About Me
I am 21 and I go to Texas Woman's University Nursing school. I will be graduating with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing next May-2010. I plan to move to Boston after graduation and be an OR nurse. I am also a ballet dancer. I have danced since the age of 3 and now because of nursing school I don't have much time for it. I am also part Italian and therefore my only food group before being diagnosed mid May 2009 was bread, pasta, bread, oh and more pasta.
The most depressing thing about my diagnosis was that I wasn't having any symptoms at all. (at least not anything significant enough to bother me) The only reason I even went to a doctor was because I had been trying to donate blood for 4 months and my hemoglobin was consistently too low to donate. I have been donating blood for 3 years and I have never had a problem with my hemoglobin up until now. I went to the doctor after 3 tries to donate blood. After the first try, I figured I would just eat more iron rich food and then I would be fine. After the second try, I decided it was time to take iron supplements in addition to eating more iron rich food. After the third try, I figured something was up and I should probably go to a doctor to figure out why I'm anemic. I knew that there was probably something weird going on because all of the usual reasons for anemia had been ruled out. I didn't have any ulcers and I wasn't bleeding anywhere else. My doctor decided to send me to the gastroenterologist to have an endoscopy because she was certain I had an ulcer. Well the gastroenterologist was a lot smarter. When I told her my history about donating blood and my lack of ulcers, she immediately said that she thought it might be Celiac. What are the chances that I would not have any symptoms at all and happen to be diagnosed immediately after going to the doctor?
