I had bob's redmill gluten-free oats. 2 times. same reaction both times- cramping- watery yellow D ALL DAY!(sorry for the graphic)
-
Not to add more graphic stuff here. I dunno if I ever had leaky gut, but when I was younger I used to see undigested pasta in my stools!! I told my parents....they didnt believe me.
-
thanks for the responses.
I don't know what it is for sure. I never had a problem with all of this stuff, it just seemed like all of sudden I started getting nausea after eating certain things. I have looked into the SCD, but I think I may look closer and give it a try. I also think I have some wacked out hormones (it could be causing it) but then certain digestive problems and foods can cause the wacked out hormones! haha i have very irregular cycles and fluctuactions with water wieght: there are days where i will wiegh 140 ibs and others 130. I'm 5'6.
As soon as my new health insurace goes through I will be going back to the gyno and primary once again. I was even looking into holistic medicine doctors! just dont have the money for that

Planning ahead is definitly the key. I also pre-think/make ALL of my meals. and if I am in a situation where I wont be able to make something I make sure to find out where I will be able to buy something or order something gluten-free. It is a pain b/c it takes extra time, but it is worth taking the extra time BEFORE the situation arises where your extra tim is spent worrying about what you will eat.i I also always try to stock up on some gluten-free snacks that I can just grab and take with me if I am in a rush. I don't keep too many around b/c I have a tendency to binge on things, but usually one or two things to choose from that I can just grab and go.

O.K, so as of now I definitly know that GLUTEN and SOY are out of the question for me. Nightshades, dairy, corn, potato and a few others I am still experimenting with....staying away from nightshads/dairy the most!!
I started gettting new symptoms about a month ago where fruit/sugar and higher carb things would make me naucious....like wanting to puke naucious!!! I was looking into causes and read about candida. It made sense to me because I bought this new chicken broth a few weeks ago and YEAST was one of the ingredients. I coudnt figure out why I got horrible gas/bloating just from the chicken broth which was labled gluten-free on the web site and no gluten in the ingredients until I read about candida.. I also got the same symptoms form grapes and carrots the worse. OJ is something that I drink....rather drank every morning and now I cant I get nausea
I tried the candida diet for about a week and a half just to experiment and started feeling really good (minus cramping and fatigue in my muscles which I figure partially has to do with lack of potassium which I am already deficient in) Out of frustration of eating nothing but greens and meat, i started adding some grains back in (quinoa and brown rice sit O.K), and then in the past few days some fruit. I started with blueberries....no luck - got nausea and a glutened feeling. today I drank about a qaurter cup of OJ in the morning. I went running about an hour later and had to stop and walk b/c I was so naucious.
I really give up.
I don't know if candida is something that doctors can test for (or know anything about for that matter). I tried the saliva test where you spit in a glass full of water first thing in the morning and it forms clumpy white almost immediatly at the bottom of the glass. I can only imagine what my doctor is going to say when I go for my physical this fall and I tell him MORE foods are bothering me...and he already thinks I'm nuts for going Gluten Freee b/c he thinks it isnt my problem.....this will just make him think that even more!! ugh wahh!

I'm in a financial situation as well. I'm starting college this week, and I am going back on my dad's insurance, but that doesn't mean there won't be bills to go along with the testing. I just don't have the money with the bill I have already.
thanks
no prob. that was actually my situation- I was in college and had insurance issues.....OMG insurance sux!!!!
-
If you have the money to get tested DO IT. I personally never got tested because of my insurance/financial situation 1 1/2 yrs ago. It would be nice to know if I have celiac just for the point of telling my family how strict i need to follow the gluten-free diet. I follow it very strictly now because I find that I get sick from cross contamination, but it's hard getting other people to take me seriously....then of course there are times where even an official diagnosis wouldn't make a differance in anyone's mind.
I did see the G.I doc when I finally got insurance, but he told me just to stay on the diet since I was already gluten free for a few months and it would be pointless to put me through everything to get test (going back on gluten etc..., plus it would probably come back negative)
The only conflict I have right now is with my primary doctor who bellieves I don't have celiac and he still wants me to go back on gluten to get tested. He believes it would only take a week of gluten to cause damage!! yeah right!! and he puts the gluten free diet down, saying I shouldn't have to live the rest of my life worrying about gluten and that there is NOTHING I can eat. I wanted to cry when I left his office because it is such a narrow minded approach-
So if you decide to get tested go to a good doctor, otherwise, after thinking about this and writing.....yeah, I guess in some cases official testing wouldnt make a differance....and like someone already said, there are a LOT of people who are gluten intolerant and dont have celiac. I really hope they have a test for that someday!
Good luck with everything!!

OMG! I went to a small college. I did an article on celiac disease and college students. At my school there were only 2 confirmed celiacs that the food manager knew of. He said that they wouldn't be able to take the meal plan off the contract, but they did have differant meal plan options and made accomodations such as : A sepate toaster/mini fridge away from gluten foods for them to use and they ordered specialty foods and kept them stocked for them.....I also know people who worked in food service at the school and told me about how they accomodated the celiacs by cleaning the grills/ using new cookware, altering recipes etc...
they definitly need to do something to accomodate you!!! My school also required a confiremation letter from the doctor in order to accomodate students, but the accomodations would definitly be met!!!!

