So...my husband and I have been thinking about buying some land and becoming self-sufficent. We've been looking at various properties since last fall and trying to decide what to do. We finally made an offer on an 80-acre property a few weeks ago. Our offer was rejected, so we thought, "Well, it just wasn't meant to be." But the owners of the property...
2. Ack! I have got to stop eating like a pig! My clothes are getting tight. I can't stand it. It doesn't help when everyone around me thinks I'm thin and smirk when I mention losing weight. I start thinking, "Well, maybe I'm not as fat as I think...yeah, in fact, I am lookin' gooood." Then I put my jeans on and try to button them. That's when...
3. Try switching to a gluten-free pasta - rice, corn, quinoa, etc. - without telling hubby. He might not even notice.

Undiagnosed,help

Fortunately, I was diagnosed before I had many problems. I wasn't even looking for any diagnosis. The only noticable symptom that I had was acid reflux and I thought it was normal, although it was slowly getting worse. I found out a relative had celiac disease, and I thought some of my other family members had symptoms. I knew it was genetic so I recommended...

BTW, that "chronic psoriasis" could be dermatitis herpetiformis. Tell the docs to put that in their pipe and smoke it.

Just insist that they test you. They are working for you and it's your decision. Doctors think that celiac disease is rare, but it's not. That's probably why they are resisting the test. Be aware, though, that false negatives are common. My mother tested negative with her blood test. Since she still was suffering with symptoms, her...

...brand New...

Well, if you're looking for someone to relate to, you came to the right place. Just want to make a few comments about your post. First of all, if your brother was diagnosed with celiac disease as an infant, then he still has it. It is common for the symptoms to go away in the teen years, but they will return. Your brother needs to be on...

Too Much Info!

I was diagnosed about three years ago...I think. It's hard to keep track of time. I didn't really have many symptoms and was just lucky to find out it ran in my family. The people in my family that we know of that have celiac disease for sure are: me, my two children, my mother, my oldest brother, my youngest sister, my mother's youngest brother...

Oh, I'm sorry about your dad. That must have been a shock for all of you. I asked because I was wondering if it was celiac related...obviously it was not. My father died suddenly, too, when I was 12 and he was 36. He was accidentally electrocuted.

Just curious...what did your father die from?

I meant just a cooking class in general. It wouldn't have to be a gluten-free class, just a class to learn how to cook. If you are only looking for things that say "wheat" or "gluten" on food labels, then you are missing a lot. You're probably still getting gluten in your diet. Look at the site below. It's a part of this site (celiac.com) and has lists...

Too Much Info!

Honestly, I do not cheat on the diet. I'm not even tempted to cheat and, frankly, it shocks me that anyone with celiac disease would, especially if they have bad reactions. But, I know that some do. I have a dear friend, an older man, who was diagnosed about 15 years ago. We (my family and friends) thought celiac disease was the freakiest think we ever...
13. My husband and I went to our first ever Republican Party dinner. It's not really my "thang", but we needed to go because my husband is considering running for Congress in 2008. We needed to do a "meet and greet". Anyway, we had specified ahead of time that I needed a gluten-free meal. The person my husband talked to on the phone told us that one gluten...
14. I have a roast thawing right now. Here's a soup that I make with left overs. It's super easy and very tasty. 1 large potato, peeled and cubed 1 can green beans 1 can corn 1 can Ro-tel (tomatos and chilis) 4 bullion cubes left over roast beef, cubed or shredded Cook potato in 4-5 cups water with bullion cubes. Pour all other ingredients into...

Healthy Me

Everyone got sick but me. My husband got sick and threw up all X-mas night. I was afraid it was something I cooked, but that couldn't have been it because no other family member or guest got sick. I had a little of everything and I didn't get sick. So then I was really worried that it was a virus and that I was going to get it. I hate throwing up worse...
16. Congratulations! I'm glad to hear it went well and that you were able to go and enjoy.
17. Hmmm, you and I have a lot in common. (1) Both of my children took voice lessons. My daughter, who is 23 now, sings at various venues around town. She loves to perform. (2) I play the piano. My parents really sacrificed to give all four of us children piano lessons. I had my daughter take lessons from a piano teacher. And when my son was old...
18. It's really awful that your family isn't supporting you in your endeavor to get healthy. Sadly, since celiac disease is genetic, some or all of your children are likely to have it. Some day, when they start having symptoms, if they don't already, they will understand what you've gone through. It's likely, though, that they will resist a celiac disease...

Tis The Season

...for parties, that is. We went to a party with our fellow church members last night. It's always a pot luck and usually not a whole lot of gluten-free foods to choose from. Most of them know about my celiac problem and some of them actually make an effort to bring gluten-free foods, which is very nice of them. One lovely lady made a point of telling...
20. I don't know if testing for B12 deficiency is included in a standard blood test or not. You may have to request it specifically. We didn't know to request it for my daughter, but because of her fatigue, our doctor thought of it.
21. I wasn't specifically recommending a B12 test. I was just using that personal experience as an example of possible symtoms of celiac disease and how it might affect our brains. If you are B12 deficient, you would be very tired/fatigued all the time. My daughter was sleeping constantly even though she was only 20 and wanted to be out doing things.
22. Yes, from what I've read on the message boards and blogs, gluten has and does impair brain function. I hear a lot of talk of anything from "brain fog" to seizures to schizophrenia to depression. My understanding is that gluten damages our intestines which causes malabsorption of vital nutrients. Naturally, that would cause a chemical imbalance, among other...

Knock On Wood

No need to be sorry. That's your opinion and you're certainly entitled to it. Since Emmitt won, apparently a lot of people thought the same thing. Technically, Mario is a much better dancer. In a real dance contest, Emmitt could not have won against Mario. Dancing With the Stars has that extra component of having the fan's vote count. That's what made the...

Knock On Wood

You know what the coolest thing about being on the gluten-free diet has been for me so far? Not getting sick. I've been gluten-free for nearly three years now and have not had any cold or flu at all. I might have mentioned this previously in my blog, but it still amazes me. I don't know if it's because I'm off gluten, or because my kids are older and...
