  1. Total IGA doesn’t have “ negative” as a possibility - it is normal, low or high and does not test for Celiac. Sounds like they didn’t actually test you for Celiac. https://celiac.org/about-celiac-disease/screening-and-diagnosis/screening/
  2. Had to google “ Sara Lee gluten-free”. They make cold cuts! Those should all be gluten-free & it looks like they say they are.
  3. But it will list barley malt as an ingredient. ( I know you know that but maybe a newbie won’t. The only cheese I have seen with gluten are the ones that are made with beer. Not sure if Sara Lee makes gluten-free products? If they do- they will likely proudly proclaim it on The packaging and charge 40% more for it than their regular pastry. ...
  4. I am sorry that your doctor was not able to impress upon you the importance of a gluten free diet. There is a lot of research going on about Celiac disease and possible cures or treatments. The Univ of Chicago (site linked below) is one that has been active for many years. There are many others. Perhaps you would find it helpful to read a bit so...
  5. It can take months, even a year or more, to completely heal. But, you can start to feel better in a few days to a few weeks, if you see strictly gluten-free. That means no gluten at all! Small amounts will continue the damage/ antibody production. it is possible that some of your issues are caused by something else. You might want to cut out...
  6. If we are basing this on our experience only- I have had it many times and can say that I did not react - therefore it is gluten free.
  7. Corn does not contain gluten. But it can be hard to digest. how do you know you have DH not some other rash? It’s rare to suddenly get Dh from one episode of gluten - unless you had it before. DH is a very specific “rash” and is diagnosed by a biopsy taken next to a fresh lesion.
  8. If you have a wheat allergy - you need to stay away from all wheat- not just the obvious bread, pasta & cookies. Wheat is used in sauces and soy sauce. You get some with your fries if they fry flour battered chicken or onion rings in the same oil. For someone with Celiac, one exposure usually won’t kill us. For an allergy, one exposure can k...
  9. There isn’t really a “ gluten allergy”. Some people call Celiac a “ gluten allergy”. It isn’t actually an allergy but that seems like the easiest way for people to understand. A wheat allergy is a totally different thing. I am not an expert on allergies but I would think that if you are allergic to wheat - you shouldn’t eat any part of wheat. ...
  10. Well... of course! You have to make 3 extra and immediately set them aside when they come out of the oven! ? Canned baked beans/ pork and beans taste great on a baked potato or fries. Just to change up what you know how to make. do you have someone that could fix a few things for you? Like maybe cook some chicken you could add to your pasta...
  11. baking scrambled eggs is like quiche. You can add a little milk/cream to it if you want ( maybe just a small spoonful for a couple of eggs). I like to add frozen shredded or small square potatoes in it, too. have you every kept a few of your oven French fries and added them to your scrambled eggs? YUM! Just cut in bite sized pieces and throw in the...
  12. And another thought- when you see the dietician - ask if she knows any simple cooking classes you could take.
  13. I would say not to waste your time trying to make omelets. A pretty one requires the perfect pan and some skill. But you can get the same flavors by scrambling the eggs and adding the cheese or veggies to them. If you have a muffin pan, you can scramble (mix well) some eggs in a bowl , pour in the greased muffin tins, then add some stuff like cheese or...
  14. Yes that means you probably shouldn’t eat that brand. There are other brands that don’t say that. You will find that people/ companies often say “ wheat allergy” when referring to Celiac & actual wheat allergy.
  15. Do you live there too?
  16. Is that your kitchen? its lovely! Is it in the middle of a bigger building? I can never figure out how to post a picture at all!
  17. Does your wife bake with gluten? sometimes people use the same measuring cups from flour to sugar.
  18. Monitoring if a treatment works is part of "the treatment". If you break your leg, part of "treating" the leg is repeat xrays (to see how its doing in the cast). By the logic that this one "guest" keeps repeating, then a followup xray to decide to take off the cast is not part of the treatment? Seems a silly thing to quibble about if there is an...
  19. In the unlikely event that someone actually used malt vinegar to clean this oven - it isn’t going to be blowing around. It would be more of a concern if it had flour in it. They could certainly clean it, then let it cook and blow for a while if that makes them feel better.
  20. First- by making it easier and less invasive to test for Celiac or diabetes- it will lead to more diagnoses of Celiac - that can then be treated. And It sounds like they could use it to help check compliance and healing of Celiac. It doesn’t say it replaces a gluten-free diet or insulin in a diabetic.
  21. They cleaned with malt vinegar? That’s the only one with gluten and it’s barley. Wash it again!
  22. Think about this - if There is something magical about Europe that makes gluten safe for Celiacs- why would they still sell so much gluten-free stuff at the groceries? Why have gluten-free bakeries? Why have such good laws about gluten-free food and labeling? what I have found is that a lot of these people probably don’t actually have Celiac. There a...
  23. No. Gluten is gluten. Please don’t make your daughter sick on vacation. Public restrooms are not as easy to find in other countries. Often they are pay toilets, too. Could get pricey if you gluten your child. ?
  24. This is from The Gluten Free Watchdog- Urgent alert: Ramela Heartland Pearl Barley. Based on information provided to Gluten Free Watchdog by a consumer & confirmed to GFWD by a chain grocery store, at least some product packaging carries a gluten-free claim. The local store has removed all product from the shelf. The consumer has reported the product...
  25. You might check and see if there is a DC area Celiac or gluten free Facebook group.
