  1. I can't eat the gluten-free rice breads either. IMO, they are disgusting. There are a couple of bread mixes that you can make in a bread machine that are edible (buy them on-line or at a grocery store like Whole Foods). Also, if you buy the Van's gluten-free frozen waffles (our local Kroger sells them), you can make a decent sandwich with them. For most...
  2. Donna Mae, there is also a blogger on this site called "Amanda'sMommy" or something like that. Her blog is on the second page right now. She has several lists of gluten-free products that may help you out. She's got some make-up lists and I think other things like shampoos and lotions in addition to foods.

    24 Hours

No problems with my Starbucks frappuccino. Yeah! Now the question is...what was it that was causing my digestive upset?
  4. Well, Donna Mae, I guess you won't get a straight answer here either. You got two conflicting answers right off the bat. If you are worried about gluten in non-food items, and you can't tell from the ingredients labels, then I would suggest calling the manufacturer directly to find out about any product that you want to use.
  5. I'm a big fan of Starbuck's mocha drinks. My favs are toffee nut mocha frappuccino and when it's cold, I like to drink a cafe mocha from time to time. Hmmm, the last two times I had one, I noticed that I got really bad diarrhea within 12 hours of drinking them. I was beginning to wonder if they had gluten...or something that was making me sick...maybe...
  6. Unless one is ingesting make-up, shampoo, etc., it should not be an issue. Gluten damages the intestines of a person with celiac disease. It cannot damage the intestines unless it gets into the intestines. It will not soak through one's skin into the body. Personally, I do not check the ingredients of things I don't eat and I do not have any reaction...

    One Month Now

There is absolutely no reason to go hungry. Like Kaycee said, there are lots of mainstream foods to eat that are gluten-free. It doesn't have to say gluten-free on the label, although many companies are now starting to put that info on their labels without charging for it like it's something special. Just about the only specialty items I buy regularly...

    Need Info

I kept getting sick from eating the chef salad at Jason's Deli. I thought it was the lettuce and something funky was happening to me. Wrong. When I stopped eating the turkey and ham that came on the salad, I was fine. Apparently, there is gluten in their deli meat, but I haven't been able to get an answer from the company. I tell you that just...
  9. No. I have no desire to be sick and there are plenty of good things to eat, including gluten-free macaroni and cheese, without cheating on the diet.

    Patio Repairs

I finally, finally got around to repairing my patio. I think I've got pics on this blog of the concrete patio that I painted a couple of years ago. This spring we had to have foundation repairs and the company that did it had to chop four holes in the patio. It was extremely annoying, but even more so because I asked them to be especially careful not to...

    Reformed Celiac

Great! It is very helpful to have family members that know the drill. It means that family get togethers aren't filled with tempting foods that you can't eat. So many of my family members have it that all of our meals together are gluten-free.

    Reformed Celiac

I haven't come across any information linking pituitary tumors with celiac disease. But celiac disease can stunt growth just by itself. You can't grow properly if you aren't getting the proper nutrients. Both of my children were small for their age. My daughter is 23 and I guess about average - 5'3" and probably under 100 lbs. My son had a big growth spurt...

    Kidney Stone!

OUCH! I had a kidney stone attack on Monday. I don't think I've ever felt such pain...maybe childbirth, but this was different. It was a sick pain with no end in sight. At least when you birth a child you know it will end and something good will come of it. The pain started at about 10:30 in the morning. It was a sharp pain like a muscle spasm...
  14. I must say, I don't understand this anger and frustration. I don't remember feeling that way when I was first diagnosed. Maybe I did and just have forgotten. It's been 3-4 yrs. for me being gluten-free. I don't have any problem buying gluten-free foods at the regular grocery store and only occassionally go to a specialty store for something...
  15. Thank you for the list of doctors!

  16. Here's a good article on a restaurant owner in NY who has taken gluten-free to heart: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/25/dining/2...amp;oref=slogin JOSEPH PACE
  17. It varies from person to person. I don't think anyone can give you a timeline on when symptoms will go away. I'm just guessing, but I think there are immediate symptoms caused by ingesting symptoms (like my MIL gets a rash behind her knees immediately upon ingesting gluten) and then there are the long term symptoms that are caused by the damage...
  18. I eat Chinese food regularly. I almost always get Kung Pao Chicken and I just order it without soy sauce. They call it white sauce at the Chinese restaurant that we frequent. I also get the steamed rice rather than fried rice...and no noodles, of course. My son gets the sweet and sour chicken. He orders it with the chicken unbattered. No problems.

    Newbie - Another One

Personally, I don't worry about soaps, shampoos, etc. If you don't ingest it, you shouldn't have a problem. The gluten damages the villi in the intestines and how can it do that unless it gets into the intestines? Not gonna happen if it just gets on your skin. However, if you happen to have it, say, under your fingernails, then put it in your mouth, it...
  20. My nephew got married this past weekend. All of my bros. and my sister, and all but two of my mother's siblings attended. The wedding was in Longview, so my out-of-town relatives came here for a couple of days, then we all drove to Longview for a weekend of parties. My brother and his wife, parents of the groom, paid for our hotel rooms for the weekend...

    Back Again

I don't keep up with the race, so your zinger flew right past me. I don't know why so many people are resistant to being diagnosed. Maybe they think it is too awful to contemplate. And, yes, your son's doctor should not have told him he will never develop celiac disease. He should know that the tests frequently come back false negative. ...

    Back Again

celiac disease can cause depression, so your sons need to get tested right away. Some of my family members who also have celiac disease struggle with depression. In their cases it has nothing to do with being unable to cope with life. The way I heard about celiac disease for the very first time, before I knew it ran in my family, was from a very close...
  23. People with celiac disease can eat oats. I and every other person with celiac disease that I know eat oats regularly with no ill effects. Here are two articles from this site: "The article is based on a study conducted in Finland by a group of doctors who did very rigorous testing on adult celiacs and concluded that oats can, and should be included on...
