  1. I was doing some research today and I came across this Kraft gluten-free and lactose free product list. I thought it was great so I thought I'd share it with you guys!

  2. burdee,

Thanks for your input. My GI doctor thought that after 4 months on the gluten free diet that I should be feeling better but I wasn't really feeling any better at all. I was still very sick. It was very dissapointing to try so hard on a gluten-free diet and see hardly any results. I thought I was doing something wrong.

Maybe my intestines needed more time to heal? I don't know. I know there was damage to my intestines because I had a postive biopsy. But maybe the damage was quite extensive and my intestines just need a longer healing time.

It seems like a lot of people on this board are still very sick after months of being gluten free so maybe certain people need a longer time to heal before they feel better.

I am still not 100% but I feel much better on the medication. The medication seems to control "things" to a certain degree. It makes life a lot easier.

I can't tolerate any dairy even with lactaid, so maybe I am casein intolerant. I refuse to go near any dairy products because of the reactions I get.

  3. I used to think that practically everything I ate was contaminated with gluten because I was getting reactions to almost everything I ate. After 4 months into the gluten-free diet I wasn't getting much better.

My GI doctor said that everything I ate could not be contaminated with gluten.

Turns out I have both Celiac Diease and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) (I am also lactose intolerant). My GI doctor told me that the celiac disease probably brought on the IBS.

I am now on a medication (Modulon) for IBS and am feeling a lot better and I don't get sick all the time.

    Hope this helps!

  4. At home I do a lot of things to prevent cross-contamination from gluten. I am very sensitive so I have to be extra careful. Here are some things that I do at home to avoid cross contamination.

    1. Wipe down counter tops well before preparing food.

    2. Check "clean" utensils, plates, and cookware for crumbs before using and wash again if necessary.

    3. Buy new cookware if old cookware if scratched. If old cookware must be used just be very careful.

    4. Use a separate toaster/toaster oven

    5. Use separate deep fryer

    6. Use separate butter/peanut butter/jam and label as Gluten-free if people can't remember.

    7. Be careful when using the BBQ

    Hope this helps! :)

  5. If a celiac pill came out I would probably only use it to avoid cross-contamination when eating out or when eating at other people's houses. I don't know if I would trust it to use all the time. In order to convince me to use it all the time, I'd have to see good scientific results and scientific studies that prove that it works and does not allow any intestinal damage.

I would pay up to 75/year to use only when eating out, which would be about 2-3x a month if I had the pill.

  6. I have sleep problems but I think it might be because of the medication my GI doctor has me on to help prevent my permenant diarrhea.

I almost always feel like I took a handful of those non-drowsy over-the-counter medications that you can get for sinus problems, flu, colds......

I am so wide a wake at night I find it very hard to get a good nights sleep  .

  7. What are your 3 favourite desserts? :D

    blueberry pie

    cheesecake

    strawberry creps

What are your 3 least favourite desserts?

    pumpkin pie

    heavy chocolate desserts

    rice pudding

How many other people do you live with?

    1

How many other people do you most regularly eat with?

anywhere from 0-4 depending on the day

    What meals do you prefer?

    Home cooking

How much do you feel is a reasonable price to pay (per portion) for a dessert?

I'm from Canada so I guess around 4-5$ American.

  8. I think that this is a very good question.

I react to the smallest traces of gluten and I will be sick for at least a day.

My concern is also about cross contamination for example,

Some flavors of lays chips are gluten free but there is a risk of cross contamination. If I eat the gluten free lays chips I get sick from the cross contamination, but if someone else with celiac disease also eats the same chips and doesn't get a reaction does that mean that they get damage to the intestines even though they didn't get a reaction?

    So the question is,

If some celiacs are reacting to the "gluten free" lays chips does that mean that every celiac that eats them is getting intestinal damage by eating them?

  9. Karen, I have celiac disease and I am also dairy intolerant. After 4 months of being on the gluten free diet I was still having "permenant " diarrhea. Nothing seemed to want to stay in my system for a long period of time. Sometimes the food I ate was almost instantly out. It was awful.

I was weak, tired, annoyed, underweight, and very frustrated.

I went back to my GI specialist and he said I should be 100% dairy free and 100%gluten free of coarse. Then he suggested that I may also have IBS (Irritable bowel syndrome) in addition to Celiac Disease. (Oh joy). <_<

He started me on a medication called Modulon and it has worked wonders! I actually had almost a week of no diarrhea!

I have learned the hard way that the drug doesn't work well if you have a gluten accident.

But as long as there was no gluten in me I was fine and felt wonderful, better that I had in months!

    Just thought you'd be interested

  10. I get sick after I walk through fields containing grains that celiacs cannot have. I must injest/inhale some of the plant or something without noticing. Once I was so sick I could barely stand up. I have to walk though these fields once in a while for my work. (I can't exactley hold my breath beacuse I have to walk quite a distance and the plants are sometimes taller or the same size as me).

I was just wondering if anyone else has reacted to walking thorugh wheat/oats/barely/rye fields and what you do to avoid getting sick?

  11. Hey, I am 23 years old and from Canada. I was diagnosed this past winter (2004) with a combined biopsy and blood test. I have been on the gluten free diet since the day of the biopsy! I am also lactose/dairy intolerant and have also been trying to be on a dairy free diet as well.

  12. I was at Swiss Chalet the other day and they had a celiac, gluten free menu! I actually got to keep the menu! It was great! :D

Swiss Chalet is the only restaurant that I know that has a gluten-free menu in Canada (Other than the fast food chains like Wendy's, Burger King, and MacDonald's)

Has anyone else been to restaurants in Canada that offer gluten-free menus?

    Thanks! B)

  14. Hi,

I have Celiac Disease and have been on the gluten-free diet since March (That's when I found out).

Yesterday I got really sick and the only thing different I had was lemonade (I know it wasn't anything else I had because I have been eating the other foods with no problem for awhile now). :(

Anyway, I came across this website:

    Open Original Shared Link

and if you scroll down to the lemonade, it says that it has wheat in it..........

I was just wondering if anyone else has had bad reactions to lemonade and does Minute Maid actually have wheat in their lemonade?

I've heard recently that Coke/ Minute Maid no longer says that all their products are gluten free but I have no confirmation on this.... Does anyone know anymore details?

    Thanks :)

    -Carrie
