  1. I think Trader Joe's is opening a store near us. I've heard it mentioned a lot on this forum so I'm wondering if you can post your favorite things you buy there...Trader Joe's brand or other brand products. I want to be prepared when the store opens! I know there is a gluten-free list of their products on their website, but I'm curious what everyone here likes since all of you are great resources. A friend sent us Trader Joe's brownie mix for DD and it was fabulous. Thanks!!

I love Trader Joe's!!! Mine is about 45 minutes away, so we don't get there very often.

    Here's my list:

    Banana Waffles

    Pancakes

    Basmati Rice

    French Rolls

    Dark Chocolate covered Cherries

    Marinara Sauce

    Tropical Mix Granola

  2. Here's a couple of lunch items that my husband takes: Progresso soups have several wheat/gluten-free choices, which he takes ALOT. He also likes to spread pnut butter on a corn tortilla and wrap that around a banana. He eats alot of yogurt and nut thins (yummy little crackers made from various nut flours that our whole family loves) with pnut butter. He actually keeps the nut thins and a jar of pnut butter in his desk. Another staple that he keeps on hand to have in a pinch is the Nature Valley pnut or almond bars (these are the only two to my knowledge from Nature Valley that are gluten free). He really likes the Mrs. Mays nut products too, which can be found in individual packages at BJ's. And, of course, he takes leftovers quite a bit too. Fortunately for me, he doesn't require anything fancy for lunch, as long as dinner will be a little more hearty!

Can you be specific about which brands of Nature Valley Bars are gluten free? The crunchy or soft? I was under the impression that since there are oats in it, they are out....any comments on that?

    Thanks.

  3. My doctor today said that he thought at least 2 months of being really strict is important, then it is less of an issue to encounter small amounts of things like inulin. My overall impression was that I should stick to it closely.

He did say it was fine to use the yogurt I make as a culture. He said the organisms can mutate but once the quality of the yogurt goes down, use a fresh culture. He said he recommends just acidophilus as culture. He suggested Kirkman, who make a probiotic that is just acidophilus and is SCD safe. He mentioned several things that should not be in the yogurt culture.

I am fine with those of you who choose to not be strict. Just wanted to pass on what I was told when I asked.

I saw tremendously great results with only two months on the diet. I had gone a year gluten and dairy free, and after doing SCD for two months I have been able to add small amounts of SCD dairy into my diet. That has been a really yummy thing for me! Also, when I do feel glutened or a little sick, I go back to the SCD diet and have a couple of safe days. It really helps my system.

    Just my two cents!

  4. As far as why people hurt in certain places, if you have D, then your pain can be located where the valves from the stomach and from each intestine and liver. That is what happens to me. The valves get inflamed from having multiple bouts of D, and they hurt and sometimes it feels like it is on fire! As for the glutening, it can take me a week to recover, the two hours to a day being the absolute worst with achiness and D and intestinal pain. You really do get better at not making mistakes. I found that I would make so many mistakes when I first started out, and now that I am more seasoned, I have only had one bad incident this summer, and I was told the item was gluten free at the store I was at. I shouldn't have listened!!

    Best wishes to all!

  5. Thanks for the reply. That's what I thought....still getting used to all of this. Is there a gluten free alternative to weet bix? that was my sons favorite breakfast and hes just not taking to any of the others as well?

    Hi there,

I'm actually not sure what Wheat Bix is, so I'm not going to be able to answer your question. But my 7yo son loves Peanut Butter Panda Puffs by Envirokids and Rice Chex. For the Rice Chex, we put blueberries in it. I hope you can find something that will work!

  6. That's pretty ridiculous. Can you shop somewhere else? My health food store has been awesome to celiacs/gluten intolerance! They have found lots of new products to bring into the store and have samples sometimes. You probably don't have a choice of where to shop, but you certainly can be prepared with a snub the next time around! Keep your head up high!!

  7. I have a wedding to go to in 2 months. The last wedding I went to was a gluten-free, it was my brother in laws wedding, he spoke to the kitchen extensively about gluten-free food, I wound up eating a lot of cheese cubes and fresh fruit. I didn't want to make a big stink about how the food that they tried to serve me was contaminated so I just let it go as to not upset the bride and groom. They thought that they had all of their bases covered and that the place was going to serve me a wonderful gluten-free meal/appetizers/dessert, it didn't happen but I didn't think they needed to know that. Needless to say, I am not looking forward to this upcoming wedding.

