Okay, I definitely am gluten and casein intolerant, but strange symptoms have been showing up lately that don't occur ___ amount of time after eating food, but instead, show up whenever. I'm wondering if I have a problem with candida overgrowth. My idiot doctor and his rude wife (who is the receptionist) blew me off ("candida is a fungus. It can't do this stuff. Don't believe what you read on the internet"), and I want to handle this problem myself.
Has anyone tried Symbion Probiotics? I heard that it might be good, and helps a lot of people feel better within days or weeks, supposedly. I can't swallow pills though... is there a way to break it into powder and just have that instead?
Any advice?

I will be traveling to Key West soon. Does anyone know of any restaurants there that have gluten free menus?

Have you checked your shampoo, soap, toothpaste, and any meds you take including over the counter? It does take some time. The first 6 weeks were the toughest.

I somehow got glutened about 5 days ago. Within a few hours I had explosive diarhea. That lasted for hours and ever since my stomach has been a mess. It feels raw and on fire. I have been eating soft cooked foods and it is a little better but I am miserable. What do you do when this happens to you?

Like you, I had never heard of Celiac Disease until my doctor finally tested me. I had been ill for years (I am 50).
I was diagnosed 15 months ago and I feel like I am 20. I had migraines, depression, brain fog, fatigue, irritability, terrible PMS, and stomach aches. Within 2 weeks of going gluten free my symptoms started going away. A gluten free diet really isn't hard. Even though there are many processed gluten free products, try to stay away from them while you are healing. I ate (and still do) meats, vegetables, and fruit. I also noticed for the first 6 months or so my body did much better with cooked vegetables. It has been 15 months and I have not had one migraine. Good luck to you.

My GI checks my levels every 6 months. However this last time my number was down to 4. So he said he doesnt need to see me unless I start having problems. Good luck to you.

That is great news! My gastroenterologist says he believes most people diagnosed with fybromyalgia would test positive for Celiac Disease. My story is about depression. I had been on antidepressants and antianxiety meds for 13 years. I have been gluten free since October 2008 and am medicine free. No more depression. No more anxiety. Life is good. I never want that poison (gluten) in my body ever again.

I was on anti-depressants and anti-anxiety meds for years and years. My celiac disease affected my brain more than any other part of my body. I had severe migraines (hospitalized because of them), constant brain fog, and of course the depression and anxiety I was being treated for. Let me just say this, after 13 months of a gluten free diet I am no longer on my meds, have no headaches whatsoever, and no brain fog. By the way, I am 50 years young. Make sure your meds are gluten free. Have your pharmacist contact the manufacturers. Don't forget to check your toothpaste, shampoo, anything that can touch your lips. Best of luck to you, but please please please be careful about stopping your meds. This can wreak havoc on your brain. Take care of yourself.

Please don't do the challenge. You will get really sick. And if he has diagnosed you you shouldn't have to do that. He will be able to tell by your numbers from your bloodwork. And as for IBS I think all Celiac Patients could be diagnosed with that. Our small bowel is irritated, therefore IBS. Good luck to you. The gluten free diet really isn't hard if you make up your mind to follow it. The first few months are the hardest as you will still feel crummy during that time. But once you feel better you won't want that poison ever again.

My gastroenterologist said all products must be gluten free. You can call any manufacturer and they will know if their products are gluten free. I used to use very expensive skin products but now use Burts Bee products. They are wonderful, and gluten free. If it can touch your lips it can contaminate you. Make sure you check ALL meds. If you are prescribed any meds your pharmacist can call to make sure they are gluten free. They may not like doing it but that is part of their job. I have followed all suggestions my GI gave me and in 13 months my TGG level went from 63 to 4. Yes that's right a 4. 0-19 is normal. It really does get easier. Good luck to you.

I have been gluten free for 13 months now and feel fabulous but my bowel movements are not always "normal". My first advice is GET RID OF THE OATMEAL. I am very surprised your doctor says they are ok. Because oats and wheat are usually grown in the same fields it is almost impossible for them to be gluten free. You need to add some veggies to your diet. Try broccoli, cauliflower, etc. This will help with your problem. Good luck to you.

