Gluten ataxia: Wondering if I have it?
kareng replied to lrlazarov's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Have you been to a doctor about this? This seems serious and may have nothing to do with gluten. Don’t mention gluten, just tell the doctors what is happening -
The blood tests are looking for antibodies not the prescence of gluten in your blood. When a Celiac eats gluten, antibodies are made in the small intestine. These antibodies start attacking the small intestine instead of the gluten invader. When you make enough antibodies, they start showing in the blood stream and that is what gives you a positive blood...

Sign up for "find me gluten free" and review the place. Many Celiacs use that to find out about restauruants.

Have you been tested by a medical doctor for Celiac? You might want to do that before going gluten-free.

Hot Dogs That Are Gluten Free
kareng replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If they say gluten-free and have no gluten ingredients? I would say they are gluten-free. If they say gluten-free but you can’t read the ingredients at the baseball game? They most likely are gluten-free. In the US, it is very very rare for a hot dog to contain gluten. Now how they are prepared may be a problem. -
Is Reese mint jelly gluten free?

Pectin is gluten-free. It’s dried to a powder goo from fruit . Lol -
Why not ask the doctor? I have tried to explain it, but you might accept it better if the doctor explained it to you? And please, have the doctor explain it to your daughter. She is the one that has to deal with this for the rest of her life. I wish her luck. If she would like to make an account, I am sure we would be happy to help her with her Celiac...

Trouble Coping with Celiac and Eating gluten-free
kareng replied to xopinkpetals's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You can't be diagnosed with Celiac just through genetic tests. About 30% of people have at least one gene that could lead them to develop Celiac. But only about 1% of people actually develop Celiac. https://www.cureceliacdisease.org/faq/if-i-have-a-gene-for-celiac-disease-does-that-i-mean-i-have-it/ "Genetics don’t diagnose celiac disease. ... -
Its diagnosed by the regular complete blood count panel most doctors do for routine exams. The big clue is when your red blood cells are large and misformed. This shows on the MVC part of the blood panel. Then they see the level of B12 in your blood is very low and sometimes do a special count to look a little more closely at the red blood cells. Thats...

The anemia doesn't effect the villi. It is the damaged villa that cause the anemia. the villi are how you absorb the iron, ferritin, B12, etc. If you can't absorb the iron, B12, etc....you get anemia. The anemia caused from the difficulty absorbing B12 is called pernicious anemia. In Celiac, sometimes you never get the ability to absorb the B12 back...

Trouble Coping with Celiac and Eating gluten-free
kareng replied to xopinkpetals's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have a shared household. But my kids and husband are willing to be extra careful, follow procedures to keep their gluten from hurting me, and, in the beginning, they didn’t flaunt food in front of me that I missed. So, it is possible to have a shared household..... but only if the gluten eaters are willing to be more than cateful. -
Becoming tolerant to wheat, but not barley, rye
kareng replied to bridgetm's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Celiac disease is an immune response. Gluten intolerance is not. You could be reacting to things like FODMAPS , something else, or not even really reacting. An allergy is not just a bit of a stomach disturbance. as a Celiac, I can't imagine how a person would have " no choice" but to eat gluten. This is a great example of why people should be diagnosed... -
I think you are jumping way ahead of yourself. Last I read, You haven't figured out how to get a Celiac blood test for the ones with Celiac symptoms. Why not take those kids to a doctor and do the blood test? Depending on how high the blood antibodies are, and the symptoms, that might help the doctor to decide if the kid needs further testing.

Diana J Wise
kareng replied to Diana J Wise's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Celiacs don't need to worry about corn. The type of gluten we need to worry about is from wheat, rye and barley. "gluten" is just a term for the protein in grains. Usually, in relation to food, it is used to mean the protein in wheat, rye and barley. -
That is swallowing flour and that happens. The original topic was about breathing in steam or odors that do not actually have gluten pieces floating in them.

If the rice is cooked with soy sauce or some other sauce that has gluten, it is not gluten-free. I wish places would not do that shared fryer is gluten-free nonsense. You just have to ask every time. If you haven't been here for a few years, you will notice that the gluten-free dining scene is getting better and more wide spread. IF you...

Thoughts on my first few weeks gluten free
kareng replied to Bananasbananas's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you have waited a whole year to go gluten-free - being diagnosed last May- it is going to take longer than a month to feel better. You spent a whole year knowingly hurting yourself. -
You need to I eat a couple of crackers worth of gluten a day until the endoscopy. I don't think 8 days gluten-free will be a problem. It really depends on how " high" your blood work is. Usually they like to do an endoscopy and a colonoscopy, just to make sure there are no other issues and see how bad the damage is.

Other than yucky Pizza Hut wings, I don't think we even have anyplace that make wings that delivers - gluten or gluten-free. Is all you eat "delivery" and fast food? Not healthy for anyone.
