I think to receive communion is a personal choice. I still partcipate in communion, having faith that God will protect me. The gluten content in our communion wafers are low-gluten level and I've never experience a problem and I react severly to exposure. But, that's just me. . .
It's a difficult decision; it's not something that's black and white.
Regardless of whether or not you receive communion, I firmly believe that God recognizes your effort to honor Him.

I recently did a search on gluten-free restuarants near Nashville and I came up with Matteo's Pizza. They have a dedicated room for all the gluten-free pizzas and such.
I was wondering if anyone's ever been there and what you think of it. My 18th birthday is September 30th and I really want to go to this place to celebrate!

A good thing to send your child off to school with is a pair of child-size vinvyl gloves. A lot of teachers will push off 'oh no, it's a little---it won't hurt you.' Of course, it won't protect your child from hauling off and eating the art supplies, but, it will protect their little hands from breaking out.

It varies from person to person.
For me, it's never went away---and I've been strictly gluten-free for 3 years
My right side painfully sticks out and I just don't know why. My GI isn't too worried about it. Oh well.
Just give your daughter's small intestines time to heal. The better she adheres to the diet, the better her stomach will be. Most people see the distended belly vanish.
Hope your daughter feels better

Hello, I'm Ashley. I live in TN. My Dx age was 14, my current age is 17. I'll be eighteen in a few months.
-What were you thinking when you were diagnosed?
I was sort of blank. I knew it was coming, but, I really didn't want to believe it.
-How did you react when you heard?
Calmly. I just told my doctor 'okay, and thank you.'
-How did you family react? What were some of their responses?
My mother was relieved. Before I was Dxed, I was losing a ton a weight. After 4 months, I lost 70 pounds and was dealing with severe malnutrition.
-How do you handle dating being a Celiac?
I'm upfront. I won't kiss a guy after he's ate gluten and it wouldn't change for any guy. As far as going out, I sadly eat before I go 'out to eat'. Or, I'll just say I'm not hungry in certain situations. However, I cannot handle going to pizza places and I won't.
But, I've never really had a problem with it interfering with dates. Everyone around me knows that I have Celiac and very supportive.
-How did you come to realize that having celiac disease was not the end of the world?
After seeing kids at Vanderbilt's childern hosptial with no limbs or cancer.
-Tell me a time that you cheated, if you had, or a time where you wanted to.
It was about 6 months after my Dx. I had never cheated before and therefore never knew the side effects that I would have after eating gluten. Well, I slipped and ate a slice of pizza. Two hours later I was doubled over a toilet. I should have went to the ER to get my stomach pumped, but, I didn't. I didn't sleep for three days. Needless to say, I will never cheat again.

I was shopping at Walmart the other and I went down the cereal aisle, expecting to get my usual box of Fruity Pebbles when I ran into these!
It's my Friends Tigger & Pooh cereal, a show little kid show on Disney. The cereal is produced by General Mills. I got to reading and it looks gluten-free to me. Here's the ingredients:
Whole grain corn, corn meal, sugar, modified corn starch, corn syrup, canola and/or rice brain oil, salt, tricalcium phosphate, trisodium phosphate, yellow 6. Vitamin 5 (mixed tocopherols) added to perserve freshness.
I just wanted to double-check. It seems almost too good to be true They taste like Captain Crunch only a little bit softer.

Thanks everyone---I've got a lot baking to do

Has anyone found a decent substitute for poptarts? I've looked everywhere but yet to find any gluten-free version.

Ha! These were great, they made me laugh
My personal Celiac moment:
You know if you're a Celiac if you scream infrustration of seeing 'GUILT-FREE' on food boxes and mistaking it as 'gluten-free'.
I don't like whoever coined that phrase.

There we go! Problem fixed. The silly thing posted itself while I was mid-typing!

Ingredients
8 string cheese sticks
1/2 cup all-purpose flour [i use Bob's Red Mills.]
1/2 cup cornstarch
2 large egg whites
2 tablespoons water
1 1/2 cups bread crumbs [i use Wild Oat's gluten-free bakehouse brand.]
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon oregano
1. Get three bowls.
In the 1st bowl: combine gluten-free flour and cornstarch, blend together.
In the 2nd bowl: Beat egg whites with water until well mixed.
In the 3rd bowl: combine gluten-free bread crumbs, oregano, and salt.
***Tip: Finely crush the bread crumbs by putting them in a zip-lock bag and hitting it with a rolling pin. The fine crumbs, the better the mozzarella sticks.
2. Coat cheese sticks in the flour mix [1st bowl.]
Then, roll the stick in the egg white/water mix [2nd bowl.]
After that, roll the stick in the bread crumb mix [3rd bowl.]
For even coating, roll the stick again in the egg white/water mix [2nd bowl.]
Finally, roll the stick one last time in the the bread crumb mix [3rd bowl.]
3. Let freeze for at least an hour.
4. Fry 'em up in a skillet. Serve with marinana sauce and you're done!
These turned out so good! They're definitely a teenage favorite and it was nice to have them. Hope this helps someone =]

I was thrilled when I received my laptop as a gift for school. It was all great until my 3-month subscription for Norton ran out. I didn't feel comfortable with renewing over a wire connection because of Id theft. Then it popped into my head that I could just install my McAfee that I had on my PC that uses 2000. But I completely forgot that it was Vista and now I cannot get the stupid program off.
I've tried shredding it, but it pops up 'An error has occured'.
I've tried uninstalling it, but it says 'INF file missing'.
I went and bought Norton Internet Security for it and it doesn't recommend me downloading it because the McAfee could interfer with it.
So, I don't have a virus scanner and a $70 anti-virus program sitting on my table unused. My senior is coming up and I know I'm going to have my laptop for all those papers.
Does anyone might have a clue on what to do?

