  1. As CL said it is advised to go whole foods at first but we all need a treat now and then and it is easy to make a mistake especially early on. I found Hormel bacon bits recently that are labeled gluten free. The bag ones are great for those that live alone and don't want to spend the cash on uncooked bacon that could go bad before finishing. There...
  2. While I am comfortable using name brand Immodium and trust the company if others are not comfortable then there are brands that do have the gluten-free label. Thanks to the virus I lost my job and I recently purchased a generic from Wegmans, Top Care brand, that does have that gluten-free on the box. Whether they actually test or not who knows. It is very...
  3. I don't know about the liquid but I have taken Immodium caplets for years when needed and never had an issue. I am extremely sensitive to gluten and had no reaction at all. This does not apply to lopermide by all companies so get the name brand when needed. http://www.glutenfreedrugs.com/list.htm Imodium multi symptom chewable-No gluten or any carbohydrates...
  4. Welcome to the board. If at all possible do try and get at least a celiac blood screening done. The reason I say this is because if you do go gluten free and it helps then you decide to test you will need to do a gluten challenge. A challenge after being gluten free for a time can make symptoms even more severe than they were before. As to your B12 levels...
  5. Welcome to the board. With a positive blood test and your GI saying it looks to be celiac you can go ahead and start her on the diet. She may get some relief before you even go back for the results. If you go here you will find a lot of info to keep her safe: In addition all her first degree relatives should be tested even if they have no symptoms....
  6. IMHO the best way to test for other intolerances it to eliminate the item you think you may be reacting to for a couple weeks and then add it back in daily for a week and see if you react. Some allergists will guide you on an elimination diet for other intolerances but they can be hard to find. If you don't have symptoms then I think you likely don't need...
  7. Yes but some fresh watermelon would be better for you. You can pick up mold for frozen treats at most discount stores like Walmart, for example. If you want pops just mush up the watermelon place in forms and freeze. Yummy and no extra sugar.
  8. If you can't get retested, keeping in mind the possibility of a false negative, your best recourse may be to simply give the diet a good strict try for at least a month or two. False negatives on blood tests delayed my diagnosis by many pain filled years. Sometimes the body gives us answers that the tests don't.
  9. Blood and biopsy will be negative if you are gluten free. To get a formal diagnosis you need to go back to eating gluten daily for at least 6 weeks for blood tests and at least 2 weeks minimum for the biopsy. That said if you know gluten makes you ill only you can decide if a challenge for diagnosis is worth the pain.
  10. Thank you for letting us know that you are feeling better. Gluten can take us to some pretty dark places. Good to hear you are coming out of yours. When I get glutened it helps me to keep reminding myself that it is the gluten and soon things will be brighter.
  11. Welcome to the board. The best advice I can give you is to eat as much whole unprocessed food as possible. Meats, fish, veggies, fruit etc. It can take some time to get used to cooking everything yourself but that is safest. If you live with others who eat gluten you need to be careful of cross contamination. For example don't use the same strainer that was...
  12. It could be DH. When DH heals it leaves purplish scars usually. If you are still eating gluten you could see a dermatologist who will biopsy NEXT to an active lesion. It seems that folks with DH are more prone to false negatives on celiac screenings. What celiac blood tests did they do? Have you ever had an endoscopy done?
  13. Me too for over 40 years. I was diagnosed with IBS and kept Immodium in business taking it multiple times a day. My DH was diagnosed as a child as 'poison ivy in my bloodstream' to explain why I had it 12 months of the year and later as 'pickers acne' when it moved to my face, neck and scalp. My ataxia was 'you're just clumsy' as a child and in later years...
  14. Have they tested your B12 levels? If not it would be a good idea to make sure they are above 250. As for the ataxia I had it so severe that I couldn't walk unaided. The diet helped but the assistance of a physical therapist was invaluable. It took some work but I can walk fairly normally now although some balance issues do still remain. However I went undiagnosed...
  15. Welcome to the board Shirley. If your eating has not increased and your activity levels are the same you may want to have the doctor check your thyroid. Thyroid issues are not uncommon for folks with celiac. As an aside before diagnosis I also had diverticulosis (not -isis which is when the diverticuli become inflamed). The GI that did my colonoscopy...
  16. Any food sold in the US must comply with FDA regulations. If a starch is derived from wheat in food it must be labeled.
  17. You have gotten some great advice on this and other posts. I do have one thing to add. You mention in another thread that you are eating lactose free ice cream and cottage cheese. You may want to drop all dairy until you are doing a bit better. There are some good dairy free ice creams (although personally I would avoid soy based for now) as well as sherbets...
  18. If you feel you have a book or a short story that needs to come out and get on paper then write. Just because no one has given you and 'atta boy' doesn't mean it isn't worth writing. You have a decent outline going so just keep it up and flesh it out. Write for yourself first and your readers second and if a pubilsher wants it great but if not that's okay...
  19. If you are not seeing bite marks on your family members you are likely bed bug free. You may want to think about a call to an exterminator for your own peace of mind. As Scott said they can be tough to get rid of and they don't always hang out just in beds.
  20. I baked when first diagnosed since the only bread available was truley awful and still is IMHO. Now there are lots of good choices. I like Canyon Bakehouse Mountain White. They make another but it has oats and I need to avoid those. Grainless Baker makes a baugette (sp?) that is really good for subs or garlic bread. There are alot of other good brands out...
  21. I kept meaning to come back and reply basically this. I have wondered for years why my symptoms resolved with my two pregnacies. I had celiac since childhood but wasn't diagnosed until mylate 40's. Except for morning sickness with my second child I felt better pregnant than not but after each my celiac symptoms including DH came back. Things were really severe...
  22. Welcome to the board. I shop at Wegmans. They have a celiac in the family and I have never had any issues. I did mention once that it was not a good idea to have their breaded fresh items next to other items in the case for specialty meats and the next time I went in they had changed that practice. I have never had an issue with items from the prewrapped...
  23. You mention this pain being associated with certain arm movements. Could you possibly have a nerve that is being pinched? Have they done an x-ray? Perhaps a chiropracter or a physical therapist may be able to help if a nerve is being pinched? I hope this clears up for you soon. In myself a glutening seems to activate any 'weak' spots in my muscles and ligaments...
  24. I find Tiger Balm helps a great deal. A hot shower or bath can also give some relief. If you can take them an anti-inflammatory can also be used.
  25. In addition to the site Scott mentions I find this one to also be helpful: https://pillbox.nlm.nih.gov/pillimage/search.php When checking gluten statis I use the word 'wheat' rather than gluten. Barley and rye are not used in medication that I have ever seen so I don't worry about those. Some folks are also sensitive to corn or dairy and those can...
