    I am into about week 4 or 5 of gluten free again. I am still waiting to hear when my specialist appointment is and know that I might be doing the stupid thing by staying gluten free in the event they are going to biopsy. I keep telling myself "tomorrow I'll go back on", but then I just can't stand the thought of it, and dealing with the symptoms again....so, having said that, here is the list of symptoms I have noticed that have disappeared since going gluten free.

    I am through the withdrawal and am feeling great!! I am experimenting with a few different bread mixes out there. The Bob's Red Mill Whole Grain one is very good if you like the taste of rye bread. I also like the Kinnikinik sunflower flax seed bread. That one is not a yeast bread, it is a little heavier and sweeter than most breads, but is very good to make a peanut butter/banana sandwich with. I am also eating tons of salads and fresh fruits, and frittata's are also...

    I have been looking forward to going gluten free again, but the cravings have hit!! The first time I went gluten free I remember having the cravings...I would wander the house, wondering "what can I eat that will fill me up!!". It took a week or so and then I felt so much better. The second time I went gluten free I didn't notice the cravings....this time, though, I am noticing!! I am pretty active so do need to take in a fair bit, but here is what I have eaten so far today...

    So I decided to take the plunge and go back on gluten while waiting for the GI appointment. I was going out of town this weekend and figured this was a good time to fall off the wagon. Yesterday, breakfast glutens included a piece of toast, lunch glutens included fried sweet potatoes that had been dredged in flour and a little slice of carrot cake. This morning I had 2 baking powder biscuits with my boiled egg, and at lunch some turkey soup (had noodles in it) with my salad...

    Things are moving more quickly than I thought they might. I just started glutening myself two days ago, and I got a call this morning on an appointment with the GI specialist. It is in 3 1/2 weeks and is a "consultation" so I am assuming will just be a review of my medical history, symptoms and previous testing to decide what to do next. However, I am okay with it...gives me a chance to keep glutening myself with hopefully enough time for more symptoms and reactions to...

    Here is my story. I don't know if I am celiac but am in the midst of the process. Being in Canada with our "universal health care" system, it may be quite a long while before I get any diagnosis.
     
    I probably had symptoms eons ago, just never really realized they were symptoms. The first GI issues I really remember having was when I was pregnant. I would get these really gassy, bloated bouts and just figured it was a pregnancy thing...I became gassier than normal....

    Well, my doctor is sure it was just a viral thing I had after all and not an allergic reaction so no allergy testing for me. It actually makes more sense it is viral based on all the flu like symptoms and the time it took to come and go. I am back into my regular routine, taught 2 spin classes and a conditioning class and went for a run over the last few days...no relapse, so am good as new.
     
    In the meantime, I am planning all my summer running and am looking forward ...

    Okay, so I don't have pityriasis rosea and it wasn't a virus fluey thing that interfered with my marathon. Apparently I am experiencing a full body allergic reaction to something....oh fun.
     
    I was covered in big blotchy spots as of end of day yesterday and figured it was the pr I was diagnosed with yesterday...this morning woke up at 4, had to pee, and took a look in the mirror and it wasn't pretty (not that big splotchy spots were). My eyelids were all puffed ...

    So my first marathon in a year was this weekend...in short, it was a race gone bad.
     
    A few days before I started feeling vaguely fluish, but kept pushing the thought aside. If I don't think it, it can't happen, right?     I am 1 1/2 weeks away from my first gluten free marathon. I really don't think food wise it will be any different than the others I have done. I use Cliff Bloks and Power Gels as food during the run...I had found previously I could tolerate Power Bars as well, but I think they have oat flour...if they don't I'll probably start using those for my next round of training. I am gunning for a sub 4 hour time, so we'll see how it goes. My PB is 4:00:21 so if I shave even 30 seconds...

    Okay, so I think I now have an understanding of my results....
     
    I am HLA DQ 1,1 (5,6), which means I am a double DQ1 with subtypes 5 & 6. According to Enterolabs (who I did not test through as I got genotype testing done for free here in Canada) I am positive for genes that predispose to gluten sensitivity and having the double copy DQ1 increases the sensitivity. Had I not had the option for genotype testing here, I probably would have gone the Enterolab route....

    So now I have more questions (you would think I could just let it go at this point!!). I have been digging around for more info on what DQ5 and DQ6 actually mean. It looks like they are a subtype of DQ1, so am I actually DQ1 (subtype 5,6) which would make me a double DQ1? This is so confusing...if anyone knows the answer please post it here for me and if I find the answer I 'll post it so those looking in the future can maybe stumble across it.

    I got a call from the GI the other day indicating that I had not tested positive for either gene that would predispose me to Celiac disease...I requested a copy of the results be mailed to me and I am so glad that I did...and they arrived so quickly.
     
    Turns out I don't have the HLA DQB1 08 or 02 which are the 2 main celiac genes. However, what the GI didn't tell me is what I did have which is HLA DQB1 05 and 06, which I have discovered are two of the genes implicated ...

    I had my meeting today with the gastroenterologist. She was very nice and had all the relevant info from my doctor. Basically, she indicated that since I have been gluten free off and on for the past 8 months (the last 6 weeks have been on gluten, 5 weeks before that gluten free, 2 months before that on and then about 5 months gluten free before that) she would want to see me do a gluten challenge for 3 - 6 months before doing an endoscopy.     I am so glad I am keeping a food log. I have read of other people having this happen....it seemed like when I first reintroduced gluten I had symptoms that were more severe (stomach pains, bloating, burping, etc.), but it almost seems like after a couple of weeks, the symptoms are easing off and I am still on gluten.
     
    Here is the trick though. I have been diligently keeping a food log of everything I eat and every symptom I notice, related or not....every burp, ...

    I love my carbs! I love toast, muffins, bagels with peanut butter and cereals (hot or cold). That is why I was so disappointment at my first venture into gluten free breads. Being new to the whole gluten free world I started off buying the frozen, pre-made loaves. The slices were all frozen together, so there I stood in my kitchen when I got home, chiselling bits of "bread" off this frozen loaf. Toasted...not bad. Made a sandwich for lunch the next day.