My gastro says he only does one biopsy. The exception to that would be if my bloodwork would come back high. He does check my blood every 6 months. By the way I got my tgg down to 4 in 1 year. 0-19 is normal.

In my book it sounds like celiac to me. Let's face it, most people know nothing about celiac disease including doctors and nurses. As for family and friends celiac disease is very confusing to them. They think you can go on this diet for a while then everything heals and you can eat gluten again. I was diagnosed about 11 months ago. I had both genes and no villi but I am 50 years old and have struggled all 50 years. I don't know how long you have been struggling but maybe your case was caught before the villi were destroyed. And as for the blood tests alot of people test negative. I dont even discuss my celiac disease diet with family and friends as they just don't get it. My sister-in-law has a PHD in nursing and she asked me if I can eat whole grain bread!! Just stick to a gluten free diet and you will get better. Find a gastroenterologist that you can form a good relationship with. To heck with what people think or say. Why don't you just tell your family and friends you have been diagnosed with celiac disease. Maybe that will help. Good luck to you.

I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease a year ago by bloodwork and biopsy. I was very ill. I could hardly function with daily activities. Finally I found an excellent family physician that tested me through bloodwork. He sent me to a very good gastroenterologist. Well to make a long story short I now feel like a million bucks. One year ago my tgg level was 63. Today it is at 4. That's right I said 4. I have not cheated once in the year I have been gluten free. And I never will. I was one of those patients that gained weight. In the last 6 months I have lost 21 pounds. The brain fog and migraines are history. Please Please Please follow the gluten free diet if you have celiac disease. It is well worth it. I turned 50 in August but I feel like I am 30. Actually I feel better than I did at 30. Life is good. I have been gluten free 11 months. I feel alot better but I have problems with uncooked vegetables. They make be bloat really bad. If I eat them cooked I am fine. My nutritionist explained to me that it can take up to 2 years for our small intestine to heal completely so even though we are gluten free we still have a compromised digestive system. Keep a food diary an pay close attention to it. You may find that something you wouldnt even dream of is causing the bloating. Good luck to you.

I was fortunate to find a nutritionist in my area that has Celiac Disease. She has been very helpful. I spoke to a dietician before I met my nutritionist and she said she wouldn't be able to help me.

I will be traveling from Cleveland to San Francisco this Friday. It is a 5 hour flight. Any suggestions on what to pack to eat on the plane. I really would like to take something nutritious as I have been trying to lose weight. Also, do you know if I will have a problem at the airport if I bring my own food?

I was diagnosed in October and I have lost 15 pounds. But you will need to reduce processed foods as they have many calories in them. I eat meat, veggies, and fruit and an occasional candy bar. Remember it can take up to 2 years for your small intestine to heal.

What do you mean by reactivated? Once you have celiac disease you always have it and must stay on a gluten free diet. Even without symptoms you are causing damage to yourself if you are eating gluten. You may not be absorbing nutrients because of the damaged villi, therefore, your child will not either. I would suggest calling the pediatrician. You may have to do some supplementing. Good luck to you and your son.

Boy do I feel your pain. One of the side effects of Celiac for me was weight gain. It came on so quick. I have been gluten free since October. I got on the scale about an hour ago and I have lost 15 pounds since then. But what I have to do to lose that is incredibly hard. Don't take your calories down too low. Increase your exercise instead. I keep my calories between 1300-1800 per day depending on what is going on that day. I strength train 4 days a week (with a personal trainer), I do cardio 6 days a week between 45 mins to an hour. I also meet with a holistic nutritionist that has taught me the benefits of eating greens. Collard and turnip greens have become my best friends. Realistically with all the exercise I am doing I should be losing weight rapidly. But it is a struggle that I refuse to give in to. I will be 50 in August. I would like to lose another 17 pounds by then. Will I do lit? It is highly doubtful but I am not going to give up. Good luck to you.

I had an appointment with my GI last week and we discussed the need for probiotics. He is having me try Floristor. It is supposed to be really good for Candida. Not all pharmacies have it. I found mine at Walgreens. It is a little pricey. Its around $40 for 25 days. BUT if it takes care of my problems it is worth every penny. I have been on it for about a week and my stomach problems seem to be settling down.
