  1. The popcorn may have contained gluten, and/or it may have been contaminated. Did you put seasonings or extra butter on the popcorn? Where they making any other food that may contain gluten? Also, are you lactose intolerant? Maybe the butter was an issue.

The best thing to do is maybe call and ask the brand of popcorn they use, determine if it's safe, and then evaluate the cross contamination issues where they are serving.

    Hope this helps :)

Tropical Source does state that there chocolates are made on the same lines as other dairy products and although they clean before, traces may still be present.
Did you get this information from the company? I had these chocolates last week and really enjoyed them and would like to be able to eat them and not get sick, but I want to make sure that they are 100% gluten and dairy free. I found this statement on this site:

"These bars and baking chips are manufactured in one of the only chocolate factories in the world that has completely dedicated production equipment that is never used with dairy or gluten ingredients. This sets Tropical Source apart from virtually all other dark and semi-sweet chocolates which are often produced on mixed lines that may contain trace amounts of allergens in the equipment."

and guess what happned to me after my daughter had her appendix out? She could stomach jello and they asked for an easy to digest gluten-free food tray... after offering her regular toast! My daughter had to remind the nurses more than once thats he was celiac... ok, actually I understand that they have a full load of kids to take care of and they can forget diet issues...so the ki9tchen sent up chicken and french fries - not exactly easy to digest! and belss my littel girl - she refused the fries for 2 reasons 1) she wasnt ready to digest that and 2) no one could tell her if they had dedicated fryer!! After that she refused any food unless I okayed it. She was labeled difficult and I was an indulgent mother... HA ... I will accept that label any day if it keeps her "safe" from glutening. I also kept having to remind her she has Aspergers an as such, she is very matter of fact about stating her needs, she doesnt have the social "tact" to be nice about it...
Wow... you would think they would be more understanding and sympathetic.

Keep in mind that how good a country's medical system is is a judgment made based on what questions you are asking. You may look at the US and see that it is possible to get an appointment to see a specialist on relatively short notice. I look all these people who get tested and retested and reretested because their insurance will pay for it. I have no insurance, so I see a doctor only when I'm too sick to work, and then I have to have the cash to pay for it when services are rendered.
I guess both systems have their flaws and benefits. I just don't know much about the US health care system.

ER cant test for allergies, they can treat an allergic reaction..but I do know that labs only do basic stuff after hours. They can do a lot of lab work after hours but not allergey testing.
That's interesting, I knew that even if they did blood allergy testing that my levels would be off becasue of the drugs. So it's probably better that they didn't test. I'm just hoping that things will calm down long enough so I can get allergy testing done.

The waiting times are ridiculous - I agree - but there are good doctors/staff .
Yeah, it's not the doctors or nurses fault at all, I'm sure they would speed up the process if they could. There should be more doctors!
  6. Oh yes, and I would also like to add that when I was in the ER they sent a nurse in with a sandwich and milk to give to me so I could take prednisone! Ah! The doctor knew I had celiac disease and a milk allergy. I don't think that there was much communication between the doctor and that nurse!

Maybe it's best for you to have pure, "clean" foods for awhile, then slowly and one at a time add in "suspect" things. It's so annoying, but better than being ill or having a frightening reaction to something. Good luck with your detective work.
I am eating safe foods that I know have never caused me problems in the past. My diet has been sort of blah, but like you said better safe than sorry. I'm trying to keep everything interesting though. I'm not eating the new foods that I had before the reaction, no way! I am also staying away from everything that may have come in contact with milk since milk is my main suspicion right now.

I'll quickly jump in here...fascinating thread. Lisa, you're Canadian as am I, and we are both in provinces where the health care system is severely flawed, where waiting lists for essential, often life-saving proceedures is months and sometimes over a year long. Sure, in theory Canada has always had one of the best health-care systems in the world, where it is free and everyone has access. But things are a changin', I'm afraid, and at least up here the less-than-adequate care many of us receive from doctors, particularly in the ER, is due to the docs and nurses being completely overworked. They simply do not have the time or energy to give the proper attention needed, because we just don't have the money to hire enough doctors, and doctors are leaving Canada for greener pastures with better work conditions. It's quite alarming, and Lisa, I'm so sorry you are suffering from this political mess. I hope you get your tests soon, and get a rare doctor with time to listen. Sometimes it makes me tempted to move to Europe...
Waiting times in the ER here in Canada can be ridiculous, like 4-6 hours! And once you get in, they treat the problem as best as they can, check a few things, and then send you on your way. When I was in the ER last week, I was told that they can't do allergy testing to tell me what I am for sure reacting to. I was disheartened, all I wanted to know is what was causing my heart problems, breathing problems, the feeling of passing out, and the fact the my throat felt like it would close over. They said that they don't test for allergies in the ER, when I know that they could have done some simple blood tests right then and there. Now I'm waiting to see a specialist, which could take a long time! This frustrates me!

    Carrie,

I have had that "throat closing over" feeling, relieved by Benadryl several times. VERY disconcerting. Allergy testing revealed nothing, but I had two nut flour muffins the last time it happened. Very leery of nuts now. Had testing for tree nuts which came back negative but it was weeks after the reaction. Don't know if this helps. Feel better.

Thanks for your help. I wish that there was an easy way to tell what is causing these reactions.
  10. I was wondering if anyone knew how long allergic reactions can last? I just had a mild reaction tonight and I'm pretty sure that I had no milk, wheat, or yeast. I am on prednisone and once I took Benedryl, I felt better within an hour or so. I am afraid that when my prednisone runs out that I will get worse.

Also, does anyone know if people can get allergic reactions in which the throat feels like it will close over from environmental allergis, like animal hair, dust, pollen, or mold?

    Carrie,

You can get histamine reactions to any allergen or irritant. Anything the immune system sees as "foreign" or "bad" can trigger a release of histmaine.

    OOOPS...

This is a duplicate post.....please see above post. laugh.gif

BTW...I love your new avatar! biggrin.gif

Did you have your wedding yet?

Thanks for your help. I'm getting married on August 19!

Yes, at least this is what I read that it can be from environmental (dust, pollen), chemicals, and foods.

I think I remember your food list the day you had a reaction, lotsof corn chips, salsa, lara bars. For starters the tomato base in the salsa could be problematic, if you are talking about histimine release, also the lara bars with the dried fruit and the nuts.

Thanks. Do you think environmental reactions can cause throat swelling? Or is it just foods that cause that? Sorry for all the questions, but I can't seem to find answers. The corn chips I ate were contaminated with dairy. I will have to watch tomatoes and nuts too.
  13. Thanks for explaining Rachel. I was just hoping that may help. My most recent food allergy test (blood test) only tested positive for milk allergy, but I have tested positive to wheat and yeast allergy on a skin prick test. I just got all my results from the past faxed to me this week from my doctors office. It seems as though I reacted to dairy, but I have to have more testing done to make sure. Do you know if people can get histamine reactions to environmental things like dust, mold, and animal hair?

I dunno how to explain this but this happens maybe 1 or 2 itmes a week, my head gets umm tingly, not all over, but like a band that runs from one ear around the back to the other ear. I think at least, its hard to isolate. I can not figure it out. Dunno what trips it, or stops it or nuting. Be going on for years now...
I got that during an allergic reaction.

Rachel, check out this link for me and let me know what you think, there's a link at the bottom following the article for the low histimine diet this guy/girl followed.

    Low Histimine Diet

That's very interesting. The doctor at the emergency room said that I was having a histamine reaction. Maybe that diet will help?

Rachel, do you ever get throat swelling?
