For a start, there is a PF Changs connected to the Gurnee Mills Mall. There are also many Whole Foods in that area, so you should be able to find fresh food while you are there.
I am certain I have heard of gluten free pizza available in the Chicago area. Maybe someone else will post with firsthand experience.
Best wishes!

I'm into the Best Gluten free Family Cookbook. Good stuff.

Hi Brenda,
I have had success with SCD as well. I have been on it for about two months and all of my symptoms have cleared. I was opposite of you, D was biggest issue. I am feeling so much better, and I was gluten/dairy free for over a year before this, and just was stuck at about 90%. Now I feel 100%, and have been able to add the low-lactose SCD legal cheeses into my diet.
I have used the Pecanbread website for the introduction of foods. That has help me be kind to my tummy. I found that peanut butter was an issue for me, and I was eating it everyday pre-SCD, so it was hindering my healing all along.
If you haven't made the SCD yogurt, try it. It is phenomonal!

Hi Scotty,
I waited a full year before I tried dairy and now I am 1 year and two months out and able to tolerate low-lactose products only. I can have most hard cheeses in small amounts, butter and yogurt. that seems to be all, but everyone is different based on the amount of damage before diagnosis.
I react by the next morning in the form of D, and if I really react, my tummy gets very noisy almost immediately following consumption.
Hope that helps!

Two days ago I had an endoscopy, which found irritation in my esophagus and
stomach, AND I found out that my celiac genetic test came back. I have
both the DQ2 and DQ8 genes. That, along with the vast improvement that
resulted from my gluten-free diet, means that I officially have celiac
disease. I am relieved to at least know for sure. Now I can get my sons
tested.
The dr. prescribed three medications for me, Prilosec (reduces stomach
acid), Creon (digestive enzyme), and Misoprostol (helps produce
prostoglandin, which increases mucus in the stomach). The thing is, I am
(and have been for a very long time) devoted to natural healing. These
drugs have side effects, like diarrhea, dizziness, and more, that I don't
want to take a chance on. My mother, my brother and sister-in-law, and my
best friend (and her entire extended family) are my natural healing
support group. They all feel the same way about medications. My mother's
husband is a Chiropractor, so he's on the same page, too.
I know I have already started the healing process, because of how much
better I feel. I have read that it can take older adults as much as two
years to heal, but it can be done. My thinking is that adding medicinal
side effects is counterproductive, but adding healing supplements is
beneficial.
I am looking for natural supplements that could substitute for the above
medications, and a supplement source that is gluten-free. Any
encouragement or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I don't do well with dairy. However, I read that butter is not on the same boat as other dairy for dietary purposes. The reason is that the ingredients in dairy that cause allergies and intolerances are proteins and sugars, both of which butter doesn't contain because it's pure fat. That way we should react to it to any other fat/oil. So I'm wondering it butter is safe to eat. I don't just spread it on my bread but some chocolates have butter (milk fat) as an ingredient so I was wondering if those are safe to eat, provided they don't have other "dangerous" ingredients.
I know I should ultimately figure it out myself but I'm still trying to stabilize my gut so I need guidance before experimenting. thanks!
I do think your body will tell you what is right for it. I am dairy and gluten free and I cannot tolerate cow's butter. However, I have just found goat butter at Whole Foods and I can tolerate it! I have also been able to tolerate small amounts of goat/sheep cheese and goat yogurt. Everyone is so different, but it is worth a shot. I didn't start branching out with the alternative dairy sources until I was gluten and dairy free for over six months.
Best wishes!

Thank you everyone for your responses.
I did do a search first and the only thread that came up was the one with 1,888 pages. I just didn't want to read all of those.
I'm not sure what to do at this point. ....

I'm in the same situation....I tried just taking the cup, and then realized that I was very sick every Monday after church. There were a few Sundays that I didn't go to church and I wasn't sick on those Mondays! I was going to look into the rice wafers and see what my church says about them. They are pretty progressive for Catholics, so we will see. I don't like to draw attention to myself, so I haven't taken care of this just yet.

So your body seems to be able to handle the yogurt? I am dairy free as well and very skeptical about how I will feel with the dairy in this diet. Are you going to have the different cheeses that are allowed?
-
My friend is on this diet for three months for colitis and has noticed measurable improvements. She is following it strictly and is feeling great. She's down to 10 mg of prednisone from 20 mg 3 months ago. She plans to stick it out for two years to help her get healed up and off meds. I am thinking about starting this diet after we go to Disney at the end of the month to try to propel myself into the final stages of healing. I am at 11 months since going gluten-free/cf and seem to still be struggling with some minor issues trying to heal.
Best wishes!
If you want to start a support thread, I'd be into that!

