out. I can't wait to get to town and pick up a copy to read!!

I can't believe people are e-mailing Dana to complain about the article, it's not like SHE wrote it and chose the contents....geesh....any exposure is GOOD exposure!!

  3. Mrs. Leepers has an easy gluten free beef strogonoff mix.

I have found it in Smith's grocery stores (in the organic and health foods aisle) and Whole Foods.

    BB

Mrs. Leepers is GOOD!! Reminds me of the old "hamburger helper" days of the past! ha It's good for those quick and easy meals. It also re-heats and freezes well (leftovers).

  4. Hi all,

I'm looking for insight. My daughter developed a purple tint to both knees and both elbows and what looked like spider bites that itched like mad. We thought they were spider bites. Over a month, the rash became more intense, spreading down arms and legs and across hips on both sides, the longer she has it the faster it spreads (slow at first, then quickly). She describes the itching as being "under her skin, like it was in her bones" rather than related to the actual sores, and it is worse in areas where she hasn't yet developed sores.. We went to Dr. every other day the last week to try to get relief, she actually raked the skin off of her lower leg! Finally 2 spots were biopsied and we are waiting for results. In the meantime, she began glutton free diet. Within a few days, spread of rash seemed to slow a little bit and itching seamed a little less intense. Is this possible?? Interesting, her brother has Ulcerative Colitis, a different autoimmune intestinal condition.

Like the last poster, she is allergic to Sulfa. She also just had vaccines (Yellow Fever and Typhoid) in preparation for travel. Can there be a link? Does this sound like DH symptoms?? She is a senior in HS and a little late for juvenile diagnosis.

    Worried...

I don't have DH and really don't know a WHOLE lot of info about it. I just noticed your post that said you hadn't recieved any responses to this thread........I thought I would come and offer my 2cents ;)

The doctor did the right thing by doing the biopsy of her skin. That will help to determine if the rash is indeed DH. If it comes back as DH your daughter needs to follow the gluten free diet. Some people with celiac have dh and others don't. I am one that does not have it.

If your daughter gets a positive diagnosis you should really look into testing your son also. All first degree relatives should be tested.

Good luck with everything, welcome to the board and feel free to post any questions that you may have!!

  5. Jess, scope was 2 weeks ago down my mouth. Can see diverticular of the bowel in the same test. would have to come up the rear for that one. I was diagnosed by CT Scan

Oh you only had upper........I had upper and lower the same day. Anyways.......might be worth a shot to call your doctor. He can do a physical exam ( pushing on your tummy and asking some questions) to see if he/she thinks you might be having some issues with diverticulitis. Good luck!!

    -Jessica

  6. so there is only a physical exam, surely bloodwork would not pinpoint anything. I have bloodwork done 3 time in 7 months and in all 3 my white and red cells were fine. just just tells them that there is no infection in my body in nothing to worry about. I dont think it will detect the inflamation

Right, CBC would show elevated white cell count (infection). However, if your counts are normal there is no reason that a scope couldn't be done. However, if your counts are normal, most likely this isn't the cause of your pain. The pain usually comes from the infection. Therefore you really most likely don't need the scope. How long ago was your scope/biopsies for celiac? They should have been able to see some things then. Did they mention anything then about your pockets being inflamed or irritated?

    -Jessica

  7. What you said about a cbc and a physical exam to pinpoint the pain is very interesting. Thats exactly what i want. I know where my constant pain is (just under the top left rib). I just need to know where the diverticular are. This is what i could not get out of the doctors. Is there any way other than camera to tell where the pain is coming from?

If what you have is diverticulitis....then you would not want to have a scope done until you are healed. The scope can puncture those tender/infected pouches and create an even larger problem. My dad had to be hospitalized last summer with this and they refused to do the scopes until he was completely healed. They didn't want to risk it.

    -Jessica

  8. Yeah 7mm, i got over the fact that it wasnt that big but you made me a little more concious of it. have u ever heared of diverticular being inflammed for a long period of time. I wander if it could be my diverticular playing up instead of celiac disease being the problem. Did you find being on a celiac diet better for your diverticular? I sure that diverticular pain cannot last for 8 months.

