Diagnosis

Congratulations on your diagnosis. From what I've read, it takes an average of 10 years of going from doctor to doctor for most celiac sufferers to get a diagnosis. I was lucky in that regard. I didn't have any noticeable symptoms when I found out that my uncle had celiac disease. Since I already knew about the disease from a family friend, and...
2. No, there is no cure and don't let "Dr." Snow rip you off. Go on a gluten-free diet and feel better. There are legitimate researchers and doctors searching for treatments and cures, but none are found yet.
3. I struggle with my weight, too. In reality, I've always been on the slim side, but I don't think I see myself realistically and I see fat when I look in the mirror. I'm 46 and a size 6, but I know I've gained weight since being diagnosed about two and half years ago. People look at me like I'm crazy when I mention needing to lose weight, so I usually keep...
4. We had our Christmas dinner on Monday the 26th this year. I am certain that I didn't have anything to eat that contained gluten, but I was sick all Monday night. The only thing questionable that I consumed was a Sam's Choice (Walmart brand) root beer. The only questionable ingredients on it's label are caramel coloring and natural flavoring. I have a...

Hellllooooo!

Is anybody out there in blogland!? I had a good gluten-free Thanksgiving. No gluten contamination. Last year I got something, still haven't figured out what it was, but it ruined my trip to see Cirque du Soliel. Some of my family members brought some glutened foods, but I avoided them and all was A-OK. My sausage dressing was excellent this year...

Emotions

I'm so sorry you're having a bad time. Would you consider taking anti-depressants to get you through this period...maybe just until your system can recover somewhat or the dr.'s find out what's causing your fatigue? Where do you live? Maybe you could find a celiac support group. We have one in the Dallas area. I've only been to...
7. Well, with that attitude, I definitely wouldn't hire that woman to make my cake. What a creep. And what a crummy cook she must be if she can't even figure out how to make a gluten-free cake. It's not that hard. I have a chocolate cake recipe that I've used for years. My husband has always raved about it. I thought it was a thing of the past...

Home Again Today

I guess I'm kind of lucky in that regard. My oldest brother has celiac disease, too, so all of my family tries to make gluten-free food when we get together. Whenever we go visit my mother, she calls me constantly to ask "is this or that gluten free?". Actually, I'm pretty sure she has celiac disease, too, but she won't go on the...

What kind of creamed corn do you get? I love creamed corn, but can only find it with gluten in it. If you're craving wheat, you should try that Chebe bread. I ordered some off their internet site, the variety case, and have made two different kinds. They were both very good. I made hot dog buns which aren't really like regular buns, but still...

Thank you kindly.

Home Again Today

Well, yeah, it's a pain, but we always need to be thinking ahead as to where we're going to be and what will be available to eat.

What did you eat that had gluten in it?
13. Well, IMO, it only stands to reason that the depression would be caused by a chemical imbalance. That's what celiac disease does...prevents the body from absorbing the nutrients we need, which in turns causes chemical imbalances. Of course, not every celiac gets depressed, but it is certainly a reasonable expectation. I can't say that going gluten-free...
14. I just read all of your blog entries. Wow, you've had a hard life. I'm sorry for that. Hearing about your trials should made a lot of us stop whining about not being able to have a piece of bread. I just wanted to comment on your childhood depression. You probably already know this, but celiac disease can cause depression and suicidal thoughts. I mean...

Yeah, this site (celiac.com) has lists that you can purchase, too. I thought you wanted free stuff (like I do). Go here if you want to pay for mega lists: I carry a PDA with me everywhere. I put the "safe" and "forbidden" lists in it. I've pretty much memorized what I can't have, but it was very helpful in the beginning when I went grocery shopping...

Yeah, non-celiacs usually don't get it. If we say, "I can't eat the rolls because they have wheat in them." they say, "Well, how about a whole wheat roll then?" **sigh** Or, "Oh you can eat just this little bit, just this one time, it won't hurt you. " Don't let it get to you. Amanda's Mom keeps all kinds of gluten-free food lists on her...

Gluttened!

My daughter did that last year. I can't remember the name of the cookie, but it's like a chocolate graham and I like to make cheesecake crust out of it. My daughter decided she wanted some just to eat, so she went to Whole Foods and bought some. She ate the whole bag (over a period of days) and exclaimed about how good they were. Turns out she had bought...

Thanks. I found it and read it.
21. I assume Chester is your husband? See, he is concerned about your gluten intake. He cleaned the toaster...fanatically! Chester is the name of my uncle (mother's youngest brother) who was the first one diagnosed with celiac disease in our family. I'm glad to hear that all went well for you and everyone ate happily. Oh, one more thing. I just...
22. Lindy, how did your weekend full of gluten-eating guests go?

Hmm..

Num1, sounds like you are having a tough time. Why is your father so angry? Are you sticking with the diet? Are you a teenager? There are a couple of other teens on this board. I have a 16 y.o. son with celiac disease and I think it's hardest for him to stay on the diet because all of his friends are always eating pizza and stuff.

Cereal

Atkins's power bars are gluten-free? I've been looking for some gluten-free power bars, but haven't been able to find any, so I'll be sure to look for Atkins next time. Thanks for the tip.

Gluten Reactions

I'll probably never paint another patio. Crawling around on my knees for hours is not exactly a pleasant experience...especially in the TX heat. I imagine the heat is even worse in AZ!
