Judy,
How do you get a meter? Doesn't the doc have to prescribe that??
-
tarnalberry,
I had a horribly reaction to almond milk, so I'm thinking I am allergic to them. ?? I can have cheese, and I picked up some soy yogurt today. We'll see if it makes me ill. Hard boiled eggs are what I do in the morning sometimes. But hadn't really thought of doing them throughout the day. (Duh)
Thanks for the suggestions. Does anyone know of any protein bars that are gluten-free?

Linda,
For BBQ sauce (for chicken), I put one cup of Heinz ketchup, plus one can of Pepsi. Stir with a wisk, marinade overnight, and either fry or put on the grill. Makes a pretty tender, yummy tasting dish. Not to mention cheap!
Enjoy!

Hey,
Went to Vitamin Cottage today and found Glaceau smart water. It's distilled water with electrolytes in it. This is great for me, since I have tested low for calcium/potassium. Has anyone ever tried their vitamin waters or their flavored electrolyte water? There's natural flavor in the flavored electrolyte water...so I am not sure if it's gluten-free. I tried to access the website but it wouldn't let me in. :-(

Judy04,
I haven't been diagnosed with diabetes. But I'm positive I have blood sugar issues. My doc put me on an herb that is suppose to do the same thing as glucaphage/metformin. These are the insulin resistant drugs that docs put diabetics on (my grandma is on it). Anyway, the herb does the same thing. I've noticed a good difference in the way my tummy acts when I'm on it. Not as much burning, and my blood sugar feels way more under control. But....whenever I feel like the blood sugar gets bad, I get really sleepy, tired, and grumpy. I have gastroparesis, which is evidently found in some diabetics. So I think there is a link....I just haven't quite figured it out yet. I've not been tested for the diabetes...partly because I know that if I fast and then drink that sugary drink, I'm going to get violently ill! The sleepiness is worst in the morning - when I obviously haven't eaten anything in many hours. The sleepy yucky feeling doesn't go away until I eat lunch and then sleep for just a few minutes. I can't sleep too long, or else my stomach feels even worse. Weird, I know. I'm so sick of being sick and tired and not being able to sleep it off. After four years of it, it gets old.
Ok...enough ranting.
I currently do not count carbs. But I'm off (ok...almost completely off) of processed sugar, and I keep my breads, rice, potato chips at a very tight minimum.
What do you think? Should i get tested?

Are there any celiacs out there that also have diabetes? Is it common for these two diseases accompany each other?
Also, if you do have diabetes, do you find that when your blood sugar is high, you are very sleepy with an upset stomach?

Hi All,
I'm looking for ideas for some high protein snacks. It can have some carbs, but not a bunch. I eat little bits throughout the day (except for lunch time, and that's still pretty small). So I find myself feeling like I have to fix a chicken breast or something in order to just get a quick fix.....which isn't so quick. I eat a lot of cashews on the run....but that's getting old. I also eat bananas with peanut butter for a quick fix...also getting old. I'm trying to stay away from a lot of processed food too.
Thanks for any help you can offer. I'm evidently not very creative when it comes to food. Oh....no dairy, fiber, or anything acidic.

The sugar filled pb cups are gluten-free too.

Hi all,
Just wondered if you have heard of tonic water, and if you have tried it, does it help your tummy after you ingest gluten (accidentally of course!)?

Funny you should say that about blood sugar. My doc put me on an herb that is for insulin resistance because of polycystic ovarian syndrome. It does the same thing that the drugs they put diabetics on, which is stabilize your blood sugar. Well...when I take it, I have way less of a problem with acid in my stomach. When I have less of a problem with that, I am able to sleep better. But....I've just started the treatment, so I'm not "there" yet. The reason they put you on the insulin meds is because there is some link between that and the ovary problem. They are finding that the cysts leave and the menstrual cycle returns to normal when women are put on these insulin drugs. Another "odd" thing is that they are seeing gastroparesis in diabetics. So apparently there is some link there. Going gluten-free didn't seem to do diddly for my stomach problems. The blood sugar meds did. Go figure.

I have considered chlorophyll before. What brand do you use?

So, if I wanted to make brownies with Splenda instead of sugar, would I use the same amount?

Hmmm....can't do the dairy thing yet. I've been off of milk and yogurt and such for three years and still can't eat it. Of course, I've only been gluten-free for about a month, so I'm hoping that I'll heal enough to partake!!!
Love those ideas though....sound yummy!