Hi there,
If by sloshing you mean gurgling, that is totally me! I was in grad school when this all started and it was so embarassing how noisy my stomach got! Now that I am getting more healed up, that symptom is less present, but if I eat a food that doesn't agree with me, I will get that noisy stomach again.
Tinkyada pasta is about the closest thing to real pasta you can find and tastes great. The gluten-eaters in my house can't tell the difference and I serve it all the time. Does rice stick with you when you run? There are alot of microwavable rice bowls that you could still have in a dorm. Thai Kitchen has some noodle packets and soups that might stay with you as well.
My symptoms actually are helped by exercising, so maybe when you can cut out the gluten you won't get the noises when you run.
Best wishes,
Terri

The immune system of a Celiac is not suppressed....it actually hyperactive. So, it should not have anything to do with being sick, as you have described. However, if you are still ingesting gluten, whether on purpose or not, you will have malabsorption issues still and that could be what is running you down. Or it could be that you are just one of those people who get everything that goes around.
I went to age 46 before diagnosis and was at end stage but I bounced back really well, after a year or so. I never get sick, not even a cold anymore. Drives everyone else crazy because I'll be the only one who doesn't get sick in an epidemic. I always like to tell them it's because they still eat gluten!
Are you around young kids at all? If so, I find people who are, generally get sick much more often than people who aren't. You also might want to give the healing process more time....you haven't been gluten-free for very long and it can take up to 2-3 years to completely recover from it.
Good luck and good health to you!
But the immune system of a celiac is weakened because of the hyperactivity caused by ingesting gluten. The immune response to the gluten is the immune system attacking itself, but all of that work tires it out and makes us more susceptible to other stuff when the celiac is not under control. This is from the CSA website in regards to immune function:
"It is important to remember that the immune system of a person with celiac disease is weak. The auto-immune system functions at a lower-than-normal level. Infections may not be handled as well as in other people. Stamina and resilience may not be at the level they once were."
I do agree, that once you have gotten your resistance up and have got the celiac under control, it does seem like my resistance is up. Last year prediagnosis I had strep three times nad a yeast infection. I was sick constantly! Now, I'm the one that barely gets a cold when everyone else gets the flu. And I'm a teacher, so I'm around alot of bugs!

I need help deciding which probiodic to buy. What do you recommend? This would be to benefit SEVERE stomach bloating, gas and pain.
I take floragen everyday and it has really been helpful. It has 20 billion cultures per capsule and is acidophilus.

Just wanted to follow -up with a cultish group of make-up buddies! I love the eye colors! I still couldn't get the concealer to work well for me-it sort of highlighted the areas I wanted to hide, so I am sure I did it wrong. Anyway, I am so glad that I got turned on to this eye color. Today I used the fine china on my lids and loved the sparkle. We are getting hit again with more snow (Wisconsin), so the mellow color seemed appropriate and pretty.

I have been gluten-free for years and I have no idea which soups are gluten free. I did by Amy's at my local store last night, but they are quite expensive. Do you guys know of any other main brands that are gluten-free?
Steph
I'm not sure if this is what you had in mind, but Thai Kitchen and Trader Joe's both have some yummy noodle bowls that I really enjoy. Progresso Wild rice and chicken is a standby of mine as well.

I'm curious as to what type of test you did for the gluten? My 6 yo has eczema and I have celiac. He has a rash that comes and goes on his cheek that we have tried to figure out but can't. I'm close to taking him to a dermatologist to have it biopsied when it flares.
We have tried a diet response and it always seems to get foiled somehow by well-meaning relatives and I can never get a true test.
Dots are gluten free and are a little like gummy bears, if that helps at all.

I'm an everyday minerals newbie, persuaded by this thread! So how do you use the foundations? I've never used powdered make-up and don't want to appear too made-up! I got the sample pack and then a mini of a bunch of eye shadow. Thanks for any advice!!

