Well, you can probably safely assume gluten intolerance at this point. Gluten is obviously making you feel sick. It's hard to say "celiac" for sure, because the IgG antibodies are less specific than the IgA ones, and without the EMA or TtG being positive, there is a chance your IgG elevation could be from another condition (see paragraph below). Still, you can see, there is a 91% chance it IS celiac.

Unfortunately, that leaves you in the boat of "maybe yes, maybe no". I've seen you wrestling with this on some other threads. If you are going to do more testing, you really need to make sure they do the total IgA along with everything else.

Gluten intolerance is a real condition, and can have a lot of negative effects on your life just like full-blown celiac; just without the flattened villi. Do you need a hard-copy celiac diagnosis for some reason?

Here's an explanation of the antibodies from an article on this site:

    Anti-Gliadin Antibodies:

Both IgA and IgG anti-gliadin antibodies (AGA) are detected in sera of patients with gluten sensitive enteropathy (celiac disease). IgG anti-gliadin antibodies are more sensitive but are less specific markers for disease compared with IgA class antibodies. IgA anti-gliadin antibodies are less sensitive but are more specific. In clinical trials, the IgA antibodies have a specificity of 97% but the sensitivity is only 71%. That means that, if a patient is IgA positive, there is a 97% probability that they have celiac disease. Conversely, if the patient is IgA negative, there is only a 71% probability that the patient is truly negative for celiac disease. Therefore, a positive result is a strong indication that the patient has the disease but a negative result does not necessarily mean that they don not have it. False positive results are rather uncommon but false negative results can occur. On the other hand, the IgG anti-gliadin antibodies are 91% specific and have an 87% sensitivity. This means that they will show positive results more readily but there is not as strong a correlation with celiac disease. It is less specific. Patients with other conditions but not afflicted with celiac disease will occasionally show positive results. IgG anti-gliadin antibodies are detectable in approximately 21% of patients with other gastrointestinal disorders. This test might yield false positive results but is less likely to yield false negative results.

Thank you for the great response! I dont know IF there is a hard reason that I NEED to know. It would suck to be the 3% the is negative and eat gluten free ON ONE HAND. On the other hand I feel better off of gluten. Maybe I wonder if gluten intolerant can cause the same diseases? Maybe I am wanting someone to say my symptoms are something else. I honestly have no interest in going to the dr tomorrow. I kinda hope you would say yep you have it! And I would be done :)

  2. Was told I was not Celiac by my GI. I went back to gluten. I feel horrible. Nauseaus all day plus much more. I dug and found my old results. So do you think I have Celiac?

    Found my old results (Oct/06)

Gliadin Antibody IGG 31 High Range <11

Gliadin Antibody IGA 6 Range <6

Reticulin igg ab <1:10 Range <1:10

Reticulin IGA AB <1:10 Range <1:10

Tissue Transglut. IGA <3 Range <5

Then found 03/07/11 Everything the same but Gliadin IgG 23.4 High Range <10

What does it mean that eveything is normal BUT the Gliadin IgG?

It's a bit much for you to handle right now but you mentioned a child. You may want to get your child tested by a GOOD ped. She/he needs to keep eating gluten until all testing is finished though. And at the same time it would be so much better if you had a gluten-free household. Maybe you can just give your child a gluten sandwich for lunch & gluten toast with breakfast but otherwise gluten-free household. People do have shared households but it's not easy. I did it until we found out my hubs is also celiac. I can't tell you the mental stress it's taken off both of us not having to worry about cc. Not to mention cooking is a whole lot easier.

Tell us about your child. Also, what caused you to be tested for celiac the first time around when you got the dx?

I also would like to add that the scope probably came up neg. b/c doc didn't take any biopsies OR not ENOUGH. There's a lot of territory to cover inside there & they really need to take 8, 10, even 16 biopsies.

as far as the child...You mean in old posts? My oldest daughter who is 9 now. Has severe icthyosis. We tried gluten-free for about 6 months and nothing really changed. I posted her test results in a very old post of mine.

    I have 3 small children btw :)

    1 with Tree nut allergy.

It's okay honey. When you feel better you can look for the blood work & share it.

I'm still so upset over what has happened to you b/c of idiot doc! I can hardly type. We've seen this stuff all too often too.

I can't emphasize enough that you need to do whole foods only for at a bare minimum in your case 4 moths --- more like 6. You were dairy intolerant b/c you weren't able to process it b/c of the damage to your villi.

Read the Newbie 101 & that will hep a lot.

Thank you! I will read the Newbie 101. Im too sick to feel angry today. Tomorrow I am going to wake up angry though!!!

I am a wedding photographer. This is going to be so hard. Being gone for 10 hours with no food! Other than bars, etc.

  5. I am so confused. I was dx Celiac 9 years ago via blood test. Negative scope. Doctore told me to go gluten-free and I did. For 5 years. Kept feeling sick still so went back and they redid the blood work and dr said well your levels are so high I think you are allergic to gluten and if your only symptom is diarhhea then you can eat it and take imodium. I followed her advise for a year or so and returned and saw someone else that said with pos blood test you have celiac disease and quit eating gluten. THEN I had a baby and I discovered that I was reacting the whole time to dairy. When I went off dairy while nursing I didnt get diarhhea again. SOooo, I decided I was dairy intolerant and started eating gluten again. Well, I was sick all the time stilll beacuse I love dairy and kept eating it. Went to GI one last time. Doc said I dont think you have celiac disease (probabily cuz I am very overweight) I think you have post gallbladder removal syndrom. He gave me pills to take when I eat hihg fat and sent me on my way. This seemed to work. I took the pills and never had post meal diarhhea. I continued to still have morning nausea and 4-6 morning bathroom diarhhea(water) trips.