Hi!
I work at Maggie Moos, an ice cream shop. I absolutely love my job and my employers! They have been so nice and patient with me, especially with recurring sicknesses [from a freak allergic reaction from an unknown source to calling out sick for two weeks because constant pain on the right side of my stomach, originally thought to be gallbladder failure, but I guess it just extreme Celiac pain...anyway...]
Lately, I've been feeling the side effects of working in an environment laced with gluten. I constantly wash my hands, at least 20 times in an hour. But, the smell of the waffle cones cooking make feel horrible. I've recently began to develop migranes at work. I've become very frustrated and impatient, which is unusual. I went into work yesterday just dreading it---I didn't want to be there, I was so depressed.
I talked to my boss, and she doesn't want me to quit. By the end of the month, I will be fully trained and promoted to a shift manager. They've done so much for me, entrusting me with a lot of things. I'm so blessed to be 17 and making $7.00 an hour. She said they wanted to work with me, where the gluten exposure was cut down to a minimum.
There's an internal conflict within myself, because there are times I want to quit because I become so miserable physically and suffer depression from it, causing me to lose sleep at night. And then, I don't want to quit because I've worked there since we opened last spring break. I know everyone there and I'm comfortable around everyone.

Hi there Meline---
I try not to be so negative, I just have my bad days. I think its just I take more on than what I should lol
I do work out and I have notice that it does help my stomach, but not much on extended part. I'm trying to be persistent with it. I try to go at 3-4 times a week to the gym.
Just talking to me would be great. I apperciate the concern =]

Wish I could eat three non-gluten brownies. If I did, I'd be in the ER
Anyway, that is a major sign for me when I get glutened. I cannot sleep at all.
Take care---and make sure you don't gluten yourself anymore I know its hard but you're harming yourself for an emotional need. I always try to find something super good at the store and hide it for when I get a strong craving for gluten.

This past 6 months have been rough. I've had Celiac for 3 years now and I thought I was a veteran. Guess not. I had gotten into a rough patch and got very sick and missed over two weeks of school.
My GI ran blood work. Everything came back negative but my blood levels were twice as high from last year; going from my all time best to my all time worse.
I believe that I've taken care of hidden gluten source but it takes me quite a while to get over the sickness, I react severly.
Sometimes I feel alone. Its so hard at times because I work, I'm trying to keep up with all of my AP classes and I'm so physically exhausted.
And this stupid stomach of mine. I cannot get rid of my extended stomach! My right side pushes out way rather than the left and it just crashes my self-esteem. My stomach is so out of proportion to the rest of my body. If I could just fix my stomach I would feel overweight, even though I know I'm not.

Hi all- I'm going a synthesis paper [document-based] for AP English on Celiac Disease. I need at least three sources but I'm having trouble having ones that have all the information to were I can cite it.
I'm looking for a any kind of graph or chart that deals with anything Celiac.
If anyone could guide me in the path, that'd be great.

I've had a reaction and the only thing different I've consumed is my birth control. I just started monday, but I forgot two days because I spent the night with a friend. I took three pills of Alesse [generic version of Lessina.] on Wedneday to make up for it. I woke up with my caperillies broken.
Is this gluten-free or no?

Thanks everyone---all your posts make me smile
So here's the deal with that:
When we were in DC, one of the chaperones, who was my room leader, called the DC police and they said it was out of their power, because it was school function and according to TN, it's considered school property if you're on a trip. So we didn't file anything until we got home. We filed a police report against him, but, after a couple of days they said it was DC's responsibilty because it happened there. So, someone's wrong. My parents had the full intent of pressing charges. I've got to mail my statement to the DC police department. I'm not sure if anything's going to happen or not. My parents are going to see what the vocational principal and the school board is going to do. The vocational principal, who use to be a colonel in the army, isn't happy at all.
Horsegirl- I'm 17, so I'll let my mom know about going to Child Protective Services.
Thanks for the support. I'm not really bothered by it 'cause I'm home and out of the man's harm. I'm just highly disappointed by my two ROTC instructors.

Hi guys! I've been gone for a little bit, but, I'm back again.
Thanks to everyone who wished me a happy birthday on the Sept 30 topic <3
I went to Washington DC for my 2nd time with my ROTC unit on my birthday. As far as Celiac goes, I did an excellent job this year with keeping myself healthy and having food to eat. Which was a great improvement from last year lol.
But, I just feel like I lost a big part of myself. I was assualted by one of the chaperones on the trip. I'm perfectly fine but I'm hurt emotionally. My Sergeant and Major did absolutely nothing about it. When my mom tried to call my Major about it, she got his voicemail. I told him that my mom needed to talk to him. "Well, I'm too busy and I'm not calling anyone tonight. I've got to many things to do." It's like, hi, is my safety not important to you? I couldn't believe it. I've seen them everyday for all of the 3 years I've been in highschool. They didn't even ask me if I was hurt or scared. There was a whole lot that went on that trip and I gave the vocational principal a hand-written 3 page report over it. I don't know if I can handle staying in ROTC, because I know they're going to treat me different. And I sure don't want to stay there if they're going to support the chaperone over me.
I don't know what to do. I'm sick my stomach about it. I'm still out on fall break until Monday. I really don't want to go back to school, either. I though I'd come to the old board and listen to some great advice =]
Thanks guys,
Ash.

I guess maybe I'm the odd one out, but, is it difficult for anyone else to read with the new layout? I actually do like it. But, I have to strain to concentrate on what I'm read with these colors.

It makes me furious that vegans are catered to but not Celiacs. I was in JROTC for three years than quit because I knew there was no way I was getting into the Air Force.
Well, thanks for the info, Debmidge. It's interesting to keep up with.
