o.k so I bought a bag, had no reactions I normally react to things like this if they have gluten. Like cheetos for example...OMG, can't have those! haha
-
thanks. I kinda figured resturants get those questions a lot....theres just always that fear that they'll have no clue, even though I know its most likely not the case.
yeah the place I want to call has a menu online and pretty much the only thing I would feel somewhat safe ordering is the broiled haddock. all the meals come with salad and baked potato. but I figure besides the salad , everything else in the meal shouldn't be a problem if i order it w/o seasonings. The fish says "lemon pepper, or cajun", but dont really want to take the risk with that haha. I could get grilled chicken, but I dont trust grilling when everything they cook says "marinated, seasoned".

Sooooo, I feel wierd calling resturants ahead a time to ask about food preparation and if they could accomodate me. I've never actually called any ressturants and havent even really ate out in a year since I found I was gluten intolerant. does anyone else feel awkard calling ahead of time? I never know what to say....
and then I keep telling myself "just call what are they going to do, bite my head off?" lol it seems either hit or miss with people who understand the whole gluten thing...but lately I feel people are becoming more aware. I have no doubt, another 10 years things will be easier....I'm doing all I can to inform people about this...accept my fear of calling resturants doesn't help!!!

I havent had a prob with rice chex. but if I eat way too many its similar to a glutening. same with any grain for me. I just feel better away from them. I eat them only occasionally.
-
I believe Tops/Giant stores only carries this brand, but does anyone know if the tortilla chips are gluten free??? The web site says they do have gluten-free labels, but I've never seen it on thier products The chips are on sale for $1.69 a bag right now and they have the blue corn chips!!! its killing me not to know if they ar eGF. I may just call them....
-
I believe this resturant is only near Buffalio NY, but has anyone ever been there? had any luck?
-
some products contain more gluten than others. pure whole wheat bread has much more gluten than white bread. Subway doesnt have real whole wheat bread even though they have "wheat bread" options....i know white bread never really bothered me as much eirther. but I did get worse heart burn from it, just not as much gas/d/bloating as compared to white bread....
..hope this helps...

OMG! I cant eat that tuna, I get REALLY naucious and I think it tastes horrible.
It doesnt have gluten in it, but it does have soy. and actually, since I dont eat soy anymore, all i taste when I eat it is soy!!!!.
Try to look for tuna that is packed in nothing but WATER. I know wegmans makes it, not sure about some other brands. It seems everyone packs it in vegatable broth (AKA SOY!!!! BLAH!). I just had wegamns yellowfin tuna packed in water today- so much better! you taste nothing but FISH, the way it should be.
sorry, I'm kinda ranting cuz the whole soy thing angers me lol. I'm so against soy for so many reasons.

well I suggested to my mom that I could make something at my apt. and she doesnt like the idea and still wants to go out to eat-lol. A friend suggested to a me a coffee shop in the town that I may be able to eat at. I looked at thier menu online and its basically salads and sandwiches. so I e-mailed them about the salads. its a privately owned place and the person who owns it went to culunary school....so maybe.....
if not. I saw grilles at wal mart for $9, I was thinking of buying one and just grilling chicken like you mentioned above sounds way more fun to me!

this is so awesome. I'll have to try this. has anyone heard about the new gluten-free store they are building in bufffalo?
also, does anyone from this area know any resturants in the dunkirk/fredonia area that understand gluten-free?? I DONT! lol

I understand where you are coming from, but it sounds like a great idea just to have dinner at your place. Since none of the restraunts you mention tend to have any food you can eat. And no, it is not wierd to make dinner even if you are the one graduating. Tell your ma about it so she can bring something that she has made, or she may even want to make dinner and bring it all her self, seeing that you are the one graduating. I don't know your ma so you would know how she would be. If you want to make dinner for starters, how about a salad, steak, baked potato. Just to give you an idea. Congrats on your graduation!
thanks! yeah. my mom still hasnt grasped the whole CC thing. I went over there for mothers day yeterday and couldn't eat the BBQ chicken my brother made b/c the sauce had wheat in it and he put the chicken on a baking tray that has been used to bake cookies with for years... They said "we can just wash he BBQ sauce off for you, theres not that much in there." I didnt get upset b/c I just assumed somehting like this would happen and brought my own noodle salad to eat. My family inderstands gluten-free but not CC...its just one of those things that will take forever for them to comprhend..if they ever do. but I dont bother them with it b/c I dont like causing stress or making people go out of the way for me. I just rather enjoy company and being happy rather than worrying about food....my family is based around food all the time lol
anyways...I'm just rambling...