I think I'm really missing something here. How is "bogeyman" insulting? It's saying it's something people are worried about. I don't think he's say AT ALL that some people are making things up and don't feel better when they're off gluten. I think he's saying we need to look more at why (is it because they're just paying more attention to what they eat in general?) and why people are doing it without medical indication - but not saying that doing it without medical indication is bad, or means it's all in your head, or anything. And he certainly isn't diminishing what happens to celiacs who eat gluten; it's just that the article isn't about that. Again, I guess it's my background, but I think these are questions we should be asking, and the more we look into things, in general, the better informed we all are. If people never ask why non-celiacs sometimes respond badly to gluten, we'll never find out, you know? And I don't think we can completely dismiss the idea that there may be a couple of people out there who are eating gluten-free who don't need to be because it isn't improving their health to do so. I know someone who decided to go gluten-free to see if it cleared her mind, but it didn't, and she quit before long.
I defintly agree with your view on the article. I actually thought it wasn't that bad the first time I read it through...but I do think he could've wrote it in more of a way that you are writing with the questioning of "why" and then look at the possibilities....

Just thought I would mention if you want to get tested you should be on a diet that contains gluten, otherwise the anibodies wont show up in the bloodwork! I went gluten free BEFORE going to the doctor to get tested...I'm wishing I could re-wind time now!!!!
good luck with everything!

I just went for food allergy testing and I'm allergic to just about everything. I came back positive for beef, pork, turkey, milk, eggs, chocolate, coffee, peaches, apricots. It really does suck!!!!!
how do they test for food allergies??....my friend had some testing done for some allergies and said it involed needles and skin poking...all over the back -eeeek!

I was thnking today.....does anyone else get fed up with trying to explain to people other food issues along with gluten?- so much that you don't even bother to explain after a while? People just don't understand how all these foods that I ate on a regular basis before are bothering me now....I almost feel like typing an explanation up, making copies and carying around with me to give to friends/family etc. instead of having to re-explain myself over and OVER....

(((((((((hugs))))))))))) Wish there was some way to help with this, I don't have as many intolerances as you do but the ones I do have make me frustrated too sometimes. The one I hate the most is soy. It drives me crazy that it is in sooooo much. Sometimes I just give in to wanting something as simple as a ranch dressing on a salad. Like you I suffer for it, say I won't do it again but then sure enough the craving gets to be too much and I slater another salad and suffer again for it. Funny I have no problem with craving gluten but my other intolerances I do slip up on. It is hard and it is just not fair. Lots of us do understand and sympathize.
thank you!

I don't swell like you are talking about, bloating yes. Tomatoes are a nightshade, did you know that? If I ate salsa, I would have diarrhea in 20 minutes flat. The only potato chips I eat are UTZ brand. They do not seem to bother me. Corn chips are out, any flavored potato chips are out.
I too eat chicken breast, veggies, occasionally tuna, or cod. No red meats, no nightshades, no grains. I'm not so sure all the other grains bother me themselves, but I do feel they are cross contaminated with gluten. Some people are super sensitive.
This type of venting is always ok, we have to do it somewhere. Some of us do understand how you feel, totally understand.
Thanks! yes, I'm well aware of what nighshades are, potatoes, peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, and a few others....even paprika bothers me sometimes-ugh. I make sure any grain I eat is labled gluten-free, but i dont eat them often. It's hit or miss with them bothering me...
now my mom thinks that all my problems may be tied to something else...and that I may not even have a gluten intolerance!!! ugh she keeps mentioning H pilori...but I really doubt it. I havent been sick in over a year since going gluten-free!
-
I am curious if anyone else has issues with Maltode xtrin? I get stabbing stomach pains when I have something with it- even when the product says "gluten-free." Thanks
Janie
it may be a corn intolerance...I believe they use corn starch for it sometimes...
-
so is my multi vitamin with iron and calcium worthless? lol I always wondered this since I am against taking pills for calium. I dont eat dairy but drink 2 servings of calcium enhanced OJ everyday.....and then I hear that citrus pulls calcium from the body.....so I pretty much give up....the only deficiency i've had recently was potassium.....and I eat tons of it...but drink a lot of tea...so i figured that is the reason?
-
SOOO.... I was thinking how nice it would be to just be GLUTEN INTOLERANT. I never knew these other foods (dairy, soy, corn, nightshades, carrots, melon,pork...what else??) were also causing me problems.
Small amounts of those foods SEEM to be O.K on occasion, but I'm really getting fed up with a limited diet of veggies, chicken and tuna. The other day I was craving chips and salsa REALLY bad...something I never crave. SO I went and got some gluten-free GMO free tortilla chips and organic salsa. I had a little bit for two days, and now I'm paying the price. I feel bloated/swollen all over and the worse part is the puffiness in my face (mostly around the sinuses.) I also seem to breakout from corn chips/nightshades (even small amounts)...although it really isnt pimples....more like red rash type of thing. I feel so disgusted I cant even look at my face in the mirror not to mention I get major brain fog/irritablilty, so sorry if I'm not making complete sense! ugh! there's just a list of symptoms....I dont feel liek going on...
It's wierd because sometimes these foods don't cause me a problem....but I think it's because I've been sneaking them in my diet more latley...mostly out of frustration with not being able to eat so many things...so i just say "well it wont bother me" but a little bit here and there adds up. And it seems like even though these foods make me feel like crap, I'll still reach for them thinking "well, I already don't feel good so why not." I never used to be like this before....this whole thing is making me realy depressed. I just wish I had a "NORMAL" body.
also curious: does anyone else get swelling from corn or nighshades?? its mostly like a water retention thing for me....but not quite....just wierd to describe....but enough to make me not want to wear my normal clothes...
thanks for letting me vent here....nobody understands me anymore lately!!
-
hang in there. it does get better. When I first started the diet my immediate symptoms went away, but then I started feeling worse...very tired, wierd bm's, constipation off and on...etc.. It was kind of a up and down battle until my body evened out. I think its like a shock to the body immediatly removing something we've been eating for so long...kinda like quiting cigarettes cold turkey.
I have been gluten free exactly a year and I am definitly feeling MUCH better and feel more on track. it took about 6 months for things to start to even out...but everyone is differant.

