Barb!
Tell your sister to get away from that dr asap! Look for another, if you are close to a big city it would be well worth your families drive to locate someone new. I say "cut the cord" with that doctor!!!

When I first started the probiotics - the pharmacy told me that I could feel worse for a least a week - he told me it was because the good and the bad bacteria would have a bit of a battle - but to stick with it, it would be worth it. I was to take them once in the morning and once at night. The probiotics have really helped me. The kind I take are florajen3 . NO yeast, sugar, soy, eggs, corn, wheat, gluten, coloring, or preservatives. They are to be kept in the refrigerator, and I mix my water with FOS powder, food for the good bacteria to thrive..... I never did have any trouble, but I am told a lot of people do. The pills have helped me!
The pills have acidophilus, bifidum, and longum types of bacteria - I was told the benefits would be like eating at least 10 yogarts at a time.

Beautiful pictures!! Did your paper print your pics? I would have been tembling so much from excitment of seeing the Osprey I would have messed the pictures up. Again, great pictures, and thanks for sharing them!

When I fell sick I was so thristy - it was horrible - I drank and drank all the time - then I would be up all night going to the bathroom - but I was even thirsty at night too! I was tested over and over again for diabetes - but everything was fine there.
Even though I was constantly drinking, I had rough battle with dehydration -- I was in the hospital for that at least 5 times. Just before I was diagnosed with celiac, and the last time I was dehydrated, I got and keep *gerber liquilytes on hand ( it replenished fluids and minerals lost in D and dehydration). It is actually for babies and little kids, but it worked for me!!! I also found drinking propel helped me tremdously as it has some vitamin B in it.
I have not been dehydrated since I stopped eating wheat, nor have I had extreme thirst like I had. I still drink one propel a day, it gives me a bit of energy during the day with the vitamin B.
Just like others have mentioned = watch rinsing away all the vitamins and minerals - I did that several times.

Hey all. Its been a while! HA! Anywho, I was wondering if any of you could tell me some of the names of the ingrediants that are in lotions, shampoos, body washes, etc that have wheat in them. I had a list and lost it. And now Victoria's Secret is having a sale on body products and I want to go nuts but can't remember the names of the ingrediants that are in them to make them unusable by us, good ol' celiac folks. I appreciate any information that you could send my way! Thanks all.
sarah.
vegetable protein or hydro. veg protein is usually gluten too! Wheat germ oil, extract, and starch sometimes are listed too. I am thinking "spent grain" might be wheat gluten too.

Ok I have been seeing people talk about detoxing for the gluten please help me to understand what everybody is talking about. I usually look here while at work and really don't have much time to read and process what is being said, I don't have a computer at home to take the time. So please let me know what am I expecting to feel from eliminating gluten from my diet.
donna
Hi Donna -
Everyone is different, so you may feel what others do, or you may not. I was SOOOOO bad off!! It does take a bit of time - ( it took me weeks to notice any change) some even say then after 4 to 6 weeks you have a reccurence - and even some more allergies show up. Some people never experience any problems at all - even though the gluten is doing major harm.
Bloating
gas
bubbly, foggy, cloudy bm's
I felt extremely hungry - which before I did not even want to eat.
I was tired all the time -
major brain fog -
headaches -
body aches-
But, I now drink a detox tea - love it - I drink it once a day - has helped my get over a lot of my brain fog issues - even if I accidentally get glutened. I take great vitamin supplements, and drink a vitamin protein drink - once a day pro-biotic - I also elimminated all lotions, soaps, make-up and shampoos that had gluten in them too - and feel so much better - People see me now and can't get over I was the same person they saw months ago - I seriously looked like walking death.
I will send some good thoughts your way - stick with it - you will feel better in the long run!

