both plain, organic nuts and the butters cause problems for me. perhaps you might be right in that it may be an intestinal overgrowth or something of the sort, but i dont typically have problems with other proteins like egg, or anything.

i absolutely love all nuts and especially nut butters. unfortunately, i have noticed that even when i buy these products that only list nuts as an ingredient, i find myself experiencing tremendous bloating and way too much gas, just as i would if i had eaten a bowl of wheat pasta. im wondering if these products are likely to be cross contaminated with glutenous products. does anyone know if commercial peanut butter contains gluten? also, i tried almond butter which claimed to be gluten free and organic, yet i still experienced the same symptoms, could i possibly have a nut intolerance? have any of you folks had trouble with these products?

thank you for your responses.
it is nice to hear from other gluten intolerant people rather than the "professionals" i dealt with who refused to acknowledge my gluten sensitivity. they believed my fear of gluten was an attempt at avoiding food. while in the hospital, i clearly mentioned my gluten intolerance and vegetarianism, but they told me that i should wait until discharge to make that decision, and they force fed me both meat and tons of glutenous food. there were like, 9 grains incorporated into my daily meal plan and i was in constant agony. all they would do for me is give me tums. so glad to be out

i noticed that when i had a strawberry slim fast in the morning, i became extremely gassey and bloated. now, it might be coincidence, but those symptoms are usually my main problems when it comes to consuming gluten. i would be careful.

im in my second year of college now and i still live on campus, which means, i have to eat school cafeteria food which is not too catering to my needs. its definitely hard to stick with a gluten free diet because and i do slip up very often. i dont think i have made it a week being completely gluten free. i am desperate to get my own apartment so i can moniter all of my food. it doesnt make it any easier that my friends dont really understand it either and they are constantly buying glutenous food and chowing down in front of me, offering some to me, and all of that. i must say, i quite admire your discipline for being able to stick to your diet under college stress.

hi im new to the board,
i hope this post is in the right place and is not innapropriate in any way. well, to provide a bit of background, i should mention that i am probably not one of the severely afflicted gluten intolerant sufferers, but my major symptom is extreme bloating and abdominal swelling. i didnt realize that i was gluten intolerant until fairly recently. before then, i had thought i was just fat and decided that i wanted to try diet and exercise. when i disovered that my seudo pregnant swelling went down after only eating fruits and vegetables but returned when eating outside of that diet, i went a bit overboard and was quickly sucked into an eating disorder. it may seem very trivial and vain to those who do not understand the psychology of eating disorders, but its a very difficult issue to deal with and recover from. currently, i am finding it hard to cope with a "healthy" gluten free diet because i ususally end up slipping back into old behaviors. i cant help but feel that my gluten sensitivity contributed to my problems and im wondering if there is anyone else out there who may share any similar issues.
any comments would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

i have a very similar experience. in fact, i created a post about this same issue a few days ago. just found out im gluten intolerant and am also "recovering" from anorexia. though your right, the thoughts never leave you and i must admit i do not want to get better if it means gaining weight. gluten makes it all so much worse, and i cannot make the bloating/swelling in my tummy go down, even though i have switched to a gluten free diet a couple weeks ago. the only time i had a flat/concave stomach was when i was eating less than 50 calories a day...which usually came only from the lowest calorie fruits/vegetables. i am hoping to god that this gluten free diet starts flattening my stomach soon, otherwise i fear that i will return to my old ways because i just cannot stand this.