How old were you when you got diagnosed with diverticular disease? Does it not scare you when they tell you, you have the intestines of a 80 year old? Ever mentioned surgery to you?

If you are not careful (eating foods that aren't good for the colon, things that can get caught in the pockets) then YES it could be inflamed for a long time. Possibly infected if it goes on long enough.

I have put myself on a almost liquid diet for the last 20 days. Eating only soft foods, liquid foods etc. This is supposed to help heal the area because it isn't having to work hard and get all the fiberous materials out. Then once it is healed (and ONLY once healed) I will go back to fiber and taking some fiber supplement to insure I don't get this infection again.

I never knew I had diverticulitis until I had the scopes and biopsies for celiac. So diagnosed with both in 2002.

I didn't really think too much about "having the intestines of an 80 year old" because I was still souped up on the valium from the scopes when they told me that!! All I can do now is just be conscious of what I am putting into my body as to not make it WORSE (bigger/more pockets).

Diverticulitis is painful. VERY painful. With mine this time I had severe back pain and pain in the front....it was terribly uncomefortable to sit, stand, lay...anything. I also had nausea, vomiting, exhausted, high fever (for me), high white count. Lots of "fun" things :)

Have you seen the doctor? They could run a cbc (blood work) and he could do a physical exam to see if the pain is in the right place to be diverticulitis?

    -Jessica

  9. Hi Jess, u made my blush. Thanks for your reply. On looking at your topics i came across this one. Believe it or not i too have diverticular disease. Although not diverticulitis, and hopefully never get to that stage. My diverticuar are in the transverse colon, The bit between the acending and decending. This was my first diagnosis for the problems im having now. I went back to them and told them that the pain i was having was not the same as i have read about. thats when the started doing tests for celiac disease.

Anyway, i have approx 30 pockets and the largest one approx 7mm dia. I was put on a hight fibre diet then but told to stop eating as much fibre when thought i had celiac. Am confused more than ever now.

Just wanted to let you know that u are not the only one.

    All the best

    Jay

    Jay-

WOW....7mm would be pretty large of a pocket!! You sure need to be careful. I don't think they counted my pockets when they did my scopes. However, I DO have pictures of them! ha Add THOSE to the photo album  "and here is a picture of my colon" When I had my scopes they told me I have the intestines of an 80 year old!! :P

Right now I am not allowed much fiber until this bout with diverticulitis heals. I have two more days of the 2nd round of double antibiotics (ya, that's 20 days of 4 different kinds of meds). However, it seems to be doing much better. I am not in near as much pain as I was 20 days ago :)

It's good to know that I am not alone in my "old people's disease" (at our age!) ha

    -Jessica

  10. Jay-

Just had to say that you are a VERY handsome guy  My age, handsome, however too far away! ha

Ok....now on to the "important" stuff ;)

You were right on when you said that we would say "just try the diet". It really isn't going to hurt anything to TRY it. If you feel better then you have your answer, and easy fix to your health problems. You don't have to buy expensive medicine!!

As far as traveling and things....there are ways to deal with that. Is celiac inconvenient?? YES!! However, it's sure alot better than being terribly sick!! I can deal with the inconvenience for the sake of my health.

It's normal to try to analyze your situation. You want to find an answer.......nothing wrong with that.

    -Jessica

  11. The cost of the visit?

    FOUR HUNDRED DOLLARS.

    :o:angry::angry::angry:

I think that vet is outrageous, but we couldn't get into our other vet today. HARRUMPH!!!!

So, now we just wait and watch......she does seem better than last night. It was rather difficult loading a 70-pound dog into the car, with little use of her back legs!

THANK YOU ALL so much for your concern and support. This place is SO awesome. :) Esp. Sandy - - pm coming your way. ;)

    xoxo

Milo thinks that Stinker is a VERY pricey dingo! ha However, he also says that I would do the same for him. Cause they are our "babies".

Hope the antibiotics do the trick!! Get some rest and take care of your pooch.

    -Jessica

  12. It shows up on mine also, right above where I am typing now. Goes across the top and says Insert special item, fonts, sizes, A then the abc check, a couple of blue arrows and some other arrows. Then there is a second line with bold, italics, underline, the smilies and a few other things.

