ARCHIVED Hamburger Helper Mix? Gluten free?
kareng replied to KaylaB's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
When I was a kid, my mom didn’t want to pay extra for the cheeseburger hamburger helper. She just made her own with Kraft max and cheese. You could just make your own with a gluten-free Mac and cheese. Not cheap, but would work great. -
ARCHIVED Hamburger Helper Mix? Gluten free?
kareng replied to KaylaB's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Probably has some flour for thickener. But the ingredients will say something like - macaroni ( wheat, cuz) then cheese powder , onion, ..... what flavor or do you like? There are some gluten-free versions or maybe we could help you make up some mix to use -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Severe Fecal Fat Malabsorption- pancreas issues or celiac?
kareng replied to Lisa M M's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You are worried that you might have cancer? Get to a doctor! Get legitimate medical testing and care! I wouldn’t try to self treat cancer if I thought I might have that. -

ARCHIVED Has anyone used Nima to test honey for gluten, by any chance?
kareng replied to Lex-'s topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If you want to have this discussion, please make your own topic. Political/ conspiracy theories, roundup, your theories on the cause of Celiac do not belong on this lady’s question about honey -

A Celiac should be on the look out for barley or barley malt, too. -
ARCHIVED Has anyone used Nima to test honey for gluten, by any chance?
kareng replied to Lex-'s topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
What is wheat dust in a farm setting? Dried stems? How would fully formed seed get into honey? Bees don't take seeds in. Seeds don't " float" into bee hives. Please share your legitimate sources for this warning as I have not seen any? -
Refried Beans
kareng replied to Wakeboarder's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yep! exactly! i probably have eaten them. I usually buy a different brand that doesn't have much More than beans and spices as ingredients - my preference. -

ARCHIVED BF Not Sick From Eating Gluten?!?!?!
kareng replied to garycat88's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't know how he was diagnosed, so I am just going to comment for people who are legitimately diagnosed. for some people, they heal well. It can take a while for the body to make the antibodies needed to cause damage. Then it may take a while for the damage to get intense enough for the person to recognize it. Also, there are lots of things that... -
ARCHIVED Question for those avoiding dairy (casein)?
kareng replied to Jmg's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I am wondering if, once you get yourself sorted out, you might not need to worry so much about a dark chocolate that has a "may contain" allergy statement. A lot of times, those are just because they have dairy around. Probably none in the chocolate. And if we aren't talking allergy, maybe a speck of dairy once in a while won't make a difference. And...- 41 replies

I guess you could develop new symptoms like DH , even if you never had it before...... But.... Anyone coming back from a tropical place with a bit of an itchy rash in one small place makes me think of bugs or brushing against a plant or something like that.

ARCHIVED Steak 'n Shake Milkshakes
kareng replied to NikolasJackson's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I don't think the manager knows what he is talking about or doesn't want to mess with " allergy" requests. Which ever I think is, you don't want to eat there. I know people with Celiac that eat at a local Steak and Shake - burgers without buns, fries and shakes. So I think it just depends on how lazy the manager is? -
ARCHIVED Post-diagnosis depression
kareng replied to mewnicorns's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Celiacs need to avoid more than wheat. We need to avoid rye- that's pretty easy as it isn't in much and usually combined with wheat. Barley/ barley malt is another thing we need to avoid. That is in a few things. Oats must be labeled gluten-free or else they are presumed to contain some accidental wheat. -
Let me remind you that you are posting on a Celiac website. Celiacs CAN NOT DRINK regular beer. And there is NO CURE for Celiac currently!

ARCHIVED Testing after Gluten exposure
kareng replied to celichris's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Unless its prolonged - like 12 weeks, it probably wouldn't show in a Celiac person's blood test. Maybe your doctor is trying to convince you you don't have Celiac buy showing you negative tests? Actually- how does your doctor even know you were "glutened"? I don't all my doctor up if it happens. She can't do anything about it -
ARCHIVED Post-diagnosis depression
kareng replied to mewnicorns's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
On the restaurants - I live in Kansas city. It isn't as big as a New York or Seattle. But we have some very safe places to eat. Yes, they have the disclaimer.... but they are very careful. There are some chains that do gluten-free right. Most higher end places are very careful with food. The problem might be bar food.... but even that is possible.... -
ARCHIVED Post-diagnosis depression
kareng replied to mewnicorns's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
On the work lunches - you may find people a bit jealous of the lovely grilled chicken taco salad or left over steak salad you bring for lunch. Your homemade chili will smell so good coming out of the company microwave. I have found people often wish they were eating my left overs over the junk they got. And you may not have noticed before, because you... -

If you live in a big city, you will find lots of places to eat out. breakfast foods like omlettes are usually gluten-free. You might have to skip the toast. You can find sauces, etc that are gluten-free. Most all pasta sauces, for example. For Asian cooking , San J makes life lots of nice gluten-free sauces. Salsa and many canned enchilada sauces... -
ARCHIVED Celiac, Colitis and chronic UTI's
kareng replied to Jeanne E. Schneider's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Sure. UTIs are caused by bacteria. Diarrhea causes a lot of bacteria to get smeared around and it can get into your urinary track. (I am assuming you are female) Open Original Shared Link -

You may find some things ypu didn't associate with Celiac go away - migraines, nerve problems, cold sores, thyroid issues, etc. As for the watching people eat - you might be able to get them to go to a Celiac safe place. You may just have to plan your food life better. Cook ahead, keep a package of nuts or protein bar with you always. Sometimes... -
ARCHIVED celiac?
kareng replied to RebeccaR's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree with the others. Just because your test wasn't negative 15 years ago, means nothing today! It would be like going in with a terrible sore throat and the doctor saying it can't be strep throat because 15 years ago the test was negative. -
ARCHIVED Firefly brand Sweet tea vodka

I would ask the company. It isn't as important what it is distilled from as what is added in after to give it the flavor