I wouldn't say the patches are a symptom of celiac disease per se.
Vitiligo is an autoimmune disease (as is celiac disease)
If you have one autoimmune disease you are more likely to get another (they like to run in packs!!!)
My son has celiac disease + vitiligo
My husband has celiac disease + rheumatoid arthritis.
Sometimes the more I read - see -know- the more scared I become....
-
Will be saying prayers for you and your family. Please keep us posted how your dad is doing.
God-Bless you during this trying time.

Thought I would post a couple of different kinds of sores that celiacs and people with food allergies are prone too -
APTHOUS ULCERS and ANGULAR CHEILOSIS
I would get the the apthous with my celiac - and my daughter gets the angular cheilosis - with her thyroid
Thankfully I have not had any for awhile - but I am taking the pro-biotics, which includes good bacteria, and not eating gluten anymore!
CANKER SORES (apthous ulcers)
These are painful, grayish-white open sores, of varying size, found inside the mouth on the cheek, tongue, gums, roof of the mouth, or the inside lip. The exact cause is not well understood, but it may result from an abnormal immune system response. Emotional stress, fatigue, spicy or acidic foods, scratches from dentures or brushing, poor oral hygiene, and food allergies definitely influence and trigger these sores.
Options for symptomatic relief:
A. Two non-prescription products that have worked well for my patients are Zilactin-B gel, and Kank-a liquid. Dry the
sore by gently blotting, then apply your choice of medication with a cotton-tipped applicator until the sore turns
white and is less sensitive. It only takes about 10 seconds. Reapply if pain returns.
B. Rinse or apply a carbamide peroxide medication (such as Gly-oxide, Amosan, or Cankaid) to the sore.
C. Apply non-prescription canker sore medications that usually contain benzocaine, menthol, camphor, eucalyptol
and/or alcohol. Note: This is not recommended if you are in homeopathic treatment!!
D. Apply a wet, black tea bag to the sore. It contains tannin, an astringent. A non-prescription product that contains
tannin which can be applied is Tanac.
E. Rinse with a solution of 1 tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide in a glass of water.
F. Rinse with Folamint mouthwash. Note: This is not recommended if you are in homeopathic treatment!!
G. Rinse with Mylanta or milk of magnesia.
H. Rinse with a strong tea of goldenseal root.
I. Squeeze vitamin E oil onto the sore, and repeat several days.
J. Touch the sore with a styptic pencil.
K. Rinse with a mild solution of baking soda and water.
L. At the onset of a sore, take a high dosage of vitamin B-complex.
M. Allow a 50 mg zinc lozenge to dissolve directly on the sore 3xday.
N. Rinse with a solution of Lactobacillus acidophilus 3xday (dissolve 10 capsules in water)
O. Gargle with a deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) solution 4xday (200 mg of DGL mixed in a glass of water)
Options for prevention or lessened frequency:
A. Supplements have helped. One is L-lysine, which is an amino acid, in which a 600 mg tablet is taken 1-3 times a day.
The other is Lactobacillus acidophilus, a natural intestinal bacteria, in which 1 capsule is taken 3 times a day. These
are non-prescription supplements which must be taken continuously to be effective, much like vitamins. Try one or
the other, not both simultaneously. The ideal dosage is determined through trial and error, so if necessary, increase
the dosage until effective, or decrease an effective dosage until symptoms reappear to determine the minimum
effective dosage. Instead of a capsule, you could eat 4 tablespoons of unflavored yogurt each day that contains the
active cultures of Lactobacillus acidophilus.
B. Avoid foods that seem to trigger the sores. Common food triggers are coffee, spices, citrus fruit, nuts high in arginine
(especially walnuts), chocolate, strawberries, rye bread or rye crackers, and acid juices such as orange, tomato, grapefruit,
pineapple, and Snappy Tom.
C. Have a body chemistry that is balanced in minerals, acidity, and alkalinity.
D. Constitutional classical homeopathy
E. Check out if you have conditions that are conducive to canker sores, such as low phosphorus level in saliva, low amount of
stomach acid, and low thyroid activity.
F. Chinese medicine (acupuncture, acupressure, and tui na).
G. Check for food allergies, especially to gluten.
H. Check for a nutritional deficiency in iron, folate, vitamin B12, or zinc. If deficient, in addition to normal daily supplements, take
50 mg of zinc daily (don't if dissolving zinc lozenges directly on sore), take 1000 mg of vitamin C with bioflavonoids daily
(3xday for the first 3 days), take 1000 mg of vitamin B12 under the tongue, take 60 mg of iron daily (only if your are iron
deficient), take 800 mcg of folic acid daily, and take 400 IU of vitamin E daily.
I. Eliminate stress in your life or use relaxation therapies.
J. Sodium lauryl sulfate, a common ingredient in toothpaste, can induce apthous ulcers. Try a toothpaste that does not contain it.
SORES AT THE CORNER OF THE MOUTH (angular cheilosis)
This is usually caused from a deficiency of vitamin B (riboflavin), but it can also be caused by saliva collecting at the corners of the mouth.
For prevention or lessened frequency: Have a good diet that contains riboflavin, plus take a vitamin B-complex supplement. Good food sources of riboflavin are liver, kidney, heart, poultry, fish, green leafed vegetables, nuts, fruit, legumes, dairy products, eggs, and whole grains.

