ARCHIVED Gluten Free Gift Basket Denver CO
LDJofDenver posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Just wanted to share, we know how we celiacs rarely get "safe" holiday gift baskets. My brother sent me the most beautiful GLUTEN FREE Gift Basket! Everything in it gluten-free and/or certified gluten-free. From Biscuits in a Basket -- in Denver CO area. Local, small company, that does one beautiful job. And gets the whole celiac gluten free thing... -
ARCHIVED Osteopenia A Year And A Half After gluten-free
LDJofDenver replied to CajunChic's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I too have osteopenia, not uncommon for celiacs. I agree seeing endocrinologist is key. Mine had me on prescription level Vitamin D for two years. Vitamin D promotes calcium absorption, among other things (so even if you're taking calcium it may not be absorbed properly if your Vit D is low). My endocrinologist looked at things at a much more finite level... -
ARCHIVED First Thanksgiving Since Diagnosis...feeling Anxious
LDJofDenver replied to icelandgirl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I hope everything went well and you suffered no ill effects. We all (celiacs) experience those anxious feelings when we're going to someone else's home to eat. I cook Thanksgiving so I am in control of all of it, gluten free stuffing and gravy, every seasoning, handling, etc. I have a very dear friend who had us over this summer for bbq and was trying... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Fruitcake!
LDJofDenver posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yes, Virginia, there IS a Santa Claus -- at least for me and other celiacs who love their fruitcake. I was delighted to discover that Old Cavendish makes a certified gluten free fruitcake (yes, certified!). Got mine last week and it is to die for. (my husband is really happy for me because now he can enjoy his fruitcake and not have me staring daggers of... -
Ataxia as adult celiac. Greetings. I had pretty significant "gluten ataxia" (from what I understand the antibodies that attack the small intestine also attack specific type of cells in the cerebellum - I'm not a medical person, I'm sure you can google this and get some info). I was not diagnosed with Celiac Disease until in my 50s. Among other problems...

ARCHIVED Diagnosed, Now Do I Worry About Other Stuff?
LDJofDenver replied to veryami1's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You may be able to have the endoscopy without adding gluten back, especially since you've only been gluten free for a month (my endoscopy was a couple months after going gluten-free and still showed extreme damage and confirmed celiac disease) - contact a G.I. doctor and see what they have to say about it. Also, given all the vitamin deficiencies we celiacs... -

LDJofDenver replied to katiehammond's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
DO NOT DESPAIR! There's a whole wonderful gluten free world out there. 14 yrs ago when my son was diagnosed we had to order everything via internet. Now there is an abundance of gluten free foods in the mainstream. Important article for you to read: Celiac Disease is a disability and recent ruling huge impact on Celiac students with meal plans Open... -
ARCHIVED Going To Visit Family - Tips Anyone?
LDJofDenver replied to CaliSparrow's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
All good advice above. I always try to take as much of it into my own hands as possible, sometimes I will eat ahead of time - after all, it's really the company I'm interested in and not the food. I know what you mean about hurting feelings, and not get understanding on the other side (like your favorite auntie who says: "oh a little won't hurt you..." ... -
ARCHIVED Am Not Getting Better
LDJofDenver replied to jamesM11's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'd like to suggest that (even though you wipe everything down that comes into contact with gluten) you get in the habit of NEVER putting any of your food down on a counter -- instead grab a plate, or paper plate, or piece of wax paper, etc. It's a good habit to get into and adds a pretty foolproof layer of protection in your food handling. -
ARCHIVED Found Fruitcake!
LDJofDenver posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just had to share this recent find. Since my celiac diagnosis 4 years ago I have pined away at holiday time for a piece of fruitcake. While this fruitcake is not certified gluten free (I am VERY sensitive), I spoke to the owner about their handling, separation and baking process for the gluten-free version of their fruitcakes. The answers satisfied me enough... -
ARCHIVED Researcher says proposed gluten-free standards are sound - Florida Times-Union (blog)
LDJofDenver replied to Scott Adams's topic in Publications & Publicity
FDA needs all of our feedback: ppm is only half the battle the other is what will the FDA allow folks to print on their labels (should NOT be allowed to state gluten free on front product label, IMHO, if says 'processed in facility that also processes wheat' UNLESS there is testing) Was announced past week that the FDA will await more comments before... -
ARCHIVED FDA Open For Comments
LDJofDenver posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Was announced past week that the FDA will await more comments before finalizing regs on gluten free food labeling. One last chance to let them know your experience and what needs to be done to protect people with Celiac Disease. I submitted comment that if it were peanuts, they would not allow a product to state "Peanut Free" on the label, if on the... -

