I got the results of both my girls' antibody tests and they were negative in all counts. I'm still suspicious of my eight year old being gluten intolerant so we have started her on the gluten-free diet.
So, I have a few questions. First, at some point should I have them re tested? My 11 year old is symptom free except for dental enamel problems and that cound be something else. The younger one is more symptomatic- some GI stuff but only occasionally. With her it's more behavioral- irritable with a capital I, she's always tired and she has a hard time consentrating and thus has difficulties with her school work. She also has enamel problems. Maybe I'm grasping at straws here but I figure it's worth trying the diet and see if things improve. Has anyone had a child like this and gone gluten-free? How long until you saw an improvement (if any at all?)

I am in a similar situation and have decided to try a week of gluten free with my son as well. He has complained of tummyaches after gluten-rich meals and has a rash on his cheek that seems to flare. Both of my kids tested negative. Since the testing seems to be so inaccurate and the disease so tough to diagnose, I've decided that if ds is willing to try a gluten-free diet and it makes him feel better, now is the time since he is only 6. I really think that the testing is up to you, but if they seem to respond to a gluten-free diet and you are already diagnosed with gluten intolerance in the least, this certainly can't hurt.
Hopefully someone with a gluten-free kid can give you advice on how long it took for the symptoms to be relieved. Best wishes!

Ok - I just read something that said that if the milk isn't homogenized it can get fat on the top. From the Horizon Organic faq section: We homogenize our milk so that the butterfat, or cream, does not rest at the top of the milk. Homogenization provides smooth, drinkable milk, and the process also allows us to offer you a variety of choices of fat levels.
tcat - maybe that's what we are seeing? does your milk smell bad too or just the streaks on top? this is driving me crazy.
It smells sour and my son won't drink it. Says it's yucky!

I've been using Whole Foods 365 Organic 2% milk and find that it seems to go bad rather quickly. Does organic milk have a short shelf life - under a week? Or maybe it's just that brand? It happens every time. I don't really notice an off smell, but when poured into my coffee the milk leaves little white streaks (for want of a better description) on top of the coffee. Should organic milk be stored at a cooler temperature than regular milk? Any information you have would be greatly appreciated.

We have an upcoming, annual camping trip with several other families. Smores are ALWAYS involved. Does anyone have a grahm cracker recomendation? Or a cracker that could be substituted instead?
We did the cookie thing as well-it was really yummy, but a little too thick for me. I made Pamela's Namaste pancakes for breakfast one morning camping and had leftovers and used those. They were awesome! I just rolled the choc and marshmellow up and they were less messy, too!

Hi,
I've posted recently about a bad rash that my 3 year old has, and my 6 year old gets a recurring rash on his face. Well, it's back after a recent trip to Chicago where both boys ate a fair amount of traveling food: pizza, sandwiches, etc. Is anyone aware of a dermatologist in this area that is familiar with celiac? Both kids have had negative blood work, but seem to have related symptoms. 3 year old especially.

My 3 year old has had trouble with the milk as well. He would be so constipated he wouldn't go for 4-5 days and would cry because his stomach hurt. Taking him off of milk has improved this alot!

I bought a loaf of light rice bread and tried a few slices last night. I haven't bought a new toaster yet, so I just made PB&J straight on it, and first of all, the stuff didn't absorb into the bread.
All gluten free breads taste better toasted or heated up. That might help a bit. My favorite brand of storebought gluten-free bread is Kinnikinic brand Italian tapocia rice bread. It is a change!

I would take your child to the pediatrician and get him/her a skin biopsy at a dermatologist ASAP. If it is DH a skin biopsy is all you need to confirm celiac and he/she won't need have to have an endoscopy. I have DH and it is hard to say what is and what isn't DH. Most of it looks like blisters but some of it looks like hives too. A skin biopsy can tell you.

Thanks, I had no idea that they could biopsy the skin! It sure does seem suspect considering the circumstances and it is very itchy!

Hi there,
My 3 and 6 year old have both been tested for celiac and came up negative. I had inconclusive blood test results, but respond 100% to a Gluten-free Casein-free diet. Here's my question: this morning my 3 year old was complaining that he was itchy on his bottom, I took a look and he has little red bumps all over his bottom. My family mostly eats gluten-free because I cook. However, yesterday we went to Chicago and I let them have a normal waffle on the car trip because it was easy food to eat in the car, they had pizza at Shedd, and then a grilled cheese at Rainforest Cafe. My 6 year old has had a mild bumpy rash on his arm for the last week, but eats a bit of gluten everyday and has excema.
3 yr old also has trouble with C, but that has been alot better this summer. However, as I said before, he eats mostly Gluten-free Casein-free because of my diet.
I have toyed with the idea of having the 3-year old biopsied, because he seems to react and it seems related to gluten. Please help with your thoughts on whether or not this could be the celiac rash. His pediatrician seems to think that we have ruled that out, and now I feel like I am being hypersensitive to the issue. He also has trouble with C, but that has been alot better this summer. However, as I said before, he eats mostly Gluten-free Casein-free because of my diet. Please help me solve this problem with any advice that you may have! Thanks,