Anyway, I am not very close with the bride and groom of this wedding. I saw on the restaurant's website that the couple needs to inform the staff 45 days prior to the wedding if there are any dietary issues. I don't know what my best option is:

I can do nothing, try to talk them into making me a gluten-free (and vegetarian) meal when I get there.

I can call the place directly and tell them my needs, and that I didn't want to hassle the bride with my food issues.

I can talk to the bride before the 45 day mark.

Does anyone have any experiences that they can share with these types of events? Thanks.

I've been dealing with multiple family weddings this summer, so I feel your pain! I would call the restaurant directly and let them know your circumstances. You can then judge if you feel safe eating at the reception. The last two weddings I went to, I talked to the chef and explained my circumstances. At one I had to change the meal that I had asked for, because I didn't know that the chicken was breaded. It worked out well, and I didn't get sick. However, I did have a back up of microwave rice in my room and a little cooler with deli meat and string cheese, just in case. I also brought my own salad dressing packets. Hope that helps!!

  8. The one way I always know I've been glutened is when the sound of small animals trying to claw their way out of my gut start. Seriously it is really loud. It's always accompanied with a lot of pain too besides the ever annoying gas, bloating, and D. I am pretty good about not ingesting accidental gluten. I check all my labels, but recently I was accidentally glutened by cc and it's the first time since the beginning (about 3 months ago) I've been glutened.

The problem is that this noise is really hard to deal with on top of everything else. Other people can hear it. People ask me if I'm hungry. How do you guys deal with this if you do get glutened? Do you just wait it out? is there something you take for it? I haven't found a gas pill that will really take it away. It usually lasts a few days. I tried a probiotic yesterday thinking maybe somehow it would help, but no it didn't.

I hope I don't get glutened again. I am pretty careful. I guess I am just stuck with this for the next few days :(

Again more sympathy.....I have the same issue. It is so much better now that I have been gluten free for over a year, but that is my telltale sign that I have been glutened. It sometimes happens when I consumer dairy as well. I do take a probiotic daily as a way to maintain balance in my gut. That seems to help.

  9. Hi all just wondering how long after you go gluten free should you feel better if this is the problem?

The healing is very individual, based on the amount of damaged is done to the villi and how long you have been undiagnosed. I felt a relief from my symptoms as soon as I stopped eating gluten. I had already been off dairy for 5 months at the time. Then I would get a little better daily, with some setbacks as I made various mistakes. At one year no gluten, I was about 90%. Now I am almost one hundred percent at a year and three months out. It certainly takes time, patience, and willingness to research and learn, but the reward is well worth it. I really do feel good and "normal" and enjoy eating the healthy diet that is a lifestyle now for me.

    Be well,

    Molly

  10. During American Gladiators (NBC), there was a commercial for a Kenmore refrigerator-- the mother was asking why everything in the house couldn't be in the right place. In this type of refrigerator, everything was in the place it belonged-- look when the kid opens the drawer. I believe there was a box of Wheat Free Van's waffles!!!

Would that be a first, a gluten-free product in a mainstream, nationally advertised commercial?!?!

I saw it too, and I thought, I'm going to get that gluten-free refirigerator! :D

  11. My daughter has been asking me for granola bars. I haven't had much luck finding them. I need to know which ones kids will like so I don't have to waste too much money experimenting!!

My kids and I really like the Envirokids crispy bars. They don't fall under the category of granola, but they are yummy bars that kids love.

  12. I am trying to do anything and everything to make myself feel better these days. I can honestly say that trying to stay gluten free has been one of the most difficult challenges of my life ( and it has only been 5 months). Anyway, do digestive enzymes really help? And, does anyone have any suggestions of which ones are the best. I have been reading for hours on the internet, but still don't have any clear answers. Also, does anyone know anything about bromelain? I have heard that it can help with pain (which I have a lot of). Thanks!!

I take Digest Gold, by Enzymedica. It seems to help me, especially when I eat a heavier meal. Gluten free is really tough in the beginning, but it really does get better. Hang in there!

  13. I've posted a few times lately - sorry if I'm being a pest, but I'm trying to pick my way through whatever illness I seem to have.

One thing that has been holding me back from looking into gluten intolerance is that I seem to have a more sudden/severe reacting to some fruits and vegetables than any other food. I had a salad containing broccoli and cauliflower at lunch today and the bloating and gas is enough to make me consider leaving work early! It's painful and embarrassing. This happens when I eat salad and other vegetables, too - regardless of whether they're mixed with gluten-containing products or not.

I would be SO disappointed if I found out I needed to cut gluten out of my diet, but still couldn't tolerate fruits and vegetables. Does the presence of gluten make digestion harder for these foods? Thanks in advance for any insight you can offer!