I was thinking to myself today....
I love watching shows on the travel channel like Bizzare Foods and No Reservations and often think how much I would love a job like that....travel, learn, eat and host a show!
Wouldn't it be awesome to have a show where the host travels all over the world to discover and taste gluten free dishes ?( and other allergens/ect)- meet differant people, learn about differant stories..ect..ect??? hmmmm.....
I really want to travel and feel like diet restrictions just make it more difficult (although not impossible). My real goal is to travel and perform music. Which I am already doing, but I want to tour and be on the road for extended periods of time. Aside from gluten intolerance I also am very health consious and run/workout nearly everyday....that would be another thing that would make it more difficult with traveling. Not that finding a place to run is hard...but finding places to shower ect afterwards lol... sometimes my lifestyle seems impossible for the road, but I know I can make it work out somehow.
anyways....yeah....hosting a show would be freakin' awesome!!!!!

Have you tried plain ketchup? Plain vinegar? Plain mustard? If not, try those first - see if you're sensitive. Then make your own BBQ sauce. It's easy. I can post a recepie later or you can try an online site like epicurious dot com.
the last time a tried ketchup it bothered me, but that was ayear ago. plain vinegar as long as its not balsamic I'm fine with, I dunno about mustard, I never use it but i could give it a try. I know I'm sensitive to tomatoes, but it doesnt happen all the time...sometimes I cant stand my body!! lol
thanks!!!
-
O.K I know that kraft will clearly label wheat, rye, barley...but is there anyone who has had a reaction to thier bbq sauce??? I have been staying away from sauces for about a year and decided to try it again yesterday...well I had cramping and D today...I never get D anymore unless I''m glutened or some other irritant... That was the only thing differant I had yesterday and i checked all the ingredients.
I'm just frustrated b/c it seems the only thing that works for me is a plain bland diet. Even using pure spices other than pepper gives me bad gas and bloating
-
I have had a horrible reaction to gluten-free oats. Not to be too descriptive, but basically the whole day after was cramping and yellow D non stop....

"we advise everyone to avoid wheat grass if you are gluten free or wheat free just so we don't add to any confusion."
Just thought I'd add : then why label the product gluten-free??? AHHH!!! lol

SOOOOOO. I was really excited when I saw these hard candies by "Yummy Earth." The back says "gluten free, wheat free, GMO free ..etc.. etc"
I was eating them and then looked at the ingredients and the bottom of the list that says after natural flavors, "May contain organic wheat grass". I looked on the web site and found out what they had to say since I was shocked and confused....
has anyone ate these before???? I havent had a reaction...at least as far as I know now

10. Does Organic Wheat Grass Juice have gluten in it?
We have tested for gluten at the University of Nebraska. There is no gluten in the organic wheat grass juice
11. Organic Wheat Grass:
YummyEarth used organic wheat grass because it was a great gluten and wheat free way to achieve the color greenheat grass (we first
tested the wheat grass at the University of Nebraska), but it caused too much confusion amongst our food sensitive fans, so we
stopped using it in the flavors below and we labeled all the rest of the product that had wheat grass "may contain wheat grass" so
people could make up their own minds whether to eat these flavors. I would not feed something to my wheat-anaphylactic son that even
had the word "wheat" in the name - so surely that was a miscalculation on our part and a lesson learned as parents and manufacturers;
of course, nobody reported getting sick because there was not gluten or wheat in the wheat grass, but it was just too confusing to all
and we advise everyone to avoid wheat grass if you are gluten free or wheat free just so we don't add to any confusion.

this happened to me after going gluten-free...it went away after a few months though