Mariann,
GP is when your food won't empty out of your stomach into the small intestine. It can cause a lot of the same symptoms as celiac....dehydration, malnutrition, etc. A lot of people that have it don't eat for months. Some get feeding tubes. Some even have their stomachs taken out or have transplants. It's crazy!!! I lost nearly 50 pounds in four months. Of course, I had both the gp and celiac...just didn't know it. I always hated that extra weight....but I'm thankful I had all that to lose. My body literally ate off of itself for a long time.
As for sleep....I've had a weird symptom that prevents me from getting the sleep I need. Basically, if I sleep enough to feel rested, my stomach is incredibly sick. So....instead of being (as) sick, I don't sleep enough, which produces exhausting, and it's a downhill process from there. This has gotten better since going gluten-free...but I'm nowhere near where I should be. Still hopeful though.

If you are just beginning the diet, you might not be healed enough to not have a reaction. In other words, I've been gluten-free for over a month, but I still don't digest things well (but better!). Give your body time to heal, and give yourself room for mistakes. You might want to just stick to the basics.....meat, potatoes, veggies, etc. I do a lot of bbq chicken. Put a cup of Heinz ketchup, and one can of Pepsi together, and mix with a wisk. Marinade the chicken overnight and you can either grill it, or fry it. Pretty yummy, very simple, and cheap! :-) Bananas do good to.....and eggs.
Good luck, and keep your chin up. The diet gets easier the more you do it.

Hmmm.....sooo.....is Splenda bad for you?? Kind of sounds like it's not that great of a thing to put in your system.
-
Just curious as to what foods, supplements, etc. have helped you heal? My doc has me on some glutamine, which is supposed to be great for healing the gut. Also, bananas seem to soothe my system better than any other food. Other than that, I haven't found much that sits exceptionally well. Admittedly, I haven't been gluten-free for that long. I'd love to hear what has proven to be successful for the more experienced gluten-free eaters!!

I have used Garden of Life, and they make me sleepy. I think it has something to do with my stomach (gastroparesis). Seems like anything that makes my stomach work better, makes me indredibly tired. I switched to Enzymatic Therapy (Mega-Zyme), thinking that maybe it was the brand. But it had the same affect. I don't understand at all why it has this affect on me. You would think it would really help. The other odd thing is that when I started taking the Garden of Life enzymes, I started having a monthly cycle again (albeit an irregular cycle). ??
Confused in Colorado,

I have heard of Splenda. What exactly is it? And I'm assuming it's gluten-free? Why don't you like it? Does it not raise blood sugar levels?
Hope that's not too many questions.

Well...when I first went gluten-free, I was basically eating meat, veggies and cashews, with a few potato chips here and there. Now that I've added some of the junk food that is gluten-free (snickers, Doritos, etc.), I'm not doing as good. So maybe a whole foods diet would work better, until I heal. I've only been gluten-free for a month or so.
What would you suggest for breakfast? I've been eating a lot of bacon and eggs, and it seems to sit pretty well with me. Sometimes I'll just have a banana with some peanut butter on it. Today, I've mostly eaten bananas and tuna since I'm having a bad day.
Thanks for your help with this, Mariann. I know all I've done on this board is ask questions, but I just keep coming up with a lot of them!! :-)

Sigh.....
Well, maybe we're all just getting old!! I see lots of older women walking around who aren't heavy, but have big bellies.
Just a thought....

Hey,
Before even receiving a reply from anyone, I ate them. No reaction from gluten! I was pretty sure they were gluten-free according to the ingredients, but I'm such a newbie....I was just so SCARED!!!
Anyway, they are actually pretty good. Definitely not the real thing....but good. It makes me feel like I've had some chocolate anyway.
Thanks for the replies!!

Mine is actually pretty thick....the hairdressers always are amazed. But it's still not as thick as it once was (and I'm only 32)....and it just doesn't grow that quickly. At least not for me. I'm sure it has something to do with not getting enough nutrients. Doesn't make it any funner though. :-)

Hmmm...I hear a lot of people talk about a whole foods diet. What exactly does that consist of? You're right. I do feel pretty limited already. Meat, veggies, and bananas. That's about it. Oh, and cashews. Everything else seems to bug me one way or another. I can't eat a lot of fiber, so a lot of the good stuff that people suggest are not an option for me. As for enzymes.....I had posted a message on the board about them making me really sleepy, but nobody replied. I just feel so tired and sleepy after taking them, it's hard to get motivated to do it. Anyway, I'd be curious to know what a whole foods diet is.....from you or anyone willing to offer the info.
Thanks. I just love this board.....it's so informative and supportive. Two things I REALLY need right now! :-)

Guar Gum
in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Posted
Well, I know guar gum has fiber, and I can't have a lot of that. So I am guessing that's what I'm reacting to. So many of the products that are labeled gluten-free have guar gum in it - I'm referring to things like cake mixes and such that you find at the health food store. I wonder if guar gum makes things stick together better than the xantham and that's why so many manufacturers make it. ??