I was diagnosed on 4/25/07 and am doing reasonably well but I so miss the quick-type meals such as a PB&J sandwich or even Spam sandwich. I never really have considered myself a bread eater but I do miss what you might call using bread as a vehicle for other things. Tomato vines in back yard are loaded and the thought of not having a fresh BLT bothers me. I know I can eat everything separately and do look forward to that. Does anyone have a suggestion about a gluten free sliced bread to buy, to make or something else I can use which will hold either peanut butter, spam or tomatoes. Thanks for any help. I am new at this forum and am not sure I am doing this correctly or whether I can get back to it but will try. Geeze
I can't do any kind of gluten-free bread very well - yeast bothers me way to much
But I miss sandwiches too - I recently switched to romain lettuce - even grew my own - as a wrap for my sandwiches. Great for tuna, grilled hamburgs, even had a gluten-free hotdog rolled up in the lettuce with mustard, was better than bread any day.
I like to eat almond butter ( better for you than peanut butter) on Mary's gone crackers. Very good, and good for you.
Also - I make gluten-free pancakes - Pamela's - I put jelly on them, kinda gives me a jelly filled donut fix - only better!!! I make up the whole package - freeze them in 3's in zip-locks, so I can have then anytime - my little girl loves to pop them in the microwave and eat them anytime she wants.

I dred to go shopping for food! and so does my wife! Any Idea's of your own food shopping list to share with me and other's that are gluten free with out the extra cost!
THe fresh veg and fruits are the best, especially if you get the organic.
Get some instant potato flakes that are gluten-free - You can use this instead of breading on your meats. I was making plain fish, or chicken...and my husband wanted a bit more. So you can dip them in an egg wash, or even water for that matter - then the potato flakes...sometimes I double dip egg, then flakes, egg, then flakes again, really good.
I still prefer plain fish but it works for those in the house that have given up gluten for you
) Keeps them happy too!
I also like the Thai soups, and noodles - they are clearly marked gluten-free - not all are so make sure you read the lables.
Also, if you have a cell phone, carry it with you to the store...you can call the 800 number if you are not sure, it may help. It takes a while, but it is better to be safe and check all the label!
I got a gluten-free list of food from the celiac meeting that I just attended, but I haven't had a chance to upload it. Perhaps in the next few days I will get a chance to do that to be able to send it out in an email attachment.
Our Martin's (some places known as - Giant) Grocery store has a machine that has gluten-free receipes - all you have to do is pick one and it will print out for you.
Almond butter is better for you than peanut butter - Almond butter is higher in Omega 3's!! ( more expensive though)
Peanut butter has omega 6's - to high omega 6 gets you unbalenced! Omega 6 is not that healthy - it is actually bad.
Good-Luck...be paitent, it will get easier with time.