I haven't clicked on it either.......guess somebody will just have to get bold! :P OK so I got bold...it comes up with a box and says iespell is not detected....click OK to go to download page.

    -Jessica

  13. chebe is different - some people love it and some hate it. It is very chewy/doughy (if you make the balls/rolls. I made pizza crust with it and it was pretty good - thicker and chewier than I'm used to in "normal" pizza crust, but my non-celiac husband ate it and said it was good. My 2 yr. old wouldn't touch it though, but she's pretty picky :)

If you like "bready" things then you will probably like these. I do.

The first time I made chebe, I made the rolls. I thought it was the NASTIEST thing I had ever tasted. They were gummy and had a metallic taste. BLEH!!! However, they came out with the pizza crust mix, and I was given one to try. I figured I wasn't out anything so I gave it a whirl.

OMG..........it was the BEST pizza crust I had ever had. My family (who is not gluten-free) will ONLY eat this crust now. They don't do regular crusts anymore. I guess the moral of my story is, try it another way. Don't eat the doughballs. Make it into pizza or breadsticks topped with cheese.

    -Jessica

  14. Great question Jessica. I read the article in the wee morning hours when I couldn't sleep last week and missed the "gluten free" in the question. Either way her suggestions are sound tempting. Did anyone else think it would have been even better if she had mentioned the many gluten-free pastas available to accompany such a meal.

I would have a hard time choosing between the salad with seared scallops or the pancetta wrapped shrimp. Have you tried her either of her suggestions?

    Carol

Nope.......haven't tried them yet. Haven't had the time! ha

  15. A friend of mine has a lake cabin in Wisconsin. They visit Granma Ferdon's in Hayward, WI regularily for their multiple allergy son. She brought me back a huge treat... crunchy CHOW MEIN NOODLES. Honestly, they taste like the real thing! I will be placing another mail order soon. I have not tried any of their other products, but will be ordering the pasta shells. Their prices are very reasonable too! I'm very excited. Let me know if you try them.

Here is the website... Open Original Shared Link

I used to LOVE chow mein noodles!! I would love to have some, however I have hard shipping from them is OUTRAGEOUS!?!! Is this also true of things like the chow mein noodles? Anybody know? You have to create an account to figure any costs and I don't want an account if I don't order.

    -Jessica

  16. Just got off the phone with sonic........having an icecream craving and it will be my only opportunity on the way to my parents.....anyways......soft serve icecream is gluten-free (didn't ask about toppings) and all of their drinks and add ins's are gluten-free.......have to have my sonic drinks for summer!! However, I wanted to re-verify the status. Just thought I'd share!! Enjoy!

    -Jessica

  17. This is UNBELIEVABLE:

I went for my intense swim this morning at the Y. Going into the building I saw a woman getting out of her car, and she was wearing the dreaded S & S...striped socks pulled right up almost to her knees and brown Birk knock-offs, I believe. I found this funny as heck as this thread popped right to mind. But wait....she gets out of her car and approaches the doors. She has a MULLET. No question, a grey 'do, short at the front and suddenly long behind her ears. I am now laughing, which is not good as I do not know her and this could be rude...

Get into the pool...and in she comes...

    wearing a bathing cap. :blink::o

How can one individual personify everything we've discussed so far?! It's incredible. Perhaps she was placed in my life today for a reason...it's kind of scary...

Gosh you should have said HI if you saw me at the pool........gosh how rude!!

Just kidding!! I am sitting here laughing and had to find something smarta$$ to say :)

    -Jessica

  18. My understanding is that Hershey will not hide gluten. It will be clearly disclosed in the ingredient list using one of the words: wheat, rye, barley, or oat. If none of these words appear in the ingredient list, enjoy! I don't eat many sweets, and haven't had a Cherry Blossom in about 20 years, but I do recall enjoying them when I was young.

Ahhhh a Canadian fella.......!!!! I am happy to hear that. I wasn't sure of the Canadian policy from Hersheys. So are these Cherry Blossoms good? They sure SMELL good!

    Thanks for the quick response!

    -Jessica