SO my college graduation is next saturday and my mom is coming out. She's wants to go out to eat afterwards, but there is really nowhere in this town I can eat out at...and nowhere under 30 mins away that will cater to gluten-free.
it's basically all fast food places with applebees, denny's being the only real sit down places and some locally run resturants that are really expensive (which might cater gluten-free) but to me its not even worth it b/c of price (like $20 meals!) and the risk of not feeling well. Plus they require reservations- blah! we definitly cant afford that...
I thought it would be better if I just made a nice dinner for my mom, but I dunno if that seems wierd (since I am the one graduating) but I really like cooking for other people...so i dunno...It would be nice to go out to eat, but like I said its not worth it. And I have talked to several resturants in the town before- they all have heard of gluten, but really dont understand it....just not worth the risk for me....

So I stay away from soy as much as possible. Not only because it causes me digestive problems, mostly bloating and gas, but also because the whole "soy is healthy" thing really angers me. Don't get me wrong, I am a person who used to drink soymilk everyday! - if only I knew I was killing myself! and then add in the whole thing with companies like Monsanto...yeah, I'm not even going to get started...
but my question is:
for those of you who cant tolerate soy or can only tolerate small amounts, is soybean oil just as bad as say soy licithin (sorry spelling) or soy protien for you? I'm not talking using it for frying, but just the amount that is found in almost everything it seems, like mayo, dressings, etc...
I've been buying wegmans tuna that is packed in nothing but water b/c all other tuna's are packed in vegatable broth AKA SOY- GGRR! well, a friend gave me some canned foods last week and in it was tuna-the stuff with nasty veggy broth. I thought, ok, well, I'll try it....OMG all I tasted when I ate it was soy!!!! so gross!!!!! and then my stomach blew up like a balloon and I woke up the next day with a puffy face and water retention. NOt to mention I was naucous the whole day I ate it its like PMS. everytime I have soy!!! I noticed that hellmans mayo is bothering me to....I normally dont eat this stuff, but on occasion when I make something for family, like today I made noodle salad to bring to my mom's tomarrow. I tried a little while making it and I feel like a soy reaction is coming on again, the only soy in it is the soybean oil in the mayo
do they sell mayo w/o soy??? I dont even buy mayo for myself unless I'm cooking for others....I'm on a whole food siet for the most part...
sorry...I'm rambling on....and on....I'm just frustrated with this world and its food that is all artificial, GMO.... and we are cultivating and harvesting grains and things we werent even designed to digest!!!!! UGH!!!!!! and its so hard to get away from it. you think you are doing something healthy by eating lotss of fruits and veggies, only to find out they are GMO or sprayed with crap, coated in whatever, and soaking up unnatural subtances from the environment they grow in thanks to everything being polluted. I wonder if anything is truly organic anymore? even if it says "organic"....
ok I'm done...I sware

I noticed some problems with some of their drinks so now I stick to plain 100% OJ.
yeah. thats what I got when I went to the store today. accept I get the kind with calcium since I can't eat dairy/soy and really cant afford products like hemp or rice milk right now...

I found this on a celiac support site:
"Per email: "We're happy to tell you-- all Tropicana products that are 100% juice are gluten free. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that gluten is not present in products that are less than 100% juice.
You can easily determine if a Tropicana product is 100% juice by looking for the Nutrition Facts Panel on the package; the percentage of juice is located just above that panel." Michael, Tropicana Consumer Response"
I have been drinking the Trop 50 OJ by them and its not 100% juice. has anyone had a problem with this? It seems that when I drink it it sits in my stomach foreverr... but I dont have any other symptoms, at least not that I know of
-
I was so excited about this until I saw "soy flour" in the chocolate and strawberry ones
-
what about people with gluten intolerance and not celiac?

