  1. anyone think it is just overcompensating for what you can't have? It's not normal to have such cravings. Not saying I don't love chocolate, but I realize there's a cutoff point or I will gain a ton of weight(But- When I was first diagnosed I was an overcompensator too!) Thats why I don't like some of the posts on here, when you get this many people together, eventually, a lot of them will have certain things in common that are possibly totally unrelated to celiac, i.e. cravings.

  2. Please do any Celiacs following after you a favor and call back and talk to the manager. If it had been a peanut allergy they were serving instead of a gluten intolerence, someone could be dead. The manager needs to know that someone didn't follow protocol, especially since Outback is known as a Celiac friendly place!

Hope you feel better soon. It really is a miserable feeling. I describe it to non-Celiacs as a case of non-viral stomach flu.

you said you had a caesar salad, did you do your part and say it must be mixed in a separate bowl and really get the point through you were ordering from the gluten free menu? You have to do that or you may as well eat a loaf of bread. I'm sorry you had a bad reaction.

  3. Have any of you tried the Kinnikinnik pizza crust shells? They're pretty good. They are relatively thick (compared to the other brands) and stay crisp on the outside and soft in the middle. Even though it takes a few more minutes to add my own toppings, it makes for a pretty tasty alternative. Not to mention, I get a pack of 4 crusts for the price of one pre-made pizza ;)

i love them, but only work when it's just me having pizza! But they sort of taste like ellio's pizza if anyone is from the north and knows those!

  4. Lately I have been severely bloated after i eat Baskin Robbins ice cream, or when i eat too much. I get really uncomfortable, followed by these quick little sensations that feel like my heart flips and i get dizzy. It only lasts like 2 seconds and then it will happen again, every 30 minutes or so. It feels like a quick adrenaline rush, then a flip flop of my heart, then dizzy spell, then fine. It only really happens when i feel bloated (ate too much, or the wrong food). Is this my heart or some other cause. It's kind of scary. Any ideas? The bloating is like pressure on sternum and upper abdominal area. It feels like something is pushing on that little cartilidge tip on the bottom of my sternum (xiphoid).

i would go to the doctor!!! This is like when someone talked about biting the inside of their cheek, with millions of celiac, its likely someone else has what you have too, but it doesn't really sound directly related to celiac!

  5. I saw the movie and I thought it was a bunch of propoganda. Yes, there were very sad stories in it. but go anywhere, and you will find hundreds of very sad stories. The same way farenheight 911 had some truth to it, but alot of it was "spun", i thought alot of this was spun. I have relatives in canada who are on waiting lists for surgery, as some people on this board are canadian, they will tell you everything is far from perfect up there. I thought it was very sad but also exaggerated.

  6. i live in tx, but my parents are from LI and went to this today and said it was great. they met the celiac chicks who have that great site about NYC and have tons of good reccomendations for good gluten-free foods bc there were tons of samples, i'm so jealous!

  7. you need to have a sit down with everyone who lives in your house, and post a "rule" sheet on your fridge. if they love you, they'll be more cautious. there is no reason ANYONE in your kitchen should be using real flour, that is something that at home should/can be subbed with gluten-free stuff, theres really no dif. There should be NO pancake mix or cake mix used, thats just inconsiderate of them, it could make you really sick. You do use your own toaster right? you have your own butter etc, labeled seperate in the fridge? They need to take you serious, and if you have an anaphalatic reaction to anything, they need to GET IT OUT of the house, that is rather ridiculous. There should be no soy if you are soooo allergic to it, thats really rude of whoever even asked! TAKE care of YOU first.

  8. I guess it depends how someone says it - it sounds empathetic rather than pity. Someone recognized that its more work to buy food than most people when you have to read labels - be it for gluten or peanuts or soy.

I have had people say almost exactly the same thing to me - I simply respond with the truth - it was hard at first but now it's second nature plus the kids are feeling wonderful now. This can lead to a conversation about celiac which helps spread the word about it ...making more people aware is a good thing, IMHO

actually, i think when anyone makes ANY comment it is a positive, it means they're actually AWARE of it. when people are curious i think it's great and try and answer any questions.

  9. Hi gfp,

    Thanks for your suggestions.

The thing is, we only picked the date at the beginning of this month, so we only have about 4 months time to get everything done, which is why we have invited only family, and why there are only about 20 guests.

We have decided to do a garden party at the in-laws house, with a buffet, but the in-laws are planning to cook more or less everything themselves. We are considering having a few prepared dishes, but it would be stuff like langoustines or other types of meat/seafood. I just don't trust the caterers here to ask for a gluten free cake - as it is, most people don't even know what I'm talking about!

However, I found a website for a baker in London who specializes in wedding cakes, and she will make gluten free cakes as well at no extra charge. The only problem here is the cost: either I can pick the smallest cake, which is 1-tier and serves 50 people for

  10. red hot and blue has many gluten-free things, theres one on collins and 30.also, logans by the northeast mall is great, i always get a plain steak with no seasoning or anything and a baked potato. They also don't use crutons in their normal salad, and as long as you get it without cheese or bacon you're good. and, chipotle on collins!

  11. I do have DH, that is why i have to worry. I also tend to rub my eyes alot so the mascara would get on my hands then i lick my fingers(bad habit). or go eat soemthing and still have the mascara on my hands, so in many cases i would still be digesting the mascara, or lotion or other non eating things.

    paula

ok, that i can understand! I also think when i have kids i will worry about things like these because although i may not drink shampoo, or eat mascara, i've known toddlers who manage to eat almost everything lol.

  12. ok, do all of you who have posted in this topic have DH? because, if not, if you've read anything you would know that gluten cannot affect you unless you ingest it. so, unless you are sucking on your mascara wand, you are ok, however, i know if you have DH it's a different thing. It's in every book on celiac i own, and all over, and sometimes new people get confused by this and think they need to use gluten-free shampoo and stuff. They don't, it's even in the living without magazine , they explained that if you don't have DH it is a big celiac myth.i only say this, because, when i was a new celiac, and came to this board, alot of people are worriers, and alot of things are said without further explanation and are not exactly accurate and confused me, i.e. if you have DH you should worry about this, or even sometimes someone would be talking about something referring to having to be casien free, and i just wanted some clarification on this one.

  13. Okay--- I am from a much more relaxed church where the priest realizes that communion wafers were not made until the modern era and will frequently use bread. For more traditional catholics I would use a gluten-free wafer. As far as trace amounts, you never know. You may little to no damage to your health and barely notice, or you might throw it right up on the priest (I don't recommend that one ;) ). I would see if you can get the gluten-free host, it seems to be the best alternative for you.

a more relaxed church? catholic? You do realize that it doesn't count if it is not an actual host, you may as well be swallowing tic tacs. At least, that's how one angry priest put it. however, it's also pretty stupid to ingest anything with gluten imo (the low gluten host), if you're religious, god knows, he made you this way, but, it also really doesn't "count" at all unless it is made of wheat. I'm sorry if that sounded a bit mean, i'm also catholic, and very conflicted, because as you all must know, it's really annoying having 2/3 of the mass centered around something you can't take part in! How have the rest of you handled this? How do you handle this with your celiac kids? i'm terrified i will have celiac kids and have to go through this with them as well, it's bad enough that we can't really fit in like everyone else, it stinks being excluded in church, right?
