I have heart problems, a pacemaker, and celiac. Gee.....ya' think I need to get one???
-
Yeah, it is a bit difficult to get a MASSIVE amount of carbs on this diet unless you really try, but just make sure you continue to eat all of the fruits and veggies you can and I don't know all of the nutrition info on the homemade yogurt, but I am sure it has good carbs. ALso, if your body isn't getting enough calories per day,
you go into "starvation" mode where you don't lose weight, in fact you hold onto everything you put in your body, so that may be why you aren't dropping weight. Oh, raisins are really good source of carbs!
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Well....thanks for bursting my bubble!! And I thought I was keeping this weight on because I was now healthy. Heehee.....not really, I know it's not true. But in everyone else's eyes, it is! As long as I don't start to look rail thin again, people generally leave me alone about my weight.
Well, I know carrot juice has lots of natural sugar. So I am getting very tempted to just get an assortment of meats, so that I don't get bored, and drink the carrot juice and see if I feel an improvement. What can a little experiment like that hurt anyway?
Ooohhh...can't do raisins. I used to hate raisins. Now I'd KILL to have a handful. I sooooo crave salads and veggies and fruits. Dream, dream, dreeeeeaaam, dreeeeeeeeeeeeammm..........(can you hear the tune?).
It's late. I'm goofy.

"Sorry about the "panty" comment, guys. Guess I had a little built up bitterness going on there."
No apology needed! We all have bad days!!!
I am not sure about the carbs you should ingest. Can you eat dairy at all?? Cheese would help if you are not wanting to lose weight. Plus nut butters, etc. Make sure the peanut butter is all natural and just ground nuts. Keeping the weight on should not be an issue if you are getting enough ~ even if it is just meat and different proteins. Can you tolerate fruit juice?? That would help as well. I make a shake out of frozen ripe bananas and orange juice. Yummy!!! I love apples dipped in peanut butter ~ we picked some off of our trees last night, and that was my dessert. SO good!!
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I can't do dairy, with the exception of a little bit of mild cheddar cheese. Hardly enough to equal much carbs. With the gastroparesis, I can't hardly get over a thousand calories a day anyway. I have no idea how I'm not dropping weight. But I'm not. I'm steady. Not dropping, not gaining.
I can't do fruit juices at all. Anything acidic is a BIG problem for me. I often dream about them though.
I didn't think nut butters were good sources of carbs. ??
Anyway, thanks for the ideas. I'm open to any and all.

Call me blonde, but I don't get it. What's the drug? How does it "work"? I didn't see anything in the article that explained anything, other than they were starting the testing.
I'm not blonde by the way.

I have a question about SCD and carbs. I weigh around 117, and am 5'3" tall. How many carbs a day do you think I am suppose to have? I need to know so that I can determine how much carrot juice to drink if I start the SCD back up. It's the only carb I can tolerate. I would basically be eating all sorts of different meats, plus the carrot juice, and possible a tiny bit of green beans. And I do mean tiny.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the advice.
I actually don't think that I can tolerate anything with almonds in it too. I have noticed many times that I feel especially heavy and bloated after eating almond flour. I tried eating them once more this morning, and I feel and look like I am 5 months pregnant. My weight also went up by 6 lbs over night after eating one........heavy muffins : )
I better just stick to yogurt.
H : )
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Yep. All those nut butters are really fattening. I can't tolerate the almond flour either. Too bad, cuz I think they're yummy!

That's interesting, because for me, whenever I take supplements that supplement estrogen, I have blood sugar crashes. When I supplement with progesterone, I have fewer crashes, if any. Progesterone is supposed to dominate from ovulation on, with estrogen building before that. So that would fit with your symptoms, too.
Sometimes it seems like everything in my life revolves around my freakin' cycle. Ugh! Only 20 more years until I hit menopause... sigh....
Stephanie
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Stephanie,
When my doc tested my estrogen/progesterone, he found that my estrogen was a bit low, and my progesterone was TEN TIMES higher than it should be. So maybe there's something weird going on there...it's probably due to the polycystic ovarian disease....which is linked to insulin resistance. I know there's a link. I just don't know what to do about it. And I don't know that the progesterone is that high anymore. That was a while back.
Yup...looking forward to menopause myself. Well, not menopause, but AFTER menopause.

