Is it celiac?
GFinDC replied to Elizabeth K's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The tests depend on antibodies being active in the blood stream. So they aren't accurate if the antibodies levels are falling because of the gluten-free diet. The tests are DGP IgA, DGP IgG, EMA, total serum IgA, ttg IgA. The total serum IgA test is a measurement of your immune systems general ability to make IgA type antibodies of any kind. Since the... -
OTC Medication

Riccola used to make some gluten-free cough drops. Be sure and check their ingredients before buying though. https://www.ricola.com/en-us/products/assortment/cough-drops---oral-anesthetic -
If it's DH, do I have celiac disease?
GFinDC replied to Baby Blues's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Hi Baby Blues. You do need to be eating a little gluten each day for the DH testing. For DH they take a small biopsy of skin from next to a blister, not on it. DH can take 6 months or more to clear up from some people. Dapsone can be used to treat DH on a temporary basis. That might be a reason to pursue the testing so you can get a Dapsone RX if... -
Hi Alice, Chicken eggs are a good source of iron also. Free range eggs are the way to go. There is an iron fish that people put in their cooking pots to increase the iron in food they eat. Maybe worth trying, I don't know for sure. https://luckyironfish.com/ A cast iron cooking pan might do just as well as the fish. Your stool can be tested...

Possible Celiacs?
GFinDC replied to cb1988's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, Your symptoms do sound like they could be caused by celiac disease. The genetic test is a good idea IMHO. Some people with celiac are sero-negative (don't show up on antibody testing) but still have the condition. Another test you should ask for is a vitamin and mineral panel. Damage to the small intestine lining by celiac can cause mal-absorption... -
Hi Lois, It may be difficult to know when you ingesting gluten with no symptoms. The best you can do is do your best. Very helpful, I know. It's generally safer to eat to eat whole, unprocessed foods. Foods such as meats, veggies, eggs, nuts and fruit. If it comes in a box or has more than 3 ingredients it's more likely to be a problem. Think...

Sometimes people who are intolerance to nightshades can have joint pain. Nightshades we eat are potatoes, peppers, eggplant and tomatoes. Cutting those out of your diet may help with pain in joints. For me it took over a month for the joint pain to go away. But it did, so goodbye potatoes!

Struggling with Food-related Depression
GFinDC replied to kristid4d's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Kristi, There are plenty of people with celiac disease around who have had emotional/mental type symptoms. There is a thread topic on "Anger, quick temper, depression" on the forum from years ago and similar threads pop up fairly regularly.. Some things that can affect mood are vitamin/mineral deficiencies. Vitamin D is one possibility but... -
And a gluten removed beer is different from a gluten free beer.

Ignorance comes in many forms, including the doctor form, Agreeing with Trents find a new doc. Try a search for celiac and doctor and your city or state name, Be aware that you need to keep eating a small amount of gluten until all testing is done. Otherwise the testing is inaccurate. Many doctors are unaware of proper testing for celiac disease...

Possibly Celiac?
GFinDC replied to Marina-M's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
More bad news Marina. Most people with celiac disease who stop eating gluten for a whole and then start back on gluten find they have worse symptoms on restarting it. What Trents described is called a gluten challenge, and some people can't finish it. It may be better for you to find a private doctor to test your blood antibodies right now. Or stay... -
My understanding is the risk of COVID are low for people in good health and not considered elderly. Not non-existent risk, but low risk. The VAERS data is publicly available to look up. But IMHO it is likely not accurate because people don't always report reactions to VAERS. They may not be reported very often even? The 3 people in the video were all...

Possibly Celiac?
GFinDC replied to Marina-M's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Marina, I have some bad news for you. The tests for celiac disease don't work right if we are not eating gluten consistently each day. The tests are for antibodies to wheat protein and depend on active antibodies being in the bloodstream. So it's important to keep eating a small amount of gluten each day until all testing is competed. Usually... -

Celiac disease & seizures
GFinDC replied to Sarah Lee in OZ's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think it would be good to ask his doctor to draw blood for a full celiac disease test panel now. If you wait until you get one in the mail the antibodies may not show up by then. Celiac disease antibodies decline after we stop eating gluten. If he is not eating gluten now, then there may be no point in doing any celiac disease testing as it sound like... -
It only takes one positive antibody type to do damage to your gut. Have you talked to your GI about the results? Generally the next step after positive blood results is an endoscopy to check for damage to the small intestine lining. You need to keep eating gluten until all testing is complete. So talking to your doc would be a good idea to find out if...

You have 2 positive antibody results, so most likely do have celiac disease. Ravenwood is right, it would be good for you to get your vitamin and mineral levels tested. Unfortunately, many people with celiac can't tolerate milk/dairy at first. So it's important to get a calcium supplement like calcium citrate. Some of the calcium citrate supplements have...

Hi, Your body should not show damage from an immune attack if you haven't been eating gluten, except in rare cases. That is the whole point of the gluten-free diet, to give our bodies a chance to heal by not eating gluten. Not having damage show on the endoscopy after being gluten-free does not change your celiac disease status. That is the normal...

Thanks RMJ, that article is helpful!

I don't think Trents said they do throw antibody levels off? Anyway, it doesn't seem like they would as the tests are geared towards gliaden, the gluten in wheat, not in oats. That's just my thinking though, not some text book answer. Anti-gliaden is not the same as anti-avenin right?

Hi Aaron, You can do an elimination diet to find out what foods to avoid and also what foods are safe. Then stick with those safe foods. It's ok to try the bad foods one at a time after getting better. Some foods sensitivities are temporary, some are permanent. Testing them is the way to find out. You can start by choosing 5 foods that are safe...

Even gluten-free oats are a problem for some celiacs. Oat gluten can cause the same immune response for about 10% of celiacs as rye, barley, and wheat does..

My 2.5 year old results
GFinDC replied to Lakesmom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi The DGP IgA and DGP IgG are both high. Usually there is a typical range the lab uses to rate the readings. Anyway, she most likely has celiac disease. the usual next step is an endoscopy with biopsies to check for small intestine damage consistent with celiac disease. But she is young and with the Covid thing they may decide not to do the endoscopy...