I get puffy fingers, neck, torso, and sometimes feet. It can get really bad. Many years ago it was so bad my skin hurt because it was so tight. I haven't noticed a direct relation to salt...for me it's more related to gluten and sugar consumption. It definitely gets bad if I eat wheat bread. People talk about getting bloated belly from gluten, but for me I get an entire bloated body! It's freaky because my stomach, hands, and chin will blow up like a balloon just minutes after eating. I can grow 2 pants sizes in 30 seconds. Freaky! And it takes awhile for it to go away. I hate it. Doctors ignore me when I tell them about it, but I try to control it by watching what I eat. After I went 100% gluten-free, I was able to wear some rings that I haven't worn in years. It was great! Lately I've been having problems with it again, though. I think it's either too much sugar or I'm sensitive to milk. Not sure which, though.
OMG I get the thing where my skin hurts.....i was wondering always if this is normal with edema?? It actaully gets so bad that if I press down anywhere on my body...mostly around my mid section/sides/back....it feels like bruising!!! then I can feel the same bruising feeling in my muscles. I have more muscle than fat and I know muscle retains more water.....which really sucks!!....anyone else have this problem? UGH!
-
I was always puffy on gluten. Now that I'm gluten free I notice even more when I gain water wieght. I actaully think it has gotten worse gluten-free, but thats because it isn't a constant thing and I actually notice it now.
Although a low sodium diet can help some people. I have found that can make my water retention worse. I'm 23 and I am also a runner. I've been having horirible hormone fluctuations throughout the month which cause water rentention....I can even feel it in my vocal chords- NOT fun when you are a singer-its rather debilitating. But anyways. For a while I was keeping my sodium under 500 Mg a day....it helped at first, but then it seemed to be doing nothing. I noticed if I purposely ate something salty (not extremely salty) I would feel better. When I keep my sodium between 800 mg and 1500 a day I seem to feel best.
It really is an individual thing. I also know too much wate ris bad for me..there are times where i would feel light headed when I drink water all day on a low sodium diet. I normally have problems with feeling dizzy, but that just makes it worse.
best of luck to you. things will get better!

Does anyone else react worse days after a glutening?.....
So I had a small screw up on Saturday night. I was out and had a few drinks, which I know where gluten free b/c its what I always drink...plus I brought them with me!
Later on I had some bagged chips from the bar, which I have also had before with no problem. I checked the ingredients and everything to make sure.
I never eat chips b/c I try to avoid nightshades and unhealthy foods alltogether...but I splurge on occasion usually with no problems...
Well, out of supidity one of my friends offered me some BBQ chips. Of course since I was drinking I didnt think and just reached in and took one...and then thought "oh crap"....checked the ingredients and there it was "barley"....I didnt even read anymore...I only had one chip and thought well, ok, it wont be that bad...
I felt kinda naucious on and off that night, but nothing I couldnt handle... I figured it was just the chips and drinking in general....
I woke up on sunday with lack of sleep so I wasnt feeling that great b/c of that. I had a few extra trips to the bathroom and one case of D, but it wasnt a bad as I thought.....then Monday came and I started feeling super fatigued, gassy (foul smelling), and even woke up with a muscle pulled in my back. My sinuses started acting up and I got a headace..so I took IB profin and went to bed early last night....slept for 10 hours, woke up today and felt like a train ran me over...
Pretty much every muscle in my body is aching and IB profin is the only thing helping me...its 800mg and I'm still feeling pain....I've also been chilled on and off and get fatigued very fast...especially if I eat something....so I've been resting all day....
I didnt go to school, couldnt even think about working out. I'm also on day 40 of my menstrual cycle with still no period...so I cant tell if my problems are gluten or that....my cycle is so messed up and it has often been leaving me feeling sick. actually, on sunday, my water retnetion got so bad that it hurt to press my skin...then I felt it hurting my muscles...so maybe my muscle aching is from that...
So I'm thinking the way I feel is a combination of everything...I'm just wondering if it was the nightshades or gluten that bothered me more...or maybe I have just been overly stressed...dont you love going through these thought proccesses???
All I know is no more white potatoes for me...
sorry if my writing is all jumbled...I'm also having "brain fog" cant think straight!!! so frustrating!
-
I have to avoid the original flavor Terra chips and all of the flavored chips because of the umbelliferous vegetables/herbs (parsnips, celery, dill, parsley), but I can handle the plain sweet potato, sweet potato and beets, "red, stripes, & blues" and the plain blue potato chips. There are VERY few processed foods that my digestive system can tolerate... so I think they're pretty safe!
I have been o.k. with the sweet potato chips as well. I always avoid snacks that have flavorings and spices...for some reason spices either give me heartburn or horrible G.