Anybody know if Kava is gluten-free? By the ingredients, it seems to be, but ya' never know. It's the instant coffee that has the acid removed.

Brenda - your readings sound similar to mine. While 69 on it's own isn't particularly low, if it was 90 15 mins before or something (I'm hypothesizing) then you would feel the effects. A lot of the time when people have hypoglycemic episodes, they don't see that in their blood sugar results, because they test when they feel bad (which is usually when your adrenal system kicks in and gets your blood sugar back up to reasonable levels, which also makes you feel kind of crummy) or because the change in blood sugar levels was rapid, but the new lower number isn't as low as what is considered too low. Generally, at least for my well being, when I see myself falling in the 60's I start paying a lot of attention to my diet. Formerly, one of my favorite things to bring my blood sugar up to normal range when it wasn't doing that on it's own, I would eat a sandwich with sprouted grain bread. That seemed to hold me in the right range for 2-3 hours, like nothing else would. Of course I can't eat that now. What I try to do is eat a complex carb with a fat, like brown rice toast with peanut butter. Peanut butter is my saving grace. Also, a glass of milk (I drink goat milk) is good, has a good combo of fat, sugar and protein. But if you can't have dairy, something else would have to be used.
It does sound like you might have some blood sugar issues. It might be worth your while to order some more strips to just see how you do over a longer period of time, in case you fluctuate. Keep a journal of how you feel, what you eat, and what your blood sugars are. This stuff can be pretty convincing to doctors who might be skeptical of claims of blood sugar issues.
Take care
Stephanie
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Stephanie,
I am going to order some more test strips, because I want to see what the readings are when I "think" my blood sugar is too high. I really do think I fluctuate, and it all depends on where I am in my cycle. The closer I get to my period, the more I struggle with the high end. After my period, I feel like I battle the low, until I start ovulating again. Unfortunately, all my cravings come when I'm ovulating. And after I start, my blood sugar is low, but so is my appetite. Ugh....
I don't think my doc would be skeptical at all if I just showed him the numbers. He's not one that convincing is like pulling teeth.
Thanks again for that site that sells the strips. That price seems a LOT more reasonable than even Wal-Mart!!

Brenda, since you are not taking any medication to lower blood sugar, the low readings you see should be a clear sign that you do NOT have diabetes.

I tried so many different gluten-free vitamins, and they all made me sick. The only thing I've been able to tolerate so far is Boost - avoid the choc malt. I realize it's probably very similar to Ensure, so it may not work for you. But, I've tried both products, and I found Boost is a lot easier on my stomach. After I started on the Boost every day, I began to feel so much better. (I haven't tried the gummi vites yet - they sound good).
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I didn't buy the gummy vites, but I got some called Yummi Bears today at my HFS. They're really yummy and seem to agree with me. The only problem is that they don't have much calcium/magnesium. Those are two that I really need, so I guess I'll try and get that some other way. Anybody know if the Gummy Vites has the cal/mag?
I'll sure look at the Boost and see what the ingredients are. Thanks for sharing that.

Hiya Brenda.....and Welcome
Is it ok if I ask how long you stayed on the SCD previously. I'm just thinking if you stayed on the SCD (with your modifications of course) for a little while, maybe you soon could tolerate more and more food. Boy, I never thought I could eat cheese and nuts (yikes!) so soon, but it happened. I really hope you see results quickly so you can expand your diet and enjoy
Take care, Misa
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Gosh, I don't even remember how long I tried it. I think it was only a couple of weeks. I had low energy even when I started. So for it to stoop so much lower just made life impossible. But, like I said, I may start trying again with having the veggie juice as my carbs.
Sorry about the "panty" comment, guys. Guess I had a little built up bitterness going on there.
Thanks for the good wishes.

