  1. My friends want to go to Applebees for dinner tonight. What am I getting myself in for? Are they good? I looked on-line and saw that they had a menu for wheat free. Do they do gluten free? What have people's experiences been like?

    Thanks.

  2. Thank you all for your wonderful advice. I don't know exactly where we are going to go, or when because it depends on when my friends get back from the amusement park. But we are going out on a tomorrow night, so hopefully it wont be too busy. I'm going to suggest a couple of places, but they get to pick since they are paying. I'll let you know how it goes. I don't think I've ever been so nervous about going out to eat before.

  3. I am going out with friends on Tuesday night. This is the first time I've gone with friends since I've been diagnosed. I'm really worried about getting sick. I haven't been glutened for a couple of months now and I want to keep the stretch going. What should I do to make sure that my dining experience is as safe as possible? We'll be going to a restaurant with a gluten free menu, but it doesn't feel like that is enough. What do I need to do? Thank you.

  4. Welcome!

I'm sorry that you are going through this, but glad that you have found us here. I think this website has been the best find I made when I found out last year that I had Celiac. I found that the gluten free product guide was really really helpful when I started trying to buy food. It gave me a place to start when I was trying to buy food. I also read Gluten Free for Dummies and it had a lot of good information. We are here to answer questions.

  5. Thank you all for the advice. I've never eaten out here and only once or twice before I moved. I'm a very poor student so don't go out to eat so it is all really new. You all make this so much easier. I'm just so scared about getting sick because they are coming in the middle of the week and I can't miss class or I fail. I don't have to tell you all how bad it is. I hate food. Thank you all for the advice. You are all amazing.

  6. Hello.

I need some advice. I have friends who are coming to my area to visit. They want to take me out to eat. But we don't know exactly when they will get in. Since they are going to pay, I want to let them decide where to eat. I have only gone out a couple of times since I was diagnosed last year and have moved since then so don't know a lot of the restaurants in my area. I don't think they know my area well. I haven't seen them since I was diagnosed. I know they have a couple of friends with celiac, but I don't know how much they know about it. I do know they are worried about me getting sick from going out to eat, and they don't want that (neither do I). How do I deal with this situation. It is really new. I don't want them to feel restricted. But they are just planning on calling me when they get into town and then picking me up to go out. I don't know what to expect. I haven't seen my friends in a couple of years. Any advice would be really helpful.

  7. Did you ever suffer from GI symptoms before you were diagnosed? I assume that if you don't have GI problems to begin with, then it will be harder to tell if you are glutened?

I've had GI symptoms both before and after I was diagnosed. It just seemed like this weekend I was getting depression more like when I get glutened than when I just get depression (different symptom set). So I was wondering if I could get one without the other.

  8. I have had my diagnosis for a year now this month. I was wondering if I can get the neurological symptoms of celiac without getting the GI symptoms. It is hard to tell apart because I usually have depression and anxiety and so it is hard to tell that apart from when I get glutened. If I have had GI symptoms before would I always have the GI symptoms? The symptoms tend to be a little bit different. But I don't know. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

  9. I got glutened a little bit sometime in the last two days (don't know exactly what caused it). This morning I woke up with wrist pain. I'm trying to figure out if somehow I slept wrong (on both my wrists) or if this is a reaction to the gluten. I've been icing and it helps a little. Do other people get joint pain?

  10. I got glutened about two weeks ago now. When I first was diagnosed the gluten reaction would last 2-3 days. Now it seems to be lasting over a week. Is this normal? I had such bad depression a week later. It was just like the depression I got right after I was glutened in the past. I was really careful so I know I wasn't reglutened. Does it normally get longer over time? If it does this is just going to be even more awful.

Also do people drink soda/pop from dispensing machines? I'm pretty sure this is how I got glutened. I don't know if it was the pop or the glass or what. Can plastic have gluten in it? Thanks.

  11. I think that I might be having problems with dairy. But I'm not sure what this means exactly. I know that some people have sesitivities to lactose and some cesian. I know when I was originally tested for celiac they tested me for lactose and there were not any positive results. Could I be sensitive to it a year later? If I want to do a test to see if I'm sensitive to it, how long do I have to go without? I've been having really strong cravings for milk lately. Is that suggestive of anything? Also I think my skin has been acting up because of the increased dairy. I love my dairy. If it isn't dairy causing me problems what else might it be? Any help would be appreciated.

  12. When I first was giving the possible diagnosis I called a friend because I was so upset. She told me that I could cheat and just have a little discomfort, because that is what another friend of her's did. So there are people out there who cheat. After going gluten free I would never intentionally eat gluten. But I think a lot of people (who don't know what it is really like) think that people can cheat with little consequence. So it would make sense that doctors wouldn't trust that people are gluten free since there are people out there who cheat, they can't know for sure.

  13. Yeah for a gluten free kitchen! Make sure that you clean the whole kitchen. Every surface, every drawer, cupboard, oven, refrigerator etc. When I moved in to my apartment my dad and i used lysol to clean the kitchen and it seemed to work fine. Then I went around the rest of the apartment and cleaned the other surfaces also, just to make sure.
