I was diagnosed in December 1980, and have been on a very strict gluten-free diet since. I was seriously ill, was hospitaised, and almost died. At its worst, I described the pain as being eaten from the inside by malevolent rats. I would literally starve rather than eat a slice of non gluten-free bread.