Brenda, with those levels, you don't sound like you have diabetes. 82 fasting is well within the normal range. 69 is a bit low for two hours after eating, buit not alarming. None of your readings are high enough to indicate diabetes to me. But, I am not a doctor, just somebody with two decades of experience with my own type 1 diabetes.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
No...I know they're not too high. I definitely felt a low all day. I never did get in the 90's today with my readings. That's what I thought was odd. The reading that was two hours after I ate (the 69) should have been a lot higher, shouldn't it? I found it odd that I dropped so much lower when it should have been higher.
Keep in mind, that since I felt low all day, the reading pretty much indicated that. I am interested to test it on the days where I feel it's too high. Those are the days where I don't feel like eating a thing. Today, since it was low, I ate a lot more than usual. But diabetics don't usually flip-flop like that, do they? They run high all the time??
Sorry I'm so confused and asking so many questions. You guys and gals are jewels for being so patient with me.

Thanks for the link, Stephanie. I'll be sure to check it out, because I'm already almost out of strips. I only had ten, and messed up a few times. :-(
This morning, my fasting blood sugar was 82. Not bad, eh? But then, I ate breakfast, and I usually feel junky about an hour after I eat breakfast, so....I tested it, and it was only an 89. I thought I would be higher than that...aren't you suppose to go higher than six points? Then...I tested two hours after eating breakfast, and it was clear down to 69. So I am really confused. Shouldn't I be higher than that? With my symptoms, I can feel either like my blood sugar is too high, or too low. This morning, I felt like it was really low, and I was shaky, anxious, etc. This is nothing new....happens a lot. For lunch, I tested right before I ate, and was an 88. Again, didn't look too bad. Then I tested two hours later, and I was an 86. So again, I'm not going up much. But at least I didn't lose twenty points either....and I did, by that time, feel a little more stable - not shaky, etc.
So are those numbers good, or bad?

This is so interesting that someone else cannot take supplements. My body tolerates nothing and yes I did try intraveineous (sp) vitamins treatments for three months. For me eating healthy works best. Chronic
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Well, that's kinda my point though. I'm not able to eat healthy, because I can't tolerate the fruits and veggies. Hence the possible need for some type of supplemental nutrients.

LOL, Peter! I don't like wading through all the poltically correct jargon either. No offense to those of you that do.
Anyway, I think it was only about 20 minutes after I ate...and I didn't eat all that much. But I never do, nor can I with the gastroparesis. It seems like I eat all the time, all throughout the day. I don't really have much of a set schedule, although that has gotten a little better lately.
I will test it tomorrow before eating, and two hours after. Thanks for that info. Guess I should have checked that out before so eagerly poking myself.
OK. Type 2 is what I think I would have. I have the polycystic ovarian syndrome, and insulin resistance very often goes along with that. But who knows....I could be wrong. Type 2 is what my grandmother has also.
I'm not really all that sedentary. I have my days where I will sit a lot (I homeschool my kids), but I do take about a half mile walk every night, and I do housework too. My BMI is fine. I'm 5'3" and about 117, give or take a few pounds, depending on what time of the month it is. (Sorry if that's TMI). But I've always thought I was thin because of not being able to eat very much at a time. Not because I don't have blood sugar problems.
Thanks for the info, once again!! Can't wait until tomorrow when I get to poke myself again!!!

Hi,
I wasn't able to read all of the pages on this thread, but I'm very familiar with SCD and have tried it before. I ran into the problem of not getting enough carbs. I can't handle ANY fruits or veggies, and honey makes me feel like I'm going to die...I even run a high fever when I eat it. So....I can't survive on meat and eggs. I gotta have some carbs. BUT....was talking to a lady on the SCD list, and she suggested veggie juice. I can tolerate carrot and celery juice somewhat, but not as good as i used to. Anyway...would love to try another run at it with the juice being my carbs.
I would join a message board like this in a heartbeat (for SCD). I have joined the two lists that are available on the net, but a board like this would be better, if you ask me. And I would like it to be more friendly than the lists. People over there get their undies in a wad a lot of times. I still am a part of the lists, but only for the info. I would like a place that I can come to and ask questions and opinions without getting ripped into.
That's my two cents. Hope it helps.

