  1. Bring on the hookworms mate!

SCIENTISTS are inching closer to a new therapy for auto-immune disorders but many will find the treatment hard to swallow.

Queensland-based Dr James Daveson admits a "yuck factor" is involved in his research, after he deliberately infected 20 volunteers who have coeliac disease with hookworms.

The tiny parasite, which burrows through the skin before travelling via the bloodstream to live in the gut, was shown to give these people an improved tolerance for bread.

"The people playing host to live worms tolerated the gluten challenge and fared better on the tests compared to the wormless control subjects," said Dr Daveson from Brisbane's Princess Alexandra Hospital.

"They experienced less inflammation and less damage was seen in the intestinal wall."

More than 250,000 Australians have coeliac disease, a condition in which their malfunctioning immune system treats the gluten in wheat as a foreign invader.

Antibodies are produced that attack the wall of the bowel and this damage over time can increase a sufferer's risk of bowel cancer.

Dr Daveson said the research was based on the theory that our immune systems needed exposure to foreign organisms in order to work properly.

Several studies have shown a link between the vastly improved hygiene standards now enjoyed by humans and the growing number of autoimmune diseases.

Dr Daveson said it could be a case of the immune system picking a fight when it otherwise lacked a valid enemy.

He said the immune system may even work better with certain "friendly" organisms - like hook worms - on board.

"We have co-evolved with them ... (yet) we've cleaned up our world so well that we no longer have worms in our guts," Dr Daveson said.

"Some experts believe this is one of the reasons we're seeing an alarming increase in auto-immune disorders such as coeliac disease."

The worms used in the study are unique to humans, are not easily transmissible from person to person and unlike dog hookworm, they do not cause illness in humans.

At the end of the 21-week trial, all of the volunteers were offered medication to get rid of their parasite but all opted to keep their hookworm.

Dr Daveson will present the study's findings at the Australian Gastroenterology Week, an expert summit underway in Sydney this week.

  2. Centrelink want me to work 60hrs a week I say there is no way thats possible so now I have to see a jobs capacity offer. The outcome is with my med certificate that Id be on reduced capacity 0-7hrs but 0-7hrs also means I could be eligible for a disability pension I feel anything to shed some light on this

  3. Just decided to ignore, sometimes I feel panicked when im not on my diet thinking I have everything under the sun, feel like a bit of a hypochondriac as well. I had diarrhea cos I wasnt doing my diet its probably from that, dont think I would have bowl cancer or whatever at 23 thanks for the input guys

  4. Well im 23 diagnosed at 22 last year.

Dont believe I had celiac too long. Never had any sortof gastro issues till 21. At 21 I simply kept getting diarrhea all the time. I put it down to too many pizzas but then Celiac was discovered. In the year I have been diagnosed I went 3 mths gluten free recovered all deficiencys and only had slightly raised gliden or whatever it is, then fell off the wagon for like 6 mths probably undid all my work, on and off for a few others and im a few days clean.

I am trying to pull myself together enoough to realise Ive got a chance to miss out on all the other nasty stuff since im only 23 if I can just stick to the diet and not let my stomach get the better of me!

Good answers people, is is interesting that ther auto immune disease somewhat resolve with the elimination of gluten

  5. For me

    -Meccas is my favourite

-It is everywhere (I often have trouble simply finding gluten-free stuff)

    -It taste good

-It is filling (another big problem with this thing nothing fills me up)

and yeh. I have studied a bit of marketing and I know the water, the apples, allt he salds they now sell were brought in to deal with changing community standards of health. gluten-free would be as easy as having the buns on stand by then the burgers and chips and such are already gluten-free it would be so easy for them to implement and they would a make a fair bit too. They even sell little cereal boxes these days but no gluten-free buns for a gluten-free quater pounder? Thoughts? Will it come soon?

As more and more get diagnosed with Celiac hopefully they get a heads up about it? Of course if Maccas jumped on i RECKON alot of others would follow too

  6. Chips fine

    Coke fine

Burger without the bun= fine too. I eat it about 4 times a week love my fast food, without a bun I grab a knife and fork and eat my burger (triple cheese burger) like a steak, and then you got the chips and coke and its like a decent meal for a chance.