I've been gluten-free for almost a week . I think I feel a little better and my stomach went down but as soon as I take 2 bites of anything I bloat again and still can't get rid of the belching and gas. Should this be improving by now or Is it still too soon?
This happened to me when I first went gluten-free....someone on here told me to be careful of cross-contaimination. AND also, things you might not think of - cutting boards - will hold gluten - toasters, mayonaise, jelly, peanut butter, teflon pans, wooden spoons, plastic spatulas, etc....check these things out. Even certain medications contain gluten.
Keep a watch out for these things

Please, please, please use great caution with a 'cleanse'. These are not something that we normally benefit from and can be extremely dangerous for those of us with celiac. There are some of us who have been made extremely ill by these and they really have no benefit other than money for the companies that make them. Your body has ways of cleansing itself and you risk upsetting the natural flora and fauna of your digestive tract among other things.
I agree with ravenwoodglass!! Be very careful with this cleanse. I am wondering if pro-bitotics would benefit you much, much more. I take those, with the fos powder ( that feeds the good bacteria!) . My side pains have gone away....PLEASE be extra careful!!
-
I substitute a lot of my oil with applesauce to bake with. I did it before I knew I was celiac. My kids always said the cakes were more moist - we called it our secret ingredient.

Hi everyone! I need a gluten-free mosturizer for my face, that provides SPF protection and does sunless tanning. Olay won't give me a straight answer on thier "touch of Sun" products, Neutrogena's product is for the body, way to harsh for my face. Clinique is still testing theirs and Estee Lauder is also.
anyone have any more suggestions?
A product by malibu - Hemp Golden Glow. I talked to the chemist there and he assured me that it was gluten-free. You can get it at walmat. I can't use products that change my skin, it seems to give me a funny taste in my mouth. ( I am NOT tasting it, just sometimes when I have different lotions on I get a metal taste in my mouth) But this product seems to work well, my daughter has used it for a couple of weeks. It doesn't have spf though, sorry. I think you will find most don't. I use not-so-basic skin care by *ar-bonne, gluten-free - it is wonderful, but it does not change the skin color. They do have a self-tanner, but that is NOT gluten-free - so I don't recommend that.
Hope this helps

Hi There!
My 4 yr old daughter was just diagnosed with Celiac via blood tests and biopsy about 1 month ago. I have been "lurking" on this board since then and have gained so much knowledge from all of you. But now I am stuck and finally have to post...
can someone tell me what ingredient to look for in toothpaste to see if it is gluten-free??
what kids toothpastes are gluten-free?
Thanks in advance for your help, I am not sure where I would be if I hadn't of stumbled upon this board.
I am using crest also. Recently I asked the colgate makers about gluten, and they can not be certain they are gluten-free
One of my children uses Tom's - it is organic, and it doesn't have flouride. Flouride seems to bothers her thyroid

When I first found I had celiac disease = I was getting cross contamination from just about everything in the refridg, then I bought myself all my own condiments and put a big fat G*F on them (for gluten free). That way if there was any gluten in the other condiments I didn't get it. Now the family shares the same ones - we have a gluten-free house with food. If they want anything with gluten they get to eat out for a night.

I take B Complex vitamins as suggested by my doctor. I've only been gluten free for about four months, so I'm still adjusting. I took a look at my bottle of vitamins and it says they contain wheat!
Do you guys know of any good B Complex vitamin out there that is gluten free?
Thank you!!!
I take a muti-vitamin group which incorporates all the essential vitamins and minerals. It has all the B complex vitamins. There are 6 morning and 6 night vitiamins that I take everyday in this group. I love them, they have given me more energy in just a few weeks then I have had over the last few months. I am also sleeping better than I have over the last 2 years. The vitamins are also gender specific, so men have their own, and women have their own. ( Of course they are gluten free! )
There is a Super Food Antioxident blend that has a ORAC value of 8,000 units per day!