Ok, I'm back from Walgreens. Guess what???? I got a Free Style model for only ten bucks!!! They were having a MAJOR sale!!! Yeah for me!!! They had another model for free, if you bought the strips....eek! I had no idea how expensive strips are!! So for now, I just have the strips that come with the unit itself. I tested twice now (first one didn't work because I did it on my arm and not much blood came out. But the second one was fine, and the reading was 106. I had just eaten a snack a little beforehand. So, that is fine, from what I understand. ? Of course, evenings are when I feel best....but I'll test again in the a.m., before any drink or food.
Wish me luck.
~Brenda, who is bleeding like a stuck pig.

Ok,
Here's what I'm gonna do....
I had told Peter in an email that I was just going to call the doc, because I didn't have the $$ to go out and get the meter, etc. But....then I remembered that my insurance doesn't even pay for that doc anymore (I will still go to him on occasion, but that would be more $$ than just getting the strips). So....I'm going to go to Walgreen's tonight and see what they have. That's the only store that I have close....otherwise, it's a long drive for me. I'll let you know what I find!
But I have a few more questions:
1). I'm not sure what the diff is beteween type 1 and type 2. I was thinking I would be type 2, if anything...but a lot of you had brought up type 1. ?
2.) I'm wondering if I'm paranoid about the urine smell. I mean, it seems like it smells sweet, but it's not like i can compare it to everyone elses urine smell. Ya' know? So how do I know if I'm being too high strung on that??
3.) Should I test my urine first thing in the a.m.? What's the best time?
4.) I experimented with some muffins last night that were made with soy flour. They tasted great, but the rest of the night, I felt SO full and bloated and thirsty. And during the night, I got up twice to urninate (which I n ever do), and my hands were really swollen, and was thirsty all night. Does that sound related to diabetes, or is that just me eating something that didn't agree with me?
Again, I really appreciate everyone's help. You all have been just GREAT!
~Brenda, who is off to Walgreen's!!
-
Have you added any new vitamins or herbal supplements? This can cause a change in urine odor - usually just once a day. Claire
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Nope....nothing new at all.
~Brenda
-
Oh my goodness, Stephanie!!! I had no idea you could go out and buy that!! Are they really accurate? Has anyone else done this??
No need for me to keep a journal. I eat the same things every day! So they give you enough materials to test that much? Every 15 - 30 minutes is a lot. I am definitely a do it yourself person, especially since money is LOW right now. What brands did you get? And which one did you like better??
Thanks Stephanie. I really appreciate it!

I've been trying to find a liquid gluten-free vitmain but I haven't had any luck yet.
I just bought some Gummi Vites last week and they taste so yummy!! I got mine at Wal-mart but I've also seen them at Walgreens and CVS.
My dd takes Yummi Bears for Hero Nutritionals and they are really good too. I have to get them at the health food store. She begs me for her bears everyday!!
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Great!!! I will check next time I'm at WM. I wanna gummi bear!!!!

Thanks for your help!!! I feel better about asking for the test now. Oh...and btw, my grandmother has diabetes, she lost an ovary due to cysts, and her mother had diabetes. So...it definitely runs in my family. Oh, and my brother was diagnosed as "borderline"....whatever that means.
~Brenda
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Uhhh...by "lost" an ovary, I mean that it was taken out surgically. HAHA!! That is what she says...."I lost an ovary"....so I was just relaying that.
~Brenda

Excessive thirst is also a major symptom of diabetes. Combined with sweet smelling urine, it is very likely that, like me, you have diabetes. Type 1 diabetes and celiac disease are both genetically influenced autoimmune diseases which often occur together. Please, get yourself tested, Brenda. It is a simple test to see if there is glucose in your urine, or excessive glucose in your blood.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Yeah....and I have mentioned the dry mouth feeling/guzzling water thing to a lot of docs and none of them even blinked. UGH!!! Well...I have a doctor in my old home town that I KNOW will test me. And I am going over there (it's six hours away) in October. So I will have him test me then....unless you guys think it's more urgent than that. Otherwise, I could call and have a phone consult and get tested asap. ??
Are they going to make me drink that syrupy stuff?? Is it even gluten free?? Or will they just test my blood and/or urine?? I really don't want to fast and drink that stuff....but I would if I had to. Just wondering if I can chicken out a little.

That's a very good point, celiac3270. Better to be sick for a week over getting glutened than dead.