I have been eating gluten for 1 year and just last Monday became so sick. I have been sick ever since. Nauseau won't stop. Im also having numbness in my hands and feet. Hands mainly. Should I go back gluten free (2 positive blood tests) or should I go to a new gi and get rescoped? Confusion lies in the fact that I have no gallbladder and am very sensitive to protein and fat.

I am OK going gluten free today as I cant stand feeling like this anymore.

Help please! I am miserable [:(]

  6. Hey there. I had to tell you all about this recipe. It makes the best bread and is RELIABLE. I am a terrible baker. Fail most recipes...I have made this 5 times and all times are great.

I do use the Better Batter Flour. it may work with some other flour blend......

It is Brioche Sandwich bread. Look it up at Better Batter.org

I did add 1/4 cup of fibersure to it today to make it less unlhealthy. Next time I will be replacing the 8 T of shortening with something. I usually replace oil with baby food yellow squash with great results. I think I will do 4T shortening and 4T squash. Will Let you know. I often add flax seed too.

I hope you enjoy it as much as my WHOLE family. my husband requests it and he eats gluten!!!

  7. Thanks for the responses....

I am worried that her skin will cause her embarresment soon. That is why I am forcing the gluten-free for now. However, the doctor says her testes are negative so with the expense, and disappointment on her cute little face.....You get the idea.

It is so easy to talk yourself in and out of whether the diet is helping her. We have a pool...is it the chlorine???? She snuck Cookie Crisp BUT she swam the same day....Is it eczema or DH? One doctor says eczema one says DH.

No she did not have the DH biopsied. Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) was one of the tests on the Lab paper....I thought it seemed like a Weak Positive too!

We are going to continue on the gluten-free diet and see what comes of it.

  8. I have celiacs and my 5yo daughter has SEVERE skin issues. It seems that her skin is better gluten-free. PRIOR to making her gluten-free I had testing done on her. SHE WAS EATING GLUTEN FILLED diet at the time of testing. The tests are negative.

Does that mean she will NEVER have celiacs?

    This is the results:

    IgA <4 (negative 0-4)

    IgG <9 (Negative 0-9)

(tTG) IgA <4 (negative 0-3, Weak Pos 4-10)

Tissue Translutaminase (tTG) IgG <6 (Negative 0-5, weak positive 6-9)

Endomysial Antibody IgA Negative (negative 27-195)

    Immunoglobulin A, QN, Serum 135

    Celiac Disease HLA DQ assoc.

    DQ2 (DQA1 0501/0505, DQB1 02XXNegative

    DQ8 (DQA1 03XX, DQB1 0302) Negative

    Hey All,

I was diagnosed with celiac (blood and biopsy test) 2 years ago, and felt great on a gluten-free diet for one year. I then started having stomach pain (like heartburn) and abdominal discomfort the moved around and that came and went daily. I've had scopes, CT scans, and test for H. pylori and all are negative. Doctors ran out of ideas, other than acid blockers which often made symptoms worse.

I tried going on a simple foods diet to eliminate typical allergic foods (soy, dairy, etc.) and nothing seemed to help. Then the symptoms went away, more or less, for a few months. Now syptoms are back, and even more persistent (daily for over a month). I am super strict with my diet (eating non-allergenic food like rice, broccoli, spinach, sweet potatoes, hormone/ antibiotic-free chicken) and getting no relief. Dinner parties are not so fun, as I bring my own food and don't drink any alcohol or coffee.

I've also tried ranitidine for acid with no results. I feel like stress may play a factor in the symptoms, but not sure. Considering acupuncture and herbal remedies.

Thanks for letting me rant--I am really frustrated. I appreciate any advice.

    Hey there...any results???

I have been gluten-free for 1.5 years. I have been miserable this past week. Pain, burning, nausea and headache. I have taken Prevacid, Zofran (nauseau) NOTHING helps. I feel weak and fatigued.

    I am grasping for straws!

  10. That is funny. I recently posted that as a tip on here :) I had the pan. Actually I spoke to the lasy who makes it and she said It was too much moisture! It is VERY humid here sooooo I will be trying again today after I pick up my new Kitchenaid mixer....

  11. I made bread today with it and had some VISUAL issues (not taste). The thing rose about double the height of the loaf pan in the oven. Then FELL flat when I took it out of the oven. Therefore, It is not sliceable. But My GOODNESS tastes just like white sandwhich bread. Same texture too.! Plus the crust is so flaky. I have eaten about 5 slices now and I was supposed to start back on low carb diet today. (made this for my dd) :)

I am a cookin fool. Probibily the most satisfied I have been since going Gluten Free.

  12. Ok...I own a Party Animals Co. A online childrens party company. We are adding allergy friendly products to the site. The people at Domata Flour mailed me some samples. I am a bit of a skeptic about wheat replacers. So I did not have high hopes. I have yearned for pizza for years!

Well, I am a beliver!! I made pizza for my BRAND new Celiac 5yo daughter. Who remembers her Papa Johns Pizza from last week.......She LOVED it. As a matter of fact, I made it for her then we went to soccer practive. She was in the back seat with a friend and I overheard her trying to tell on me! She said "I am not supposed to have flour but my mom made me pizza tonight". LOL

It was simple to make too.

She also has a seasoned breading that I used to make the most unbelivable chicken tenders. I used the domata seasoned blend....egg with sweet potatos and carrots (baby food, 1 jar total) from the Sneaky Chef book.... and then coated them with rice chex crushed with ground almonds for protein. I cooked them in 2 T of olive oil till brown then baked them the rest of the way. I will be making more of these tonight to freeze.

I am planning to premake some pancakes, chicken and dumplings and bread tonight to store in the freezer.

I hope you all enjoy this as much as us!