I did have that same issue, but for me the gluten intolerance had caused me to have a leaky gut. I needed to be very kind to my gut in order to heal, so I went on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. It is very strict, but it helped me heal! I can now eat all foods, (except gluten of course) and have even added some dairy back into my diet. PM me if you want more info on SCD.

  14. This is obviously an old thread, but what I am wondering if anyone reacts to the Snapea Crisps? I love them, and haven't had them for a few months now. I bought some yesterday and had a small bowl of them. I got gurgly and had D this morning. I have been super healthy for the last two months with no D! I am wondering if there is enough CC to make me ill. They do list the made on shared equipment statement.

    anyone?

I wrote to Sunmaid raisins as I love raisins and was in a paranoid state. I asked if there was any flour used anywhere to either coat the belts or prevent them from sticking together or if there was any airborne chance of contamination. Yesterday evening my phone rang and it was this lady from Sunmaid, calling me to let me know their product is wholly gluten free and no flour is used anywhere. She was munching on raisins as we talked  and told me that applied to all their dried fruit!

I also wrote to Calbee Snappea Crisps (as SOMETHING was bothering me yesterday) and they were very nice too. However, here's their reply so it is one of those "decide for yourself" cases:

    Dear Ms. Terri Collins

Thank you for sending your inquiry to us regarding the gluten content of our Snapea Crisps Original Flavor product. We receive many such inquiries and are delighted to report that our Original Flavor product does not contain any ingredient or ingredient components made from wheat, rye, or barley products.

As you probably already know we also manufacture another similar product

called Caesar Flavor Snapea Crisps. You should be aware that this product

does contain dairy components. In addition we also have other wheat based

snacks that are made on the same manufacturing line. As part of our

Allergen Control Program we only manufacture our Snapea Crisps Original

Flavor product after a full clean-up of our manufacturing line to help

control allergens that might contaminate the Original flavor product.

As far as cross-contamination we have controls in place to safeguard against

these types of contamination based primarily on segregation of ingredients

and in-process materials, and using color coded containers. We wish we were

a large enough company to have a dedicated line for the Original flavor

product, but since this is not possible at present, we safeguard the product

    as best we can.

Although we cannot guarantee that our Original Flavor Snapea Crisps are

completely free from gluten and casein, we feel that the presence of these

ingredients would be extremely minimal. We recommend however that you

consult your physician regarding our product to determine if it is

acceptable in your diet. We sincerely hope that you will be able to

    continue to enjoy our product!

    Again, thanks for contacting us!

  15. I have a question. I have been trying to stick to my gluten free diet since March. One week I will feel great, and the next week I will feel terrible again. I never know how I am going to feel when I wake up. When I first started the diet, I had so much more energy, and felt pretty good most of the time. I was so happy. However, now, I go through many days of extreme fatigue, muscle soreness, and other crazy things. For example, tonight, my feet are freezing to the point that they are burning. Also, my whole body is sweating. Does anyone else experience this? Am I always going to have to worry about how I am going to feel each day because I have celiac disease, or will life be normal again at some point????

It really does get better. I am past the one year point, and finally feel great! I did give up dairy for a year, and now am only eating some aged cheeses, butter and homemade yogurt. When I eat whole foods, I feel wonderful. The gluten-free specialty items are great for a treat now and then, but good ol' fruits, veggies, and meat are the way to go in order to achieve healing. It really depends on how damaged you were in the first place.

Has your doctor checked for vitamin deficiencies or anemia? That can happen as well as a newly diagnosed celiac from all of the time that your body was not absorbing nutrients.

    Best wishes.

  16. Supreme Pizza apparently offers gluten-free pizza, but I don't know anything about them and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the place. I read some reviews that they had been serving a "vegetarian" pizza with lard crust, so I'm not sure if I want to trust them. <_<

I've never heard of Supreme Pizza, being from Milwaukee area, but Bunky's Cafe has gluten free pizza. Just in case you didn't already know!

  17. Hi there,

We just returned from camping and I packed a cooler full of stuff. I brought my glutino pretzels and Rice chips for snacks and lots of fruits and veggies. We made eggs w/bacon, Johnsonville brats on the grill with cowboy charcoal, and burgers on the grill. Since you will have a kitchenette, you can really stock up.

For the Disney travelers, they really are great. If you can schedule a sit-down meal once a day, you can really get treated well. Also, always tell the clerk before you order that you have special dietary restrictions. They are required to get a manager, who will then tell you what is safe to eat. PM me if you want more info.