I wish, with every every everything I have that there were a product that you can spray on cooking utensils and it will turn a bright color of there is gluten on it.
You know, like they do on CSI when they search for blood.
**deeep sigh**
I do not like how the only way an object can be tested to make sure it's absolutely gluten free is to wait and see what happens when the food goes down the throat.
Just sayin'
oh man...if they had that i would spray it all over my mom's apartment just to prove to her there is gluten all over that place! lol I feel like crap and get super bloated everytime I go there...

Since she already seems to be somewhat familiar with the gluten free life perhaps she wouldn't be opposed to reading some literature on the harms of cross contamination. Maybe if you pop over there for a nice one on one with her you can try to explain. I think e-mails are tricky and I wouldn't respond to her e-mail with an e-mail. You never know how people are going to interpret what you have to say. I don't know how many times I've gotten into little arguments with my mother because she thought I was being rude or snippy in an e-mail!
I agree with this. E-mailing is a great source of frustration for me. I would call her or talk to her in person. The way she wrote the e-mail, there is no way of telling of she intended it to be. You could take it as eith "look, I told ya you could've ate it" or "here's the ingredients, just thought you'd like to know maybe for next time." god I hate e-mail...lol
Anyway, i wouldnt think to far into it. I often think about the little situations like this that i have been in and then later on think how rediculous it is -the emotions that can get worked up over something as small as food. (and I come from a Italain family that is revolved around food!)
If it were me I would just brush it off, move on, and think of things that could help make these situations easier in the future (the thoughts and ideas here were really good!)

Does anyone else get cramping and D/not feeling so great/lack of energy when they rely on processed (gluten-free ) foods? ....assuming there are no other allergens in those foods!
It bugs me b/c I've been doing whole foods for so long, whenever I switch over to processed again..even gradually....I start getting the D and gluten-like symptoms sneaking back after a few days-to a week.
I know processed foods are harder to digest, but it really makes me wonder if my problem isnt really just gluten, and just maybe all PROCCESSED FOODS and specific carbohydrates. My reaction isnt anywhere near as bad as when I have processed gluten foods, but I wonder if I kept it up for an extended period of time if I would just go back to feeling like my gluten days...NOT THAT I'M TRYING THAT ANYTIME SOON!
It's wierd b/c sometimes eating the proccessed foods (like bread) makes me feel really good for a couple days...I'll have more energy and feel more happy all around...but then its like I crash after a few days...
It must just be the emotional need for these types of foods that create that "good" feeling. This country has created such a reliance on proccessed foods....to me they are comfort foods, it reminds me of growing up and what I always ate..a part of me I dont want to let go....but at the same time, how comforting is it to have these symptoms?
anyways...I'd go on and on....just some thoughts...
thanks!

I amnot even as sensitive as a lot of people on here but I have reacted to rice chex (the new gluten-free ones) and bushes baked beans.... I normally dont have a prob with plain unprocced rice, but legumes do bother me, so not sure if its CC or not. But processsed foods in general make me feel like crap. And I feel for you..... I really wish everyone still ate like cavemen and that this world didnt rely on processed food!!! ugh!
