  1. I am so sorry that you have had to go through so much. The good news is that you can heal but it may take some time. Do go to the Coping section and read the top post as it will have a lot of information that can help you heal and stay safe. The first tests they did were the older tests that have a higher false negative rate than the last tests you had...
  2. I'd rather they give me obviously gluteny gifts than try and do gluten free for me. That can be even more difficult. I think you handled it well by simply giving them to someone who could use them. Perhaps your Mom could talk to close family members about gifting you something non-edible or a premade store bought gluten free goody.
  3. If it is plain rice cooked at home it should be fine.
  4. If you are having symptoms suggestive of MS it could be that the antibodies are attacking your nervous system or that vitamin levels in certain vitamins are low. I was thought to have MS before diagnosis since I had brain lesions suggetive of it. A spinal tap ruled it out when debris suggestive of the demylination of the mylin sheath was not found. it turned...
  5. I had a Quaker Parrot when I was first diagnosed. In my case I found cage cleaning and feeding to be an issue. I wasn't able to find a gluten free food for him and I think the dust from his food got to me more than handling him. I hope you are able to find a gluten free food for him as they are great company. I had to take mine to a shelter but he never even...
  6. Yes it is quite possible. Folks with DH can also tend to be more sensistive to cross contamination. It can take some time for the antibodies to leave the skin so do be as strict as you can. Many also find it helpful to avoid iodine for a bit. After you have healed do add iodine back in as it is an important nutrient. I hope you heal quickly and do ask any...
  7. Canyon Bakehouse has a pretty good gluten-free "rye" bread. No rye in it but it does taste quite like the rye bread I remember. I eat it frequently toasted with gobs of butter. I find it in the frezzer section of my local Wegmans but am sure it is also available elsewhere. Oh and as a bonus if you have issues with soy (I do) it is also soy free.
  8. I can only speak from my own experience of course it may not apply to yourself. I had celiac since childhood and had extremely violent D for about 15 years before I was diagnosed in my 40's. About 2 years before diagnosis I had a colonoscopy done. The doctor said that I had extensive diverticulosis throughout my entire large intestine. To bad he didn't do...
  9. Did any of the symptoms that you normally get with gluten appear at some point? Peoples reactions can change over time but perhaps it was something in the sausage that just didn't agree with your tummy. It is also possible that you had food poisoning but that usually takes some time to develop. Perhaps even a virus. I hope you are feeling better by now.
  10. This is a question you should be asking of the doctor that ordered the tests. You also need to ask if you should have stopped taking supplements and for how long before the blood draw.
  11. Just be sure to ask the doctor how long you need to stop taking them for before the doctor tests your levels. If you have been working with this doctor you may want to call the office and ask if you can just get a lab request before your appointment so the doctor has the results in hand when you get to the office or the virtual appointment.
  12. Ideally you would have gone to the derm and asked for them to biopsy for DH. The biopsy is done to tissue next to an active lesion. You also should have had blood work to check for celiac antibodies before going gluten free. It is good news that the diet has helped with other symptoms but do be aware that if you want a doctor's diagnosis you will need to...
  13. Good. You may be able to add both soy and dairy back in once you heal. I tolerate dairy fully now but soy is still a no go. Cooking can be fun and quite a creative pastime. I hate doing dishes so I have become the 'Tin Foil Queen'. Amazing how much can be wrapped in foil and tossed in a toaster oven.
  14. It may be a good idea to drop that as well. It may not be the case for you but soy binds me up for days. If you can go with as much whole foods as possible it would be a good idea. It is a drag having to cook everything yourself but it is worth it in the long run.
  15. For the C after a gluten D episode something like a stool softener may help. Ask the pharmacist for recommendations of what is for sure gluten free. You also may want to have them note in your file that gluten is a no so they will check for it in any scripts you may need filled.
  16. If you had been gluten free for 7-8 months your tests would be negative. If you feel you can't do a gluten challenge you will just have to go with your bodies diagnosis. That doesn't mean that you may not have something else going on as well. Also liver issues are common with celiac and may resolve on their own. If you don't want to challenge just go with...
  17. Welcome to the club you never wanted to join. it is possible to still get a negative biopsy if your intestinal damage is patchy but with results that high I doubt that will happen. The doctor does have to be looking for celiac but it sounds like your doctor knows what he is doing. Be sure to keep eating gluten daily until the biopsy which hopefully will...
  18. I have been through something similiar to what you are and will tell you what my ped. told me. For now feed him what he will eat. Let him have his fill of fruit etc and when you sit down to eat also give him small amounts of what you are having. Then don't pay attention to what he is eating. Two's aren't known as the 'terrible twos' for nothing. He is at...
  19. Have you tried using a dehydrator? You could do fruit leathers and jerkies and dehydrate veggies etc to eat either dry or rehydrate into stews, sauces or whatever your imagination can think up. I think you would keep more fiber and nutrients but still keep packing space minimized. Plus you would know for sure that everything was safe.
  20. That's a relief! Hope you get the results soon and that things resolve quickly.
  21. Please call your GI doctor ASAP as dark and tarry stools can be a sign of internal bleeding. He/she should get you in very quickly.
  22. Oh that oatmeal sounds so good right now. Be aware though that some celiacs don't tolerate even certified gluten free oats. Newbies should wait until they are healed before adding them into their diet. When I am craving or in need of a hot cereal I go with cream of buckwheat. Not quite the same but still lots of fiber and easily digested protein.
  23. Celiac is an autoimmune disease. The reaction is not just controlled by how long food stays in the gut. It is systemic. Your refusal to take him to a doctor is dangerous. If he had a broken leg would you just put a splint on it and say 'well I know what it is and I fixed it'. What are you going to do when he is a teen and as teens do rebels against your ...
  24. You're not alone. I can't have gluten grain based distilled alcohol either. While many folks with celiac are fine with them there is a small number of us that can't tolerate.
  25. This is a question you should ask your doctor. Likely he can also give advice on which one to take rather than posting queries about many very expensive ones. You could also look into more iron rich foods like liver, as one example. You can do a search for iron rich foods to find others.