Okay, I have asked this question probably too many times before, but I have had a new experience with it. I developed what looked like the beginning of chicken pox (only smaller) on three spots of my leg -- all in close proximity. It was after I accidentally consumed gluten in generic antibiotics I was given. They itched like CRAZY -- because they started "popping", I covered them with a Tegaderm dressing to keep the fluid from moving to other areas. Now I'm left with some mild scars (I scar pretty badly anyway). The dermatologist said that it sounded like DH, but would have to biopsy them when they're active. Given that I'm gluten-free, I'm hoping it doesn't happen again! Is this what DH is like, though?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Lynne
I had a scar on my hand from a gluten antibiotic IV - SINCE Dec.
Mine has just gone away since I started watching like a hawk with what I was putting on my skin at all times. I am only using botanically based lotions that are gluten-free.
Watch carefully what you are putting on your skin...anything from hand cream to soap, could be just about anything affecting you that has gluten in it that is geting through your skin. Watch your labels, call the companies - they like to say they don't add any gluten - but then when you ask about the products they get from other companies they add into the product the story changes, they can't be sure, or they say they don't regularly test for gluten. Be safe, check everything and then stay with what works!! ( Mineral oil and petoleum may make you smoother, but it is actually harmful)

I have ulcerative colitis. I tested negative with biopsy and blood test for celiac, yet I had sent in a stool sample to Entrolab and tested positive?? therefore my doctor (not my gastrodoctor) put me on a gluten free diet. Does anyone know if this test is accurate? After going on gluten-free diet for approx 9 months now, my colits problems and allergic reaction problems from foods have disappeared (could be coincidental) but my issue is that I've gone form daily diarrhea to total constipation! Does the gluten-free diet cause that problem? If so, what do you suggest to help? My gastro doctor wants me to take Miralax?? I'm worried what it may do to me! Thank you for any help or suggestions.
Trudy
SO glad that your allergic reaction problems from foods have disappeared!
Miralax is gluten free. You might try it, maybe once a day or even every other day to see what works for you. If I have had to take it, I have mixed it with juice, but you can mix it with water if you want. (the nurses at the hospital have all said mix it with warm prune juice, can't handle that taste)
-
YOU GUYS ARE MAKING ME HUNGRY!!!! LOL. Awesome suggestions all. And stuff I had forgotten about too!! I had pizza hut pizza today (yum) and an onion bagel with cream cheese. And an ice cream in a cone - do they even MAKE gluten-free cones? I'm thinking not, so I'm eating as many cones between now and then as possible, lol.
Yes, there is such a thing as GLUTEN Free cones - I have seen two different brand name versions, but very, very pricey - but worth it if you really want it. I have never tried them, so I don't know what they taste like.
-
what can i do about it? got glutened, and my head is just floating somewhere. it's so annoying! feel like i can't focus on anything!!!
I feel for you sooooo bad, I used to get it for a whole week. I get a super headache the next day if I drink a lot of caffeine. I drink lots of water, and a special detox tea, an extra vitamin, and I throw a nap in there too. I hope you start feeling better soon!

In 5 days I go for my biopsy. My blood tests already showed positive for celiac so as soon as I have the biopsy I am going gluten free (not waiting on results). I do NOT plan on ever cheating, so I would like to get in all my fav's before the 5 days are up. If you had 5 days to eat anything, what would you eat? What is just NOT the same once you go gluten free? Looking for fun ideas
I'm gonna be so sick to my stomach, but I don't care, lol - I'll make up for it by never cheating on the gluten free, hehe. So fire away! What's teh one thing you miss the most? You can live vicariously through me!
Papa John's pizza - A big fat jelly donut w/a cuppicinno - or a chocolate gob - or a loaf of just baked french bread, half w/bruschetta, and half w/butter - or maybe one piece of kfc original receipe - good blue cheese salad dressing on lettuce hearts w/walnuts
However - as sick as I was and still am, I would never knowingly eat wheat ever, ever again
