  1. You ask about supplements. Many celiacs, due to failure to absorb nutrients, develop specific nutritional deficiences. Common ones are Vits. B12 and D and iron/ferritin although they should all be checked. You should have your GP run a nutrient panel for you and then supplement accordingly. If you do have deficiencies you will need a stronger strength...
  2. For every person who tests positive for celiac disease there are potentially six or seven others who have the same symptoms but test negative, currently termed non-celiac gluten intolerant because they haven't derived any other name for them (the medical profession only recognized the condition last year!). You may well be one of them, and apart from eliminating...
  3. I think it is a good idea that you have eliminated dairy to start with because its digestion is affected by the damage done by gluten in the small intestine. When people say they are silent celiacs, some of them mean that they do have absolutely no symptoms. Others recognize that they have been having symptoms which they always thought were 'normal...
  4. Also, Lindt makes a 70% dark chocolate block which always used to be gluten free and soy free (if that is a concern, even though their other chocolates aren't.)
  5. The DGP has, I believe, about 99% specificity for celiac disease. And it is, as the doctor said, a very sensitive test. It will often pick the disease up in its early stages before there is much intestinal damage.
  6. One month gluten free is a bit early to start suspecting other intolerances; you are barely beyond gluten withdrawal. Stay the course for a good three months and then you have a better chance of seeing a pattern to your reactions if you are still having them, and a food and symptom diary would be helpful. In the beginning symptoms and reactions tend to...
  7. Your total IgA is normal, not low. If it were low (i.e., did not fall within the normal range) then the other IgA tests would not be valid. I would not, however, ignore the positive IgG. We have posters on the board whose only positive blood test was DGP IgG, and they were positive on biopsy.
  8. The gluten goes out of your system pretty much right away; it's the autoantibodies your body has made to fight it that take a little longer to clear. Even so, as jhol says, the only way to know is to try it. I had arthritic bony protrusions on my fingers when I first quit eating gluten. My joints have remodeled over the years since, and no more little...

  10. Yes, I believe someone should be following blood work with results such as those. He really needs iron and D supplements, his sed rate is elevated; and, of course his IgA tests were negative - don't know about the IgG. Could be he is not getting enough gluten?? It's so hard to know how much a child needs or... if he is NCGI. I am glad your older son...
  11. Yes, and another new meaning too, Loey. Our upstairs ensuite has full view of the roof, including my shower room which looks out over the harbor -- no door or curtain, no obscure glass. They got here too early in the morning for me and kept me from washing my hair all day because I didn't want to BE the view
  12. We all think it would be nice if we didn't have to eat gluten free but that's not the reality. We have to deal with what is as much as possible, not what we wish it would be. It is not necessary for all celiac tests to be positive ~~ one is enough. The tests all exist because not all of them will pick it up; some catch the disease earlier than others...
  13. Up until today I have had to go upstairs to peek at what is going on next door -- yes! neighbors' house finally being rebuilt two years and two months after the fact, having settled the wrangling between the Govt. EQC and their private insurer as to who was going to pay for what. Today, after the rain (and before the next rain) they have been flat out putting...
  14. Don't forget wooden and plastic cutting boards and stirring utensils. No shared spreads or anything a knife can be dipped in. Colander. Use a paper towel or a plate on the counter always. You probably know all these things Basically just analyze everything you do in the kitchen and think of how gluten could sneak in there. Once you've mastered it...
  15. Those results look like they measured the total serum blood levels of the three different types of antibodies. They did not test for celiac disease. Aprilelayne is correct. These are the tests known as the celiac panel: Anti-Gliadin (AGA) IgA Anti-Gliadin (AGA) IgG Anti-Endomysial (EMA) IgA Anti-Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA Deamidated Gliadin...
  16. I'm glad you've found the Specific Carbodhdrate Diet helpful for you. Many of our posters have had to go this far or sometimes even further to cope with all their food intolerances and heal their leaky guts and SIBO. Some use the GAPS diet also. But you would be surprised how many on this board do not eat any grains, or have had to go without grains for...
  17. Hi there, MsCurious Thanks for making a return visit and sharing your good news with all. There will be many a heart warmed by reading your post and many a hope revived!
  18. So sorry to hear of Bryce's passing, Em. And poor Jack Animals hold such special places in our hearts.
  19. We have had a very wet cloud sitting on top of us for two days; today it's just a case of the drearies!! We are bored, Miss Em is bored, the plants are bored and going to sleep, everything is shutting down..... Next thing you know we will be firing up the wood stove to cheer ourselves up! I booked my fares yesterday
  20. I disagree with you on the term "cross-reactive" but many of us have an additional intolerance to corn.
  21. Welcome to the forum, Addison. There is no such thing as a stupid question, unless it is an unasked one
  22. Not all reactions are to gluten. Some of us have additional intolerances. I cannot eat quinoa, nor millet or amaranth. However, I handle sorghum, buckwheat and teff perfectly well. You will have to identify your own intolerances. It makes no sense to eat something that makes your joints ache.
  23. There is no gluten in aloe stems. I am not saying you do not react to aloe, but if you do it is not to gluten. Gluten is only found in wheat products, barley, rye and foods contaminated with gluten, like oats. ActualIy some people react to even cerified gluten free oats. I cannot imagine aloe being processed anywhere near wheat. Aloe is, in fact, a calmant...
  24. Hello, and welcome to the board. I am one who has suffered from gluten/lectin arrthythmias. Tell me more and how I can potentially help you.
  25. You think heroin is good for heroin addicts or alcohol is good for alcoholics? Stuff becomes bad for you because you crave it and consume too darned much of it. Sure sign of addiction. We always become addicted to the stuff that's bad for us. Lay off it Go back to buckwheat and soup and feel better