Your story sounds very much like mine. It does take awhile for your body to heal. I am on month 4 and when I get glutened, it takes about a week for my bm's to be normal and for me to feel energized. You may have celiac, the biopsy is the gold standard of diagnosis. If you respond to the gluten free diet, then you probably need to be gluten free, especially since you reacted so strongly to your mistake. If you do want a diagnosis with a biopsy, then you need to continue to eat gluten until you have it done. Unfortunately, you may get another false negative if you don't. It sounds like the naturpath can help guide you through this experience. This forum is great for getting answers! Good luck and welcome.
A couple things that might help you as you heal:
you may want to try a probiotic to help get some good bacteria in your system
alot of people have great lists for first timers on their personal accounts. Noglugirl has a really good list that can help get you started.

So I've done some research and it looks like microgestin might be a good option. It has anhydrous lactose, but I thought I remembered reading that is not an issue. Any thoughts?

According to an earlier post, Kariva (which is the generic of Mircette), is Gluten-free Casein-free. However, I was unable to verify that information.

Have you considered an IUD? It is more effective, safer, and no need to remember every day.
All of these look like good possibilities. Does anyone take Demulen? I never take the placebos anyway, so that isn't a concern!
I am actually on the nuvaring now, but my doctor thinks I am hyper sensitive and that it is affecting my GI tract. I can' get rid of d after I insert the ring each month, so we thought we'd try something "less invasive". I think an IUD would operate in much the same way.

I had the same issue- was looking for gluten-free and DF birth control. I don't think there are any pills out there that fit that criteria. I am also using the patch and it has worked well so far!
I actually had used the patch for awhile before all of this had started...whenever I put a new patch on I would feel so nauseous for a few few days, almost like morning sickness. That may be a good option again at this point if the pill is out.

My family and I are going to attempt camping at Peninsula State Park in Door county in August. Does anyone know of any good restaurants to attempt while we are there? We will do alot of cooking on our own, but I'm sure there will be a rainy day that we want to get out of the campground and get a meal. Any thoughts would be appreciated! Oh, my sons are 3 and 6, so child-friendly is a must!

I think that my doctor was concerned about building my immune system back up, since I have been getting everything that comes around. I have a sore throat now, which feels like strep, and I've had that three times this year! My bosy can't handle any more antibiotics-hate them!! The vote of encouragement is really helpful. Thanks.

My experience with Msg is volatile. It goes right through me! It is a much worse reaction than when I get glutened.

Hi,
I went to my Dr. yesterday for a follow-up on my iron levels, and she suggested that I see a homeopath in order to determine a homeopathic remedy for when I get glutened.
I got glutened a week and half ago and I am finally feeling better. My symptoms range from d, to dizzy and lighteheadness to sore throat and a cough and seem to last such a long time. My questions:
1) The cost for a consult is $250. Is this going to be worth it? I have done alot of self-education, and have not read anywhere about homeopathy being helpful. I am very open to alternative medicine, I see an integrative doctor.
2) I have been thinking of sending in for Enterolab tests to see if I have any other sensitivities and have seen positive comments on the boards about them. Would that be a better use of my money? The tests are quite expensive as well, so I couldn't do both.
Any experience would be appreciated. I have until Mon. to cancel my appt. that I made for the homeopath.

I was reading the brochure that the celiac foundation put out and it said "*caution* Rice Dream contains gluten*. What??? I went to the Rice Dream website and the ingredients are:
Ingredients: filtered water, organic brown rice (partially milled), expeller pressed high oleic safflower oil, tricalcium phosphate, sea salt, vitamin A palmitate, vitamin D2, vitamin B12,
Is there hidden gluten there? I feed it to my daughter because she can't have milk OR soy.. god please tell me I can still give her this.
For what it is worth, I bought rice dream at first when I was just lactose intolerant and made the mistake of drinking it when I was later gluten intolerant and it made me sick. I am pretty sensitive and I won't drink it.

Hi. After getting accidentally glutened, my son has horrible problems passing gas for a week or more. It is especially bad at night. I'm guessing this is because his daytime movements help move the gas through his system, but at night he doesn't have the benefit of all of that walking/crawling.
- Is there anything we can do to help him (and us!) cope better through the gassy periods?
- Is there a medicine we can talk to his doctor about prescribing?
- Are there things we should do during the day to help make the nights less difficult (and endless!)?
I posted this in this section rather than the Babies and Children section since I'm thinking that the gas issue is likely something that affects gluten-intolerant people of all ages.

My son who is 3 now has the same issues and is constipated quite frequently...the best remedy when he gets like that and what helps him pass is probiotics. There is a children's formual that I buy at our health food store that needs to be refrigerated. I open the capsule and mix it into any bevereage he is drinking and he doesn't even know he is taking it. It goes best in milk/soymilk if your son drinks that.

I just went to the dentist and the hygenist called about the cleaner they use and it was gluten free. You may want them to call the manufacturer of the cleaner and go from there. I also had a cavity filled and there was no gluten in the filling or anesthesia.
