About Me

I was dx’d with Celiacs at age 50 when I had unexplained weight loss. My gastroenterologist gave me a very detailed life medical history form to fill out. After reading it, he said he was pretty sure I have Celiacs disease but wanted to run preliminary tests to rule out other possibilities (did not mention cancer). All tests came back great, and after the endoscopy and colonoscopy, his dx was correct.

I have found the gluten-free diet to be very isolating as I am the only one in my life that has Celiacs. I am flabbergasted at the people in my life who give zero effort at gluten-free food when I’m invited to their house for holidays. My employer couldn’t care less that I can’t join in food parties. I take my own food everywhere I go, and honestly, am weary of the whole thing. One bright spot: my grandchildren (13, 11 and 9 years old) have grown up with the words “gluten-free” on their lips and are ALWAYS reading labels because they WANT me to be able to join in the food fun. My daughter does what she can with her busy schedule.

So it is because of this long isolation and weariness that I am seeking a support group. Thank you for listening!

  1. Thirty-plus years ago I was found to be B-12 deficient (about 20 years prior to being dx’d with Celiacs). I am still deficient, and it causes such fatigue. I read recently that Celiacs typically have difficulty absorbing B-12. Is this true?