ARCHIVED Antibodies?
LDJofDenver replied to confused mom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm not a medical person, but my G.I. doc said that, aside for it being confirmation of celiac disease, that they are also looking for certain markers and baselines, plus examining for esophageal damage that may have resulted from GERD (many celiacs also suffer from this), etc. You should ask the GI doc to elaborate. It (the biopsy) may also be an... -
ARCHIVED Feeling Like An Outcast
LDJofDenver replied to Iluvaceliac's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
When I'm going to something where food is involved (not a restaurant), I always make a gluten free dish to contribute and take my portion out of the dish before putting it out for the rest. If it's a restaurant, I call ahead and talk to chef or manager and discuss possibilities. They are often sympathetic and helpful (some more than others) -- there have... -
ARCHIVED Rudi's gluten-free Bread Costco
LDJofDenver posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Although I have to say that, for packing a sandwich, Udi's is my favorite -- Rudi's gluten free breads are pretty darn good, too. Much to my delight our local Costco is carrying Rudi's gluten-free bread! (this is the Costco between Hampden & Oxford, on Santa Fe - Denver CO) We all know how costly our breads are, and this is a good savings, you... -
ARCHIVED Friend In Denial
LDJofDenver replied to domesticactivist's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Boy that's a tough situation. Perhaps an educational approach? Maybe you could get online and find some info about the damage done when celiac disease goes untreated, and print some articles out to share. It would be great if the children could be diagnosed young, if they have it. Think of the years and decades of damage they could be spared. T The... -
ARCHIVED Question About Doctor's Recommendations
LDJofDenver replied to joerockstar's topic in Doctors
And, by the way, of course her blood work would come back negative if she has not been eating gluten! It's scary sometimes, what we have to endure to finally get a diagnosis. I guess the most important message is to learn to be your own advocate. -
There are several made in the US and I'm not crazy about any of them, though I'll break down and have one anyway, once in a while. You might see if your Liquor Stores can order in Green's. I'd read that it was #1 gluten free beer in U.K. It is Belgian, and there are pale ales as well as a wonderful dark beer. I think they are far superior to any of...

ARCHIVED Amazing New I-Phone App!
LDJofDenver replied to Mama Melissa's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Does anyone have the gluten free shopping app from Triumph Dining? I have "Is That Gluten Free" but it could be more extensive. The Triumph app is a bit pricey, so hoping to get some feedback from someone who has it before I decide to spring for it. -

ARCHIVED It's Official I Had My Endo And Colonoscopy Today!
LDJofDenver replied to okieinalaska's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
And, you're one of the lucky ones. There's no doubt (no negative or borderline blood work, etc.). You know definitively what you've got and you know what you've got to do. Honestly, there's something to be said for knowing. For me, it was a relief after years (OK, decades) of NOT knowing what the heck was wrong with me. Here's to your healing! Hip... -
ARCHIVED Biopsy Questions!
LDJofDenver replied to Booseebean's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It doesn't hurt, and barely felt putting in the IV and whammo, you're out. You most likely won't even know it's been done! You'll be on your way out before you think they even started. My primary care doc said I didn't need an endoscopy because my blood work was positive for celiac. However, my GI doc strongly disagreed. She said there are many reasons... -
ARCHIVED Diagnosed 2 Years Ago Only By Blood Test, Could It Be False?
LDJofDenver replied to HS7474's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Have your doctors done any follow up blood tests to see that your antibody levels are coming down? If they're not, you're still ingesting gluten, from somewhere (be it the gum, an old toaster, shared kitchen counter space, medications, or products that aren't safe). I'm not a medical person but I've never heard of getting a false positive. False negatives...
