  1. If ALL of the tests for Celiac come back negative, she could still have it. I know this stinks, but in children under 6 the tests are extremely unreliable.

If it were me, I would keep her on gluten and get the biopsy. If things come back positive, well there is no question what you must do.

But if they all come up negative, I would do a 3 month trial of gluten free diet to see what happens. THE PROOF IS ALWAYS IN THE DIET!! Not the lab tests.

And yes, I would get everyone tested (including genetic tests).

If she has endocrinolgical issues they often resolve on a gluten free diet (if that is her problem).

  2. I will agree with Tim. The first week can be deceptive. Likely a lot of water weight and some could easily come back. From here on out, you should not lose more than 1-2 pounds a week. If you do, then add a few more carbs in (although 140 carbs a day is NOWHERE near Atkins, nor too restrictive).

I find that if I eat more than 30 carbs at one sitting, my blood sugar spikes. So this diet is actually better for your pancreas and blood sugar control.

    Keep us posted.

  3. You need a good SCD cookbook. I bought three of them. Some great recipes. For GREAT calories, make some SCD legal muffins. They are made with almond flour and are quite yummy. My whole family loves them.

Yes, red meat typically has more fat. But try to buy organic, free range and grass fed if you can.

    Choose fatty fish like salmon.

  4. First of all Welcome.

You are CELIAC based on the bloodwork alone. It is EXTREMELY rare to have a false positive and some say it isnt possible at all. All positives are positive.

You have symptoms and you have positive labs.

Here is the rub. Even when you think you do not react to gluten, your body is waging a horrible war inside of you. If you keep eating gluten and allow this internal war to continue, there will be consequences. The consequences of untreated Celiac (gluten free diet) are certain Cancers, some untreatable, Diabetes type 1 and 2, and many other auto-immune diseases like Hashimoto's (which you may already have considering your TSH).

Do you really want to risk all of those to eat gluten?

If you are the type that needs a GOLD STANDARD diagnosis, then keep eating gluten and get the endoscopy. However, keep this in mind: There are MANY false negatives with endoscopy. If they do not biopsy the spots with damage (and damage can be spotty), then they will say you do not have Celiac. So you will go on your merry way eating gluten only to be diagnosed later when they are treating you for lymphoma (happens to a lot of people sadly) for instance.

DO GET GENETIC TESTING, but here, keep in mind that even if you do not have the specific U.S. recognized Celiac genes, that you can STILL have it. Europe and other countries have identified 7 genes related to Celiac. But as usual the U.S. lags behind.

Get a good doctor to work with you on your thyroid. You are HYPOTHYROID. Get antibodies tested for thyroid. YOU NEED TO ADDRESS THIS!

When ALL is said and done, only YOU can decide if you are going to try to be as healthy as you can (not your doctors). A trial of a GLUTEN FREE diet is in order regardless of what any other tests reveal. You have POSITIVE bloodwork. As soon as the endoscopy is done, go GLUTEN FREE!!

  5. Some people with Celiac disease show no improvement on the gluten-free diet. The condition is called unresponsive celiac disease. The most common reason for poor response is that small amounts of gluten are still present in the diet. Or the damage can also be so severe that it may not heal very well.

Does she eat out? This could be a major source of gluten (even while ordering seemingly gluten-free foods). For instance I have learned some restaurants blanch veggies in pasta water.

Also to facilitate healing, look into Aloe Juice (George's is tasteless and gluten-free as I called), Seacure or Intestive( 4-6 capsules daily) along with Biotin (8-10 mg daily), probiotics (mostly acidophilus but some bifidus too) and MSM. Glutamine if she does not have neuro. issues related to Celiac. These supplements help heal the digestive tract.

But as Ursa says, she should also get rid of soy and dairy ASAP! And prepare all of her meals from home for awhile. Fresh foods: Meats, veggies, fruits, nuts, potato, rice, etc. Simple foods with NO additives in them. Call manufacturers to make sure gluten-free status if uncertain.