In the city they seem to know what im on about when I say burger with the bun but at my rural outlets the (most of the time stupid) attended goes

"what a burger without the bun?"

"so thats a burger without a bun"

Yes I am not trying to teach the theory of evolution but its embarassing as hell when they dont simply get it. I simply add in I have an allegey and yeh works a treat. Also when travelling sometimes you in a remote location where the only to eat basically is mcdonalds so you got go for it!

  7. Bio-Oil is on the outside...? Shouldn't be a problem using it?

I have crazy stretch marks all over... I feel maybe as I got with undiagnosed celiac it was due to that

Will make something very clear to you prevention is the best cure, the redness dont go away for ages.

-stretch marks on my biceps and legs, anything that grows at more than 1mm every 5 mths sees marks pop up for me <_<

  8. Exhibition center this Saturday

Also I noticed alot supermarkets sometimes they have great gluten-free range sometimes not so great which is the best supermarket for greatest variety of gluten-free food in Australia

  9. Yea I too get extremely tired and can literally sleep for 14+ hours and still want more after eating gluten.

It is the only real symptom i get from it. I have been to groups and normally celiacs have other symptoms that dominate there complaints, so I'll often assume i must not have it and go eat some gluten, then bang 3-4days of extreme tiredness.

I am booked in for my biopsy, so am meant to be eating gluten still but I can't eat it and do my degree so will put the testing off till after uni (will gluten chalenge before it for a couple of months).

Glad to see theres others with similar symptoms to me, makes me feel like i should really be giving the gluten free diet a go even if the biopsy comes back negative.

SAME HERE been noticing this as I went off my diet. Before I naturally wake up after 6 hours now its more like 10, too much time slept away

  10. Never remember this being normal. I have been off my diet for 3 or so months but basically when I egt up in the morning bending over is impossible its not pain just stiff and my back doesn't want to move and the other problem is my legs I see other people bounce up but my legs are stiff as hell and I FIND MYSELF having to do secret under the table stretches if I think I am going to have to move quickly

I am not even sure if this is related to being off my diet but is is strange as hell. Aged 23 too if that helps, not been working out, stiffness out of nowhere

    anyone experienced it

  11. ;) would smash some nice bread stuff too to be honest.

Without being Devils Advocate in the big scheme of things after I had had a week off my doctor said... you know its probably not going to kill you, or for such a short amount of time being off (I get no symptoms either)

But he said for that week off you will be recovering for the next month or two. So it is up to you. So its up to you. Its all about your own perspective I personally have a much more easy going attitude to Celiac than alot of the members here, perhaps because I am young or asymptomatic.

My doctor told me he recently discovered Celiac in an 88yr old. Now if you can leave to 88 and not even know you had this business then you have done alright! May be an isolate case I am not entirely sure, but a week off say in between in 6 mths of being gluten-free I think is unlikely to affect major long time.

"do the the good things the majority of the time"

  12. I get where you are coming from

I am 22 but it definitely is socially awkward being young with this disease.

Instead of being ridiculed for being different or not being able to have something I simply dont let on I have it and sometimes refuse food I had one friend saying "oh just because you cant eat this, thats why you think it craps"

If I act like I can have it but then refuse it, it works better for me, good luck its tough

  13. Planning doesnt come naturally maybe its because I am male or relatively young who knows.

But I think surely others are in this situation at some point too. For whatever reason there is no food for you to eat so!

    - I drink lots of water, I mean 4 cups just for nothing

    - I swear

-i think about some tasty stuff I will feast on to make up for this

Sorta happens say on a social night when food is going round on a saucer and everyone is nibbling and you just really dont feel like asking to read the ingredient at 1am at night or something so ou just go without!

So how do you deal with it?

  14. Still wanting to know this only see a bunch of preaching

Does having celiac disease in anyway way shape or form make you more likely to possibly die from swine flu? The news mentions existing conditions I want to know if celiac is an existing condition considered that could make swine flu very dangerous for us?

The person implicating that someone with type two diabetes more or less deserved to die should get effed ;)
