  1. Hi and thanks for making me feel welcome! I looked all over, and even for my Kindle, but no book. *sigh* That's ok. I have been doing research on different homeschool curriculums for my son and haven't been on in a few days. Wow this thread moves fast! Happy Thursday ya'll!

We love Udi's whole grain bread. We find it in the freezer section of our local health food stores. It is really good warmed in the microwave for 20 sec or in a toaster. We also use it for French Bread for breakfast. It is really good. We have tried all the other brands in the store, and did not like any of them until we found this one. Worth a try. I hope you like it! Even my gluten eating husband and son like it (and thats saying a lot!!)

My two kids and I have tried several kinds of bread and have even made our own, but I have to say Udi's is awesome. It tastes the closest to regular bread so far. I especially like the multi grain (?) one. Their muffins are out of this world, too.

I must be going about this the wrong way or something. The school is great in all other areas. I have been told very clearly that a 504 is not an option - by the school. But the teaching with food is just too much. The kids are rewarded for anything and everything with candy, except my child who gets a sticker and is not happy. She has a safe food box which contains candies and treats for her, but they don't always use it. They learn math with food. WHY!!! Count and measure with candy, cereal, etc. Read a book with food mentioned? Then the next activity involves eating that food from the book! WHY!!! Classroom projects like the arts and crafts type of stuff involve food. The one hundredth day of school events are all about food for over a week. Yes she got sick from that great event!

Does no one else have these issues at school?

I have the same problem with my son and his school. He's in the first grade this year and everything is about food. If I hadn't have shown up at his Christmas party when I did, he would have been given all sorts of gluteny foods. Even after several lengthy talks with his teacher!

We have a 504 for our daughter (2nd grade, 8 yrs old). This allows the cafeteria to provide her a gluten-free meal every day. I have to say the lunchroom manager is phenomenal. She shops for my daughter's food at a local grocery store and if my daughter dislikes something, she makes a note and knows not to buy that item again.

I think a 504 is a great step so that teachers know exactly what they are dealing with on the first day of school. If she becomes ill, I want a teacher to know that she had a medical condition so they call me immediately if she complains of a stomach ache. I want the substitute teachers to know that she may have to use the bathroom at odd times of the day and it's okay. I want people looking after her. In return, I support the school as much as I possibly can. I remember them at holidays and I send tissue and hand sanitizer in year-round. It's a great relationship.

I wish we had the option of getting a 504 for my son. I was told that it wasn't necessary and that if there was a problem, I would be called. They don't call. I was also told that they can't be bothered with serving a child with "such a severe food allergy" and that I needed to make his lunches and breakfasts to send with him. I don't mind that so much since I've been doing it for my daughter for several years now. The teacher and the classroom candy jar I do have a problem with.

  4. Hi, I'm a military spouse (Army) and I've had Celiac Disease for 7 years. My son has it as well and my daughter is on the gluten-free diet because she has Asperger's. We're in the EFMP program, but not for Celiac Disease. I was told that since there was nothing to "treat", it couldn't be added. It would make travelling a lot easier and yes, I think they should have some consideration for people with severe food allergies. Maybe if enough people complain, something might happen.

I'm in Odenton, which is right in the middle of Annapolis, Baltimore, and DC. I haven't gone to the support group yet; everytime they meet I have had something scheduled that can't be changed. I am glad that I found this forum, I don't feel so alone anymore :)

Where in Fairfax? My parents live in McLean.

    Kate

Odenton is right outside the base from me. I'm on Ft. Meade! Nice to know that there is someone that is so close that is Celiac, too.

  6. I've been playing with my page on Myspace for the last few days. I've been finding a lot of my cousins and friends from school. I was shocked when I got on here and there was 1/2 page since yesterday afternoon.:huh: hmmm....

I'm worried about our President too. Where could she be? Hopefully the bushes she cut didn't get their revenge.

Susan I wish I could rip out my carpet and paint. I hate living in military housing!!!!

Well I have things to do. Talk to you guys later.

  7. If you go on the diet and your symptoms dissapate then there's obviously a problem. Usually when you go on the diet and then you get off it again, the symptoms come back and then there's other things that show up that you didn't realize were there before you got on the diet. The military doctors and not very willing to diagnose celiac or test for it. I was really sick for a long time before I got the dx. The best thing I can say is to find a doctor that will work with you and is willing to test for it.

How long has she been gluten-free, and how old is she? Mine (ADD) has improved by leaps and bounds all the time, and I almost never take the meds (concerta).

That's the problem we have with her current psychiatrist. she hasn't put her on meds, she looks down at the gluten free diet as starving her because she is so picky. It's frustrating.

  9. I was diagnosed with a "mild case" and I can tell you honestly that you have to follow the diet. I tried not to at first and it almost killed me. I still use the toothpaste and shampoos that I usually would have, but I have to be conscious of everything that I injest. I have had severe bone pain, and brain fog, and vitamin deficiencies just having a few crumbs from the butter tub. I don't have DH, and all the other things. All I can tell you is that you need to follow the diet. There will be so much of a difference.