I wasn't gluten-free when I lived in Schaumburg but, a great restaurant on the street bordering Woodfield shopping mall is the Weber Grill. Everything is grilled on individual Weber grills so, very little CC and a steak and potato would be great!
Sarah
I thought that charcoal can have wheat in it? Does anyone know if the charcoal they use at Weber Grill is gluten-free?
Thanks! Bonefish is an awesome idea. We have one in Brookfield and it is soooo good. I just need to plan ahead for the kids, cause they get impatient waiting in a restaurant. Nothing I can't handle!

Hi,
We are taking my 6yo son to the mall in Schaumberg, IL to the lego store for his birthday. Does anyone have suggestions as to where I could eat a nice sit-down meal in that area? It would double as a birthday dinner, so family appropriate is a must!
Thanks for any suggestions!

Does anyone have good tips on how to ease a cough from bronchitis that is keeping you up at night? I have not been able to eat or sleep for two days, my head is throbbing, and I feel like my lungs are aflame. Dr says it is the weather here, but I have gotten much worse since I went to his office. I might go to urgent care tomorrow morning, but right now I just want to get some sleep and stop feeling like a plague bearing zombie.
I chug nyquil, it's the only thing that helps me sleep!

Hi Everyone -
I was hoping some of you can help me. I'm pregnant w/ my second & I am the one with celiac. Luckily my daughter is fine (she's 6). I had no idea that I had celiac when she was born and hated breast feeding - so I pumped it out for 10 weeks then quit.
I really don't want to breast feed with the 2nd but the celiac doctor said it may help prevent the disease and to introduce crumbs at 4 months.
I guess my question is - for those of you with children with celiac. Did you breast feed, bottle feed? Do you think it made a difference?
I obviously want to do whats best for the baby but I can't explain the horror that I went through trying the first time. I really just want to enjoy it this time around.
Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks!
I developed celiac after I had breastfed both of my children, so I am not sure if I can offer any advice on that matter. However, I had a horrible time breastfeeding my first child because I just couldn't produce enough milk. With my second child breastfeeding was a breeze and I was able to keep at it until he was a year old. It was certainly more challenging with the second child because the first one was running around and wanted my attention when it was feeding time, but it was such a special time and I really liked the closeness of the bond created.
So, I guess my two-cents includes a reminder of how very different each child will be. Good luck and congratulations!

So I've been on BC for the last 4 1/2 years, and in that time my intimite life with my husband has suffered. My mom thinks its because of our relationship with each other, as did one of my therapists that I saw a year or so ago. My husband thinks it might be hormonal, and we've been researching other methods to not get pregnant. I've read a bit about FAM, and also some articles against BC, how it can affect you negatively.
My question is, how much of a risk am I taking getting off BC. It's done it's job in 4 1/2 year by keeping me from getting pregnant. I just worry about what it's doing/done to my body and my sex life. I've read that FAM + condoms is as effective as BC. Is this accurate? My brother and sister were both condom babies. I really don't want to get pregnant right now. What do you all think?
I just went off of b/c because I couldn't find a pill that didn't have lactose in it. And I couldn't find another method that didn't make me react with "d". So we are onto condoms as well. We have our two kids and don't want to get pregnant again either! Do you have any good advice on where to find more info on this method?
Sorry to jump in on your thread! PM me if you have some advice please!

Thanks everyone! Keep the tunes coming-it really is helpful. I'm not doing so well with my goal...but haven't given up. My favorite thing to listen to so far has been some good Dave Matthews tunes. Two-Step is a good one and they last forever, so that helps me stay on the treadmill!

Thank you. I looked at Fred Meyer and all their Hoisin sauce contained wheat. I'll just have to wait until I go to Whole Foods. I really want General Tso's chicken!
We have the brand "Dynasty" in Wisconsin and it has gluten free hoisin sauce and other good sauces. It is in the Asian food aisle in the grocery store. Can you get that brand?
Good luck!

Peanut Butter..bad Nausea?
in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Posted
Hi Mandy,
I was gluten free and dairy free for a year and still not feeling 100%. So I went on the Specific Carbohydrate diet. As I was introducing foods and noting reactions, I realized that peanut butter always made me have D the next day. Previous to SCD, I had eaten peanut butter everyday on my gluten free waffle! No wonder I wasn't getting better. So, yes, I too react to peanut butter. It is a legume, and a tough food for some to tolerate. I have since switched to almond butter and cashew butter. Cashew butter is sweeter, and almond butter tastes great with a little honey. I get these fresh ground at my grocery store.
