  1. Dr. Newton is affiliated with the Wm. K. Warren Medical Research Center for Celiac Disease. The mission of the Center is to Advance the knowledge of celiac disease pathogenesis and to develop novel diagnostic and therapeutic advances, Increase the medical and local community's knowledge about celiac disease, and Provide expert clinical care...
  2. Regular frozen veggies should all be quite safe. It's when you buy a mix (rice with peas and a flavor) that you run into a possible problem. Read the ingredient list. To be very safe buy a bag of any frozen veggie that has only that one ingredient - peas (or corn or whatever veggie it is)
  3. Since moving to Central Oregon we eat out more than in the past, mainly because we have to drive 30 minutes to get to the next "big" town and like to indulge in a lunch out. That said, we have found more and more places that offer a separate gluten free menu which makes it so much easier. Even when ordering off of the g.f. menu I always state "I am ordering...
  4. This is something learned with experience. You may want to go with a simple coffee that offer less chance for cross contamination. Starbucks offers so many different drinks and do not "celiac" wash the equipment.
  5. I always say "allergy" as the establishment will take extra precautions. A lot of people eat g.f. by choice or have gluten intolerance and maybe don't have to be as careful . It's just easier to say "allergy".
  6. Again it is so different with everyone on reaction time. The first couple of years for me I swear I could feel it hit my gut almost immediately, now it takes a few hours.
  7. Everyone reacts slightly differently. Everything you describe sounds quite normal for a glutened reaction. For myself, I feel slightly sick to my stomach, then I get diarrhea, followed by cold, clammy sweaty chills, then comes the vomiting and think I am going to die followed by passing out followed by several days of constipation. This is followed by renewed...
  8. Oh my!!! Don't think I will risk voicing my concerns about all of the unhealthy ingredients that were consumed and that could have caused the problems or that we shouldn't blame the slightest thing on cross contamination. Nope. Keeping my mouth shut here.
  9. All of the above is why I really push for eating whole fresh foods. Nothing processed. There should be no ingregient list to read. Healing is hard enough without subjecting our bodies to other ingredients that don't belong in our food. Heal first then try adding a food product. Just my little food rant for the day!
  10. Barilla is safe and most likely it was was of the other ingredients in it that bothered you. Possibly even the brand of pasta you used. Corn based pasta can be difficult to digest. Just a thought.
  11. Please, please stay away from processed foods. The added ingredients in those food products will only help to slow down your return to health. Bone broth, as mentioned, is very high in the nutrients you need and healing to the gut. For a little added flavor you can throw in some carrots & celery tops while it simmers away. Sip on that throughout the...
  12. I like the picture suggestion! Like, why didn't I ever think about that!!! We just moved to a new state which means new health insurance so I will prob start this over again - this time with pics.
  13. It is a long time. But the frustrating part is that it is not constant but rather outbreaks. So.. I go to my primary dr and ask for a referral to the derm. By the time the referral comes through and I finally get the derm apt my lips are cleared up. The derm looks at me like I'm crazy. I try to explain and ask if I can call the next time I get an outbreak...
  14. I do not fly out of country so can't comment on that, however I do carry a letter from my doctor stating that I am Celiac and need to carry my own food etc. I have had to use it twice when my food amount was questioned.
  15. This posting really blew me away! My lips get very red and inflamed to the point where I look like one of those little kids that constantly licks their lips. They peel, heal and then we start the cycle all over again. Very embarrassing. This started about a year before I was diagnosed. I have been gluten free for five years now and still struggle with...
  16. A toothbrush glutening makes sense since various medical type articles I have read recommend that you switch to a new brush if you have been sick.
  17. I have shared (my partner is now gluten free having just been diagnosed gluten intolerant!) with no problem. Also we just use crest.
  18. Kraft is very good about calling out allergens. That said you may want to look at the list of ingredients that are in the product. Any one of those, or all, are probably not healthy and your body may quite possibly be reacting to that!
  19. Eight months is not that long and depending on your age I wouldn't consider that long enough for a complete gut healing. Children heal quickly. The older you are and the sicker you were, the longer the healing process. Two years is not uncommon. Before you can consider refractory you need to consider everything - age, how sick where you, is your home...
  20. I will still say wheat is wheat is wheat. If you are celiac then you are playing with fire to eat it. Period. You may not get sick but the damage is being done anyway. Three days, three weeks, whatever, of carefree eating wheat simply does not seem worth the risk of what I may be doing internally. But we all are free to make our own choices. If I ever...
  21. Wine is gluten free. Wine spritzer drinks may not be.
  22. We travel a lot and during the summer and my partner and sister are always stopping for an ice cream. Sort of a bummer to not have the scooped stuff. Once in a great while you may find a place that will get a fresh carton, open it for you and super carefully wash the scooper but that's pretty rare and I usually hate to ask. I'll have a soft serve iuf they...
  23. Interestingly my partner, who is not celiac, can not handle brown or black rice or quinoa while I, the celiac, can handle it all. We do pretty much stay away from any rice (or other grain) as we eat mostly all paleo.
  24. I agree with other comments that rice can be difficult to digest especially in the newly and still healing celiac. You may want to wait a few months and then try again. Also you might want to consider an organic rice. Rice crops are heavily sprayed with a variety of pesticides which can add to tummy problems. Lundberg has a nice organic rice, they are...
  25. We have friends who tested negative for celiac (and we all know about the reliability of tests!) but because it runs in the family and they were not feeling well decided to go g.f. They are far more carefree about it than I would be as they are the ones who pick the bun off etc. Personally, if you get sick run from the stuff. Never cheat, never scrape...
